But credit to Red Bull for making all the right moves on pit stops and tires..

What in the world just happened? I don't know if it is the announcers fault for not knowing the rules or the FIA's fault for changing them at the last moment. But, they just talked for 5 minutes about how the lapped cars would not be allowed to pass the safety car.. then all of a sudden - Ok lapped cars pass the safety car?

Then of course the first lap where Hamilton goes off track to take the advantage and is allowed to supposedly slow down a little bit - (as opposed to letting Max pass to regain the advantage). I don't think I've ever seen that happen. In this case I don't think it would have mattered much, Hamilton had the pace to pass Max again anyways..

I wanted Max to win, but this just seemed cheap and inconsistent. I'm not sure if that's the fault of the announcers, the FIA, both. or me for not knowing the rules.

One last note - the safety car, and sprint for the final lap is just the typical Nascar race ending. Hamilton/MB owned that race.

Lewis got absolutely robbed. What in the hell was that?! I’m done. The Netflix fans can have this sport.

Indycar anyone?

"It's going to come down to the last lap of the last race!!" The one thing that I take after this years season is that the FIA NEEDS a total Restructuring from top to bottom!!!!

I think Max might lose his title if Merc takes this to court: https://twitter.com/phortonf1/status...925912581?s=21

I wanted max to win, but not like this. Lewis did a fantastic job keeping up a large gap on a worse set of tires. He deserved the win.

What Mercedes are protesting

Verstappen

Article 48.8: "With the exception of the cases listed under a) to h) below, no driver may overtake another car on the track, including the safety car, until he passes the Line (see Article 5.3) for the first time after the safety car has returned to the pits."

Classification

"If the clerk of the course considers it safe to do so, and the message "LAPPED CARS MAY NOW OVERTAKE" has been sent to all teams Competitors via the official messaging system, any cars that have been lapped by the leader will be required to pass the cars on the lead lap and the safety car.

"This will only apply to cars that were lapped at the time they crossed the Line at the end of the lap during which they crossed the first Safety Car line for the second time after the safety car was deployed. Having overtaken the cars on the lead lap and the safety car these cars should then proceed around the track at an appropriate speed, without overtaking, and make every effort to take up position at the back of the line of cars behind the safety car.

"Whilst they are overtaking, and in order to ensure this may be carried out safely, the cars on the lead lap must always stay on the racing line unless deviating from it is unavoidable. Unless the clerk of the course considers the presence of the safety car is still necessary, once the last lapped car has passed the leader the safety car will return to the pits at the end of the following lap."

Well so much for the Stewards being for MB.

Congratulations to Red Bull and the Orange Army. You have your champion!

Yep, I am going to take a break from F1. This ridiculous. We all have been robbed of what should been one of the greatest battles of all time.

2021 Formula 1 Thread

Ignoring the lap 1 incident… to me it comes down to the fact that Mercedes did not prepare Lewis for a safety car towards the end the race. Lapped cars always end up unlapping themselves under a safety car, which is what happened today.

Should the FIA have made the decision to unlap the cars from the start of the safety car? Yes. Really not sure why they made this call so late.

Did the lapped cars not being allowed to originally unlap themselves affect MB decision to stay out on the hard tires? I’m not sure.

Yes Lewis was the faster driver today, and sure Red Bull needed 100 things to fall into place for max to end up in the perfect situation with 1 lap to go, but I still think MB made some wrong calls regarding tire strategies which led to Lewis being unprepared for a safety car. MB, with their lead at the time, could have easily reacted to Max’s pit stop after the Giovinazzi incident, resulting in Lewis having newer tires just like Max.

So in summary… the FIA needs to have more set-in-stone rules that follow a predetermined procedure, MB screwed up a tire decision, and RB got lucky with how the race unfolded in their hands, despite Lewis clearly being the faster car today.

Mercedes lodges intention to appeal dismissal of Abu Dhabi GP protest

Mercedes has lodged its intention to appeal the stewards’ dismissal of its Abu Dhabi race result protest following the controversial end to the Formula 1 season.

Mercedes filed two protests with the FIA stewards at the Yas Marina Circuit over the race restart after Max Verstappen passed Lewis Hamilton on the final lap of the race to win the world championship.

The stewards dismissed both protests, including one of the resumption of the race with one lap remaining, but Mercedes has confirmed it has lodged its intention to appeal the decision.

“We have lodged our intention to appeal Document 58 / the decision of the stewards to dismiss the team’s protest,” said a Mercedes spokesperson after the race on Sunday.

It means Mercedes now has 96 hours to decide if it will continue and formally lodge an appeal with the FIA.
