Roads not-to-be-missed?

Hey all—

Gonna be driving from SF to SD in a few weeks and planning on taking my time getting down there. This is my dream route, but it's long as hell. I may cut out Big Sur and do that another time. I wanted to see if anyone had any roads they thought totally mandatory for doing this drive in a Z. Thanks!

Ca hwy 2 Glendale east up Angeles national forest. Awesome drive did it last week took it all the way to big pine, got some snow and ice roads but great place to test cars handling lots of snake roads. If you know need 4 speed the run kind of reminds me of that idk. Good luck.

CA-74 E to CA-74 E - Google Maps Is a nice cruise too. Be careful. It's highly technical with lots of sharp hairpins and severe elevation changes.

PCH man! Pacific Coast Highway. Very scenic, beautiful, fun road.

PCH by far is a better drive than the I-5 South. Here's the best route, including Big Sur, Morro Bay (Get some chowder or else). I've also made sure you don't miss out on Malibu Canyon. If you're in the area on a weekend morning one or more of us will run through it with you. Pretty much straight 405 to San Diego from there.

San Francisco, CA to San Diego, CA - Google Maps

See you soon!

California 9 (Saratoga to Santa Cruz)

I agree with the majority here and say drive as much as PCH as possible.

I suggest you get a GPS w/ live traffic updates and you check out CalTrans.ca.gov for road closures. A part of PCH near Big Sur was hit w/ some rock slides.

Happy driving..

Go early to avoid traffic, it'll be worth it. Make sure you stop at the Road House for some great food while enjoy the view of Lake Elsinore. PM me for more details in you want

I mentioned ortega hwy in post #3. It truly is a delight when there's no traffic. Reminds me of the dragon.

lol, yeah i havent been down the south end of it yet cause the group i was with got their directions mixed up and forgot about it completely, but it is a very fun drive if you get the time to do it. the only downside to it is that it seemed like the county had not been keeping up on road repair when i was up there, not to many potholes but there were a few big ones that i had some close calls with. One thing that it did do for me though is to help me decide which route i wanted to go with mods for my Z :D
