exhaust install

Hi guys my exhaust should be here tomorrow or friday and was looking to have it installed this saturday. I called a few places and got quoted 200.00 and 277.00 do these sound high?

tjlazer 12-08-2010 05:33 PM

Sounds about right. DIY and save a few hundred bucks! ;)

dont you need race ramps to get your car up? i dont have any

Kastley85891 12-08-2010 10:53 PM

Dude, if I was in ATX and not China now I would say drive up and Id do it for you, do not pay $$ to get this installed, maybe a member in H will do it for you for the price of a Starbucks and a Subway.

Keep your $$ for mods

Get the car up on jack stands, you don't need ramps. Jack it up and place jackstands underneath it.

Take a trip to San Antonio and I'll put it on for nothing. Congrats on a great exhaust.

Well thanks for the offer bro but I am probably going to go have it installed just because i can drop it off and have it done when i get off work or whatever but i must say if you are in Houston at some point, beer on me for your generous offer.

Yes I vote for a DIY, I installed mine with test pipes in a few hours.

did you have help or was it a 1 man job?
Man yall are really tempting me to do it myself

pg6speed 12-09-2010 06:32 PM

DIY on a catback is very straight forward and only requires a jack, stands, and basic hand tools. I installed my catback in a little over an hour, the headers were another story. No need to spend $150-$200 for this install unless you have more cash than time.

I did have help/ and a Lift, I went to a co-workers house who has a work shop with a lift :) But yes it is an easy DIY if you are only doing exhaust.. I have done it on jack stands before on other cars of mine.

You should have bought it back in Sept. I was in San Antonio for a couple weeks on Vacation, I would have helped you :)

other than the possible washer to even out the exhaust does anyone know of any prep work needed for these or additional materials that could help for a quicker and easier install? thanks guys.

pg6speed 12-09-2010 07:36 PM

My F.I. install went very smooth. I did it on jack stands and had another set of hands help me hold and position things. No washers needed here, very good fit out of the box.

All I used was stands in the back.

murphman 12-10-2010 08:43 AM

Thanks for all the help and answering of questions since this is my first car i will be moding and the first mod i will have done but i have one more question. Will the use of anti seize be recommended in this project?

pg6speed 12-10-2010 08:57 AM

A bit of anti-sieze wont hurt anything and it will make it easier to remove later if you should need to. Be sure to install everything loosely at first and then start tightening things from the front of the car to the back. Have someone holding each peice in position as you're tightening and working your way back. Take your time and do it right, its not a race.

Ask as many questions as you need there are plenty of people that can help.

murphman 12-10-2010 07:25 PM

Hey Pg6speed, i just got done looking under the car to figure the best place to use the stands. Did you use that large roundish metal piece under the springs? Also how high do you need to jack it up i went like 10-12 inches just to look under and was like dayumn i got a long way to go to make this high enough to work under.

I would just get some Rhino Ramps from Autozone and jack it up on those. Easy and cheap. You can get a nice low profile race ramp for like $80 or so (FreighHarbor)

Kastley85891 12-10-2010 08:01 PM

I usually drive the front up on autozone ramps, jack of the rear diff and stick the stands on the rear sills, plenty of room, stick some rubber flooring down or card board to save your back when shuffling around underneath.. ;-)

murphman 12-10-2010 08:50 PM

wow i was not thinking, i got a pair of ramps but are to steap to drive up but i sure can lift then set the rear up onto them.

Kastley85891 12-10-2010 08:55 PM

^ you mean the front of your baby scuffs out, just use some pre lifts like some wood, drive the fronts up on that then slide the ramps in to the tire and load her up, you an always reverse on to your ramps and jack the front if not.

yeah i actually went out there and realized ther was like a 1-2 inch clearance on the back bumper so i reversed it up :) man this is making me want to start the process now instead of tomorrow

Well after working on trying to get off the stock exhaust i just did not have the tool or the space to break the seal on the bolts for the hangers so i ended up taking it somewhere to have it installed Saturday morning. After the install i got in my car and reved it a little and it sounded great, still does but after a day of driving it around i am starting to get a hiss sound on decel around 2500 rpms not to mention there is a rattle that sounds like a bb bouncing around which could be something loose from the install. Has anyone around had this hiss with there exhaust that could lend a little help on how to fix, it seems to be getting worse. I will try and post a sound clip so you can see what i am talking about.

here is a vido of the sound

pg6speed 12-12-2010 05:11 PM

The hiss perfectly normal. Kind of a signature sound with these motors when you put a free flowing aftermarket exhaust with a true x pipe in it. Between 2000-2500 with the gas pedal released is where I get most of my hiss. Mine was not quite that loud with just the cat back but when I put on the headers it got much louder than yours.
As for the rattle it sounds like it could be the heat shield thats above the mufflers. There are directions with the exhaust that say to cut a portion of it off so that it will clear the mufflers, so if the shop didnt do that, that might be your issue. If they did remove it cut it and reinstall it it may be slightly bent from handling causing it to rattle, or not tightened properly. I dont know just throwing a few things out there.

murphman 12-12-2010 05:35 PM

yeah i did a little searching and found the hiss to be normal, as for the rattle i am going to have to wait till i have a second hand to hold the rpms somewhere between 1700 and 1900 rpms because i noticed that i can find the rpm making the noise and hold it there and it will just sit there and rattle but by myself i cant get out and search for the noise, thanks for the info bro

murphman 12-13-2010 07:32 PM

well i got under the car when got home and one of the bolts holding the X pipe to the muffler was way loose causing the annoying rattle so problem fixed and loving the exhaust!!!!!!

pg6speed 12-13-2010 09:39 PM

Glad everything worked out for you, congrats!
