Going to Vegas? Watch out for Nevada "Move-Over" Law
 

If any of you are planning to go to Vegas or any part of Nevada this summer, be on the look out for the Nevada highway patrol's stepped up enforcement of the "Move-over" law.

Basically, if you see an emergency vehicle on the shoulder with flashing lights and you are on the adjacent lane, you must perform a "safe lane change" away from the adjacent lane.

How do I know this is for real? Why, I was one of the target of this enforcement effort, of course. :icon14:

I am convinced the dude picked my MB Z out of the crowd because our Zs are just so eye catching. :driving:

This was such and easy thing to catch since while I was sitting on the shoulder with the cop's flashing lights behind me, 80% of the cars that zoomed by did not change lanes.

This is actually consider a fairly major violation in Nevada - same as exceeding the speed limit by 31-40 MPH. I would've gotten a $395 fine and "4 points" (Nevada speak, still translates to 1 point in CA".)

Fortunately, I was able to get it reduced to a parking violation and the fine reduced by half through a Nevada traffic attorney with only $50 attorney fee. :happydance:

I think FL is the same. You have to move over on the highway unless, of course, there's a car in the middle blocking you from doing so. Personally, I have always moved over when I see a cop, trucker or anyone sitting on the side. Every time I see some family car stopped on the shoulder, I think some little kid is going to open thier door and step out in my lane.

I think moving over is common sense and it's a shame they're part of the new revenue laws. When I read "move-over law" I was hoping it was about Nevada cracking down on numbskulls cruising in in the passing lane. Nothing is worse than these idiots camping in the passing lane on cruise control and clueless why there's a whole string of cars behind them flashing their high beams.

Since they obviously didn't read the driver manual or they're genuinely too stupid to be operating a motor vehicle, I'm all in favor of harsher enforcement or impounding their cars. Same for crappy parkers. Jees, I sorta went off on that, sorry. Back to Nevada.

That's true pretty sure we got it in Missouri as well. If you can't move over you're supposed to reduce your speed (ie under the speed limit)

They have signs and everything here in West Virginia about this. I figured it was just common sense, but not around here I guess.

Yes this law is true! I enforce it as much as I can, Not to be a **** but for the fact I want to go home at the end of my shift. There are more cops killed in the line of duty every year by being hit by a car then Gunfire. In TN this Ticket is a $500.00 fine and 6 points on your drivrs license. Last year there was a TN state trooper killed when a truck failed to move over and struck and killed the Trooper. He is survived by his wife and three small children.

It is the same law here. I believe if it isn't safe to move over, you have to slow down to 45 when passing the stopped vehicle iirc.

My post was not intended to complain about getting caught for the violation but rather to call to attention this law for the Californians. Based on research after getting the ticket, the same law was only introduced in California in 2010. And given what I see every day in So Cal, it's not widely known or at least followed. I certainly missed it when it came out.

While I would normally slow down and moved the car to the left side of my lane away from the shoulders, without knowing this law, I seldom ever make a complete lane change.

It was an expensive lesson that I learned so I wanted to share with everyone. And hopefully, keep a few police officers safe plus saving fellow Z owners some cash.....so you guys can lose it all to the Vegas casinos. :icon23:

Thank you for posting it, I know it was not meant as a complaint, the law is a good law it's really the only one that is meant to protect police and first responders. And good luck in Vegas guys. Remember what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas...
