Thoughts on 09 WRX?

Hey guys, what are your thoughts on the 09 WRX? Numbers look good, 4.7 sec 0-60 and Subaru seems to be dealing on them right now - 0% for 60 or 2.9% for 72.

good performance but the hatch is ridiculous looking. go EVOX GSR

I like the look of the hatch. A lot.

The 09 WRX's (non-STI) had some serious engine problems, though.

Do your research before buying one.

They're really neat cars, in my opinion. I'd considered buying an 08 STI a year ago.

Apparently it was a problem before. My dad just bought one and found out from a Subaru tech that since about the Dec builds they have fixed the issue. Guess we'll see. Although apparently Subaru isn't fessing up to any problems or admitting they changed anything. Something to do with the metal coating on the rod or something. Nice car though. I have an 02 and love it.

If I remember correctly, the ball bearings weren't coated properly & under heat were malleable & would warp leading to engine failure.

Subaru was replacing the engines in question, thankfully.

good bang for the buck..love subarus

The old WRX's were neat cars, but had HORRIBLE brakes. Thankfully the new ones are much better.

I think both the hatch and the sedan look good, but I do prefer the sedan.

I like the wrx. I was actually shopping around for one but I don’t think it is fast enough for me. The car does 0-60 in 4.7 however, that is with a violent redline launch. I would never do that in my daily driver. I think after I move back down south in February I will be getting a Z. You just can’t beat the performance for the dollar on the 370z. You can even look for a used one now to save some cash.

I agree, 4.7 is still pretty impressive though, regardless of the launch.

My brother in law had a '09 WRX and within the first 8,000 miles the engine blew up and had to be replaced.

Yeah you have to pay attention to the build dates. Don't buy one with a build date before OCT2008. After that they fixed the issue and there haven't been any problems.

Well if you are like me and don't plan on launching the car at redline then I would look at the street start times (5-60) to get a better indication of how fast the car really is. Another thing to compare is the trap speeds for the 1/4 mile.

If you plan to do more than a few track days, don't buy a Subaru. Track day issues aside, I miss my 05 STi sometimes.

Had an 06 WRX before it was totalled. Basically I had it narrowed down to the 370z vs. 09 WRX sedan. The Z won out but only because of person prefrence in styling. I wanted something more grown up and wanted a sports car, not a sports sedan. It doesn't help that I'm not a huge fan of the newer body design either. I can honestly say that if it still had the 06-07 body but with all the upgrades of the 09 I would probably have gone with the WRX. For 25k you can't do much better, not to mention that with 2k or less in mods you have a car that will break into the 12's.

The current STI is not my cup of tea being that it's a hatch. Plus for the money I can't see why it only has 305hp. Not to mention that for much less money the WRX is only .1sec slower in the 1/4 mile and pretty damn close in cornering ability. About the only thing the new STI has over the WRX is the 6-speed tranny that is much stronger. In general the subaru community is puzzled as to why the WRX was made so much better closing the gap between it and STI when they should have also increased the STI's performance.

The WRX is a nice car and aside from the more subdued looks of the newer design it really is a good bang for the buck.
