Yeah if they were loose then the pre-load was not...

Yeah if they were loose then the pre-load was not set when they were installed. Also, if the lock ring wasn't tightened down enough, then the vibrations from driving could have loosened it up.

Judging from the picture and not seeing them on the car... maybe you didn't have enough pre-load on the rear springs when they were in the spring buckets??? But definitely, if you mechanic tells you...
