What year used GTR
I stink at web searches.
What year used GTR is the best value? Reduced HP to save $. I once read you can get your older GTR brought up to current spec for $20K. I welcome any thoughts here. |
I been seeing 09s more and more for around 50-60K. 2012 i see a few in the mid 70K range w 20,000 miles. I am searching as well.

65K for one lower than 20k miles...
http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-s...14727659&Log=0 Honestly the fact that you can get THAT much car for 50-60k is awesome. Double the Z. |
Probably an 09-10, but make sure the warranty wasn't voided from tuning, excessive launching, etc.
|
the answer varies depending on your use and whether you care about the warranty

Personally, I love the warranty, and I'd get a later model so I can USE launch control for shitz n giggles without breaking anything That tranny costs like 20k to replace |

You can get the launch control software updated through the dealership so you can use it without warranty concerns IIRC. You just can't over do it with the number of launches though.

Also, to the OP, have you ever looked into the operating costs of the GTR? I cannot afford one, yet (considered buying one with my brother)... I LOVE the car too, but when the operating cost of my GTR being a "reliable" Japanese car is MORE than a Ferrari... Count me out... (Ferrari now offers 7 years of complimentary maintenance on all new models, the only thing that is required is an oil change every 12k miles or 12 months, yeah, I guess brake pads aren't included) EDIT: had to add :stirthepot: |
Yeah, I think the problem with the early software was you had to turn VDC off to use launch control.....and then they would void the warranty because you had VDC off. I think the newer launch control software allows you to launch with VDC on.
|
I think that is was that it launched harder. The new software tames the launch a bit more to save the tranny. I believe the 09's had the hardest launch, hence why they went through so many trannies.

oh yah, dont forget they also have failing steering locks!
|
My thing is what GTR that hasn't been beat up on. Most people beat up on them then traded in for newer models. But the car can take a lot. Maintence is high also.

09's are fine especially if you buy one sold after January 2009 all of those got the LC update before they left the dealer lot. just have a dealer do an inspection and have them check for VDC OFF STALL STARTS that will tell you the # of LCs with VDC off. i wouldnt buy one that still has the original LC with VDC off launches
personally and this is contraversial but i also wouldnt buy a GTR with any sort of tune but thats just me. 99% of them are gonna be just fine but the more enthusiast oriented owner would have it tuned and more likely to drive it hard. There are a bunch of 20K or under cars out there that probably arent too beat on. but if im saving up and putting up 60K + i want a GTR driven by some doctor as a weekend car. Steering Lock got a nationwide recall and a new part was replaced so shouldnt be an issue if the owner had it done 10's are almost identical to 9's and dont cost but maybe 3K(ish) or so more than a used 9. that might be an option aswell... a little better piece of mind on the tranny i wouldnt get a 2011 as they are mechanically very similar to the two previous years except for a better NAV and suspension.. but they had 2 years of price increase and if you are looking for best bang for the buck you arnt getting too much more for a car thats still somewhere in the low 70's maintenance is a big myth.. besides eating through tires its not much more to maintain than your Z. $100 oil changes every 6K miles isnt a big deal and the tranny/diff changes are suggested at 18K miles and now 36K miles so if you are buying used hopefully this will have recently be done brakes last a good bit unless you are a track junkie ive never had to even change pads on my either of mine and i average 10 Autox a year with a couple track days with maybe 5-6K a year mileage tires are hard to get past.. with no tracking the summers will last 7-8K transmission replacements are now more like 12K not 20K and that is seldom needed. unless you are tuned or are doing doughnuts with VDC off nissan will probably warranty it.. and if not a lot of skilled GTR shops to rebuilds for 3K.. so worst case its not the end of the world |
Thanks for the info MC

forgot this one. no that is a myth based on a little bit of fact.. in japan there are refresh kits but they only include things like suspension components some interior accents and other minor things like that. whatever HP level or LC version your GTR comes with atleast from nissan you are stuck with.. of course there is a HUGE aftermarket for that type of need |

Thank you one and all. MC, you really know your GTR's. Merry Christmas. |
