Rolex 24 at Daytona 2012

Just wondering if anyone else was fortunate enough to be there. If so what were your thoughts on the race and the crowds this year? Got to say that it was an awesome race especially in the last couple hours. The crowds were a little horrendous to deal with compared to previous years but that was to be expected since it was the 50th anniversary.

Also if anyone has a favorite team/car and would like a picture or two let me know. I think I took somewhere north of 5000 pictures over the four day race weekend. Before anyone asks, AM Performance was NOT there for the Continental Tire Challenge so no pictures of their cars. :crying:

my friend trevor was there taking care of the lowenbrau 962, he even got to drive it during the parade laps before the race started. did you see it at all?

I wasn't there but I was watching most of the weekend. Great race and it was a great weekend overall for Ford.

AJ Allmendinger was on fire for the last 4 hours of the race.

Yeah I saw it. Gotta say I'm jealous of your friend.

yea me too a little^ he posted a pic behind the wheel while they were staged up on the track and said "driving the 962 on daytona where this car won twice in a row (and was the only one to ever do that), i don't know what else could top that". cwis and i joked that his future wife is going to make sure he takes that **** down after they get married :rofl2:

Of course Porsche dominated the GT class, they made up a large percentage of the field. I really wish Grand-Am would limit the number of cars a single team can bring to a race. (and yes that was aimed at TRG and their 5 Porsche line-up :shakes head:)

It also doesn't help that Porsche is just flat awesome when it comes to their GT program!

The new 458s did pretty well (and looked amazing).

I had a blast watching McNish and Allmendinger go at it. When AJ tried to go around the outside of McNish in turn 1 he wasn't having any of it and ran him off track. Then he got upset off 2 and body slammed him to no avail. This is going to be a good year for The Dinger, methinks!

yea with ferrari in the field of GT cars, and mercedes aiming to enter an SLR next year things are getting interesting there again.

m4a1mustang 01-31-2012 12:14 PM

Yeah it will be nice to beef up the GT field. I wish Ford would put some effort into the GT class. They are owning the field in the Continental Tire series but it would be nice to see them with a factory effort in GT.

Seemed like the R8 kept ending up in the tires whe I watched the end - thought they'd do better.

HKYStormFront 01-31-2012 11:15 PM

the announcers kept saying that the drivetrain was a little underwhelming and they were having clutch/transmission issues. not sure if that had to do with them going into the tires or not but it had to do with them not winning GT class.

Something about adapting to the grand am rules. They had to use a different setup or something with the clutch and it caused reliability issues. Vague, I know, but that's all I remember hearing.

HKYStormFront 02-01-2012 08:53 AM

yea they were basically using the same clutch as what's in the street cars. it was overheating and not working properly in these race conditions i believe. this is not a DSG trans iirc, it's the older single clutch trans lambo uses/used in the gallardo
