front license plate law cvc. 5200
So currently, there is an officer in my campus who is directly targeting me for front license plate tickets. I don't know what I did to piss him off, but there are plenty of other students leaving the front license plate on the dash and not getting a ticket. The way I placed my license plate is at the visor, which is in compliance to cvc 5200.
I understand that he is doing his job, but seriously.. Here is the license plate in question. |
Maybe you ****** his daughter? I don't know. I'm sure the guy's not standing around with a tape measure but if he really wanted to screw you I guess he MIGHT be able to write you up for this?
5201. (a) License plates shall at all times be securely fastened to the vehicle for which they are issued so as to prevent the plates from swinging, shall be mounted in a position so as to be clearly visible, and so that the characters are upright and display from left to right, and shall be maintained in a condition so as to be clearly legible. The rear license plate shall be mounted not less than 12 inches nor more than 60 inches from the ground, and the front license plate shall be mounted not more than 60 inches from the ground... Other than that, what has he actually written you up for? |
There's no way the visor on the Z is higher than 60" off the ground. Total bull$hit. I would find out who his boss is and go talk to them. Or just go straight to the police department if they're not under university security. If someone is giving out tickets for non-ticketable offenses on the behalf of the local PD, they will certainly want to take care of it.

This argument has gone on for years.
Attaching the lic plate anywhere other than the front of the car is viewed as a violation. You should just get a Stillen lic plate holder for the front and be compliant. Accept your on his radar and unless you're going to lawyer up? Move on no reason to make it more than it is unless you have plenty of $$$. |
same thing in ohio... just put it on the front bumper where it's suppose to be... life's too short... pick your battles... doesn't bother me as much now that i got personalized plates
|
eeee... dang bro. Im in Los Angeles too. Got my z new in 2012 and have never mounted or drilled the front plates. no issue ever with cops. I've been face to face on opposite stop lights/signs. Reversed parked at 7/11 while they are there. got pulled over once for slightly speeding on valley blvd... guess what lol he let me go because he said "I will give you a warning this time. Plus I love the sound and look of those exhaust. nice z" fast intentions FTW lol
|
I just got a ticket, and the cop said "you don't have a front plate" and I replied "we don't require them in Texas" to which he said "we're in California now, you have to abide by CA laws"
LOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLL... Sure... If that was the case every cop should sit on the border of AZ and nail every guy with tint. |

Exactly! Can you imagine the backlash from the tourism industry if CA cops started writing tickets for all their ridiculously stupid requirements to out of state visitors who are from states where those requirements do not apply? |

OP, just find Mr. Po Po's privately owned vehicle and swap his plates with someone elses. All you need is a phillips and a lookout buddy. Yea, I can be bad at times.....real bad |
I'm done going against the grain. Too much attention as it is. No tint and plates on the front. Got stopped for plates in Northridge, CA by an officer who made a left turn as I was headed towards him and I saw him next to me two blocks after seeing him make the turn. He clearly went out of his way to follow me about not having plates. I gave him a lame excuse about someone trying to steal my bracket and that just pissed him off. No fix it tkt given but hate dealing with zealots who does not have better things to do. Just put it on and not worry about it. You'll get used to it.
|
My plate and bracket are in the trunk, if an officer want to go out of his way to give me **** about it, i can just put it on then and there. No need for a fix it ticket.
|
Hands up don't shoot!!

Just remember guys that anything you drive or ride starts with "sports" you will be profiled and looked at differently. Don't give a cop a BS reason to stop you.
Mount your bracket and call it a day. |

I heard that the cops were fully enforcing the front plate law due to the red light cameras awhile back in the LA, SGV and OC area. I was wondering if they are still enforcing it now that most of the red light cameras are decommissioned?
I am debating if I should put the front plate back on since I also have tinted front windows. I don't want to draw too much attention risking tix for both the front plate and tinted windows. Is it a 'fix it' tix or there is also a fine? Thoughts? Thx. |

I really prefer not to give a cop any reason what so ever to pull me over so I comply with license plate placement and move on. |
Yea.. I am thinking about the same. Even it may be just a 'fix it' tix, they are likely to hit me with the tinted windows also.

I received a ticket for No Front License Plate, purchased a Mower Axle Tow Bolt Hole plate holder, then had to take the car to the court, has a cop come sign off on the ticket, then go into the court house, wait for about 3 hours just to pay a $50.00 administrative fee.
They will get you one way or the other. By the way, Front license Plate rental - $50.00 plus deposit |

Try this on for size. the z does not come with an oem attachment for a front plate. We would have to modify the vehicle to permanently mount a front license plate. According to ca law, oem manufactures are not allowed to sell a vehicle in ca without a way to mount the front license plate.
CA should take the issue up with nissan. And even if nissan incorporated a front mount, it wouldn't apply to previous models. |
this sounds like a lot of hassles...

If my Z was my daily I would figure out some quick release method to mount the front plate, not worth the hassle. Since I only drive it on the weekends and never park on the street I haven't had a problem the last 2 years |
I got my reply to my appeal a while back. It was upheld for some reason which I don't remember. The officer did bring up a good point and made me feel like a dummy at the same time. Needless to say, she tore me a new one and she seemed pissed (judging by the writing) that I went so far as to waste her time by writing a page long written appeal.
I paid the fine via mail because their online payment system tacks an extra $3-$4 per citation (I had two no front plates citation $20 + $~8 are you kidding me?). Campus police = the Gestapo. The front plates are attached and now I am a law abiding citizen... |
Campus police = one step above mall security
Probably just bitter because they aren't real cops :icon17: |

I found a place that would make me a sticker of my plates. I took a hi res photo and I'm asking them to make it 5/8" less all the way around and will stick it in the most desirable place I see fit. |
Saw Nissan's retarded instructions for drilling to put that plastic POS on the front.
I ordered the moweraxle but really don't want to put a front plate on. |
I have the Moweraxle one as well. it looks kind of cool off to the side
