The best plan would be to defer the car stuff for a year and bank every dime. Then revisit next year and walk into the deal with a huge wad of cash. Plus you can plan your build down to the nuts and bolts while you wait so all you have to do when it's time to pull the trigger is start writing checks.

That was the original plan, but I want to get your opinions before I make that decision. If that's the route I take I'll trade in the both cars so we can get the wife something she'll enjoy. We are not changing our life style so stacking cash will be easy.

But I just don't want to look back and say. "Man if I would of kept that car..." know what I'm saying

It's not the fun thing to do, but it's the right thing to do. You're in a great position to get your finances in order. You may not get this chance again for a long time especially if you start playing with super cars. I put off my turbo build for years while I put all my bonuses and overtime earnings towards paying everything I could off. Now any extra cash I have can go towards my hobby without any guilt or risk. It's a good feeling. Sure cars are never a smart investment, but if you've taken care of everything else then at least you're still in good shape financially.

That being said, my vote is for the C7. 700 hp is easily achievable without breaking the bank. There's a shop already making over 1000 whp on the stock block (of course they don't expect it to last long). Good luck my friend and congrats on the promotion

Thanks puck and we have we were almost 40k in debt not including house and cars. Student loans are a bitch! But the last I would say 6 years have been pretty tough with budgeting and paying everything off.

I won't even tell you how much money and time it took to fix my credit... SMH young and dumb I tell you

Nice job paying the debt down  I still say keep at it a bit longer before making a big purchase. With the new income you've got coming in, it shouldn't take long to get on top of everything.

I was thinking of upgrading for a while too. As you know, I decided to keep the car and go the turbo route. So far I'm really happy I did. It saved me a ton of cash and I've got more than enough power. If you really feel like you need 700 hp (whp?), I'd look to other cars. It just seems like too much trouble to hit those numbers with the Z. Plus traction is so limited at 500 whp, I can't imagine trying to use 200 more.

THIS. After ~450-500whp, it's all the same. Massive wheelspin. Unless we get some suspension parts to help us put power down, it's all a moot point.

Justice97 02-27-2014 09:41 AM

If I had the choice I would go no where near the GTR. I don't think it is sexy enough for the power it has.

When one looks at a Porsche or an exotic, you are like, "is that car fast I bet it moves," "how does it handle I bet it's sweet in the corners,"
People have asked me these questions about my Z.
Most people will look at a GTR and say a what?, oh....ok nice car. Fast? if you say so.
Don't get me wrong, I think the GTR is an awesome car. For 100K, It better be so sexy I want to have sex with it. The GTR doesn't do that for me.

Personally a Porsche or stick with Z.
I am not a power monger though.

Fountainhead 02-27-2014 09:56 AM

Personally, I don't consider any car with 4 seats sporty enough, but the GTR is obviously an exception performance wise. 911tt would be my choice. I like the *** on that car more than my Z.

So here's where I need help my goal is to be at around 700 HP. Should I spend the money on the Z to get it to my goal (JTran out of Houston will do all the work) or should I trade it in for a higher platform? Cars I have been looking at include the Nissan GTR, Mustang Saleen 351 black label, or Cadillac CTS V.

As always your input is gladly appreciated.

could pick up a used 2009 GTR for around 50-60k and then buy the Alpha 9 package for another 50-60k, you'll have a completely built Supercar built all for around the same price as you would with something brand new

Malm 02-27-2014 12:36 PM

Stick with the z and see how crazy you can modify it

Doesn't the Porsche TT have 4 seats? I have a friend with a 2013 911 4 and it has a back seat or at least something that wants to be a back seat when it grows up!

b15 02-27-2014 02:18 PM

Purely subjective, but of those I would get the GTR followed by the Porsche. I've never been a fan of the Mustang or vette. I know the C7 is a performer, but it doesn't have the sexy factor for me.

I did notice a few concerns with parts and maintenance cost. If you have the money to shell out for a car in this power caliber (or modify the Z up to this caliber), the maintenance/operating cost should not be of much concern. If it is, perhaps you should reconsider the price point.

While I agree it shouldn't be a major concern, it is a factor. If you've got two cars that are equal in your eyes, and one costs 3x as much as the other to maintain, that's something you need to think about before purchase.

Agreed. I was referring to after purchase. If you've decided that you can buy an $80-$100k GTR/911/etc, you shouldn't really fret about the operating/maintenance costs.

equalme 02-27-2014 03:02 PM

I'm not too familiar with GTR maintenance costs...but I read that the whole car does run very hot.

Is it because of that which requires more frequent fluid changes or does the GTR require Nissan specific fluids with no alternatives?

wait one year, save money. the hell you rushing to get yourself back into debt again Dzel. :shakes head:

GL and congrats!

Waiz 02-27-2014 05:35 PM

If you are dead set on getting something then get a GT-R but just be aware that your insurance might go through the roof. If you are only driving 1,000 miles a year maintenance won't be an issue at all.

If it was me I wouldn't make any rash decisions for awhile, just see how things work out and decide down the road rather than rushing into debt again like kenchan suggested as well

that's not an upgrade.... :stirthepot:

The GTR is a good choice, maybe a used 911.

to be honest, when you have a sports car that its value is in the 100k range, the cost of the maintenance will not be cheap.

I read through the thread and notice you just recently got to a better position financially, if you are going to purchase a new car, yes it's an upgrade and it's a reward to yourself but are you sure you wanna put yourself into bigger car-loan aka bigger payment??

Plus all the extra cost on the maintenance on those kind of car.... :ugh2:

why dig a hole when you just filled one...?

you just got promoted and your wife got a raised and your debt is down to 2k, I will suggest you don't change the way you spend, thus you will start to have some savings in your bank account.

Trust me, you'll be much much much happier to have a decent amount of saving in the bank account than to drive a 911.

car wise, stick to the Z and put some money in to mod it, step by step, it won't cost you arm & leg overnight thus it'll be like a mod journey

after all, you will have your 700whp Z, which you'll be proud of your own mod-project, AND you have a good lump-sum of saving in the bank account, which gives you much more options on what you can/want to do in the future.

All of your input is greatly appreciated. Just ate dinner and looks like a decision with the Z has been made. We're going car shopping for the wife this weekend. Trading in both hers and mine :( We will get a 3 year contract for the vehicle no more. We'll save money and see where I'll be at on this in say a year or so.

So if someone wants my wheels and exhaust let me know. Local preferred since I'll need the buyers stocks.

GTR not even a question. My buddy couldnt get any traction most of the time in his monster Z06. Now hes in a GTR loving every minute of it. Lifes not fair if you can even be a baller and afford that and a mortgage.

If you're OK with a stock vehicle, new Z06 all the way. I wouldn't mod it and throw away the warranty for the first year of a new car, though. Maybe once the first model year quirks get worked out.

Dzel 02-28-2014 03:59 PM

Well even better financial news. My 18 yr old nephew loves my Z so much he offered to buy it from me. Well get it out of my name and he takes over payments.

So if that goes down were keeping the ride that my wife has now. No sense in trading it in.

Yeah the model but it has a built LS1 with LS3 heads bored with a D1 pro charger on 17 psi. With a methanol kit 4.11 gears race suspension. My project for the year is to get the roll cage put in upgrade the heads and intake and grab a 20 psi pulley. Should be at around 750.

Also just bought some Bogarts and 30' slicks!!!!
