We've reported on this before, but we now have stronger evidence than ever that Toyota is getting back into the affordable sports-coupe game with an all-new model priced at around $20,000–$25,000. This front-engine/rear-drive 2-door will reincarnate the spirit of the 1983–1987 Corolla Levin/Trueno (AE86), a car that's still popular today, especially among drift enthusiasts. According to our friends at Best Car magazine, Toyota's code name for this future sports car is 086A. That it's so similar to AE86 is no coincidence.

Toyota is partnering with Subaru to bring this project to reality. In fact, most of the engineering seems to be coming from the company known for its all-wheel-drive rally cars. Powering the future coupe will be Subaru's 2.0-liter flat-4 equipped with a new direct-injection system, tuned to produce an impressive 200 bhp and 145 lb.-ft. of torque. We predict the car will weigh about 2700 lb., so expect fairly quick acceleration times, probably around 6.0 sec. to 60 mph. The suspension will consist of MacPherson struts up front and a multilink setup at the rear, with the chassis based on that of the Subaru Impreza and Legacy.

Toyota will mainly be in charge of the car's styling. Although both Toyota and Subaru versions will be offered, the two models won't look much different, apart from badging — think Toyota Matrix and Pontiac Vibe.

The car is scheduled to appear sometime in 2011 or 2012. If this future car truly is a reincarnation of the AE86, Toyota and Subaru will have a big hit on their hands.

it's a good price.

with the Subaru engine, will it be mounted low like on Subarus to lower the center of gravity??

shabarivas 06-03-2009 01:02 PM

Looks sick :)

phelan 06-03-2009 01:41 PM

Where's my flip-up lights???

shabarivas 06-03-2009 01:44 PM

Ha ha ... there is no mention of a turbo but yet in the comments in that link - people are like turbo this turbo that lol...

Looks interesting. Nice to hear Toyota is getting back into the game. Hopefully this can lead to greater things, like the long await revival of the Supra.

The weight is the only thing I am worried about. I mean my Z is only 3150 and my old del Sol was only 2350 and it was considered overweight. At this weight and power you're looking at a Civic Si. Big deal. Where are the 2200 lb 200 hp small cars?

k20z3 06-03-2009 03:02 PM

Yeah since I owned a celica on NC.org there was a kid thats aunt was working on this...
ITs suppose to be the new alltrac or the GT4

They've already stated that it will be RWD. A 2700lb GT4. I've been surprised before by Toyota, and if their in charge of the chassis and body work you never know so we'll see. *crosses fingers*

I hope some months after release both Subaru and Toyota versions put out a high end model. Give em 300hp/tq, AWD for the Subby and only RWD Toyotas

Interesting...

molamann 06-07-2009 10:28 PM

It seems like they didn't keep any of the original styling?

The green one looks like it would have been a mean Supra MKV.

Yeah, it looks like this new AE86 completely ditches the old design, but can you really blame them after so many years. It's been over 20, hasn't it?

?!?!?!?! It looks like a stretched out Yaris. :ugh:

Also, it seems like "retro" is in. Look at the 370Z, it has hints of the old 240's and domestic muscles have been doing it recently.

BanningZ 06-08-2009 05:43 AM

Honestly I'd say RWD is the new "in"...again. Its been a while, but the past few years have brought drifting more stateside and the appeal for RWD has grown.

New technology for power and efficiency in RWD, vs. the past that said we should have a 4 cyl. wash box in FWD have found a medium. It seems like a natural amalgam for the two to meld.

I'm all for it, and we'll find that 2400lb RWD 4 cyls. are going to hit the market again with a big impact and more stock HP than we've ever seen before. It may be a day for four bangers again, but nothing will ever beat a 6 or 8 cylinder under the will of your foot.

The future is unpredictable. We'll see.

The green is next gen Supra is sexy...what are you waiting for Toyota? I would trade my Z in for this.

New news!!...

The Toyota insider has apparently been sitting on this information for quite some time and has only now decided to come forward with it after seeing conflicting information in the Japanese press about two different body styles being tested. The insider claims he has seen the 086A and is adamant that only one body style will be offered and that body style will differ only very slightly between the Toyota and Subaru versions, such as the front grille, head/tail light treatment and badges. When the insider was asked about the appearance of the 086A, he clearly pointed out that it will be lower and wider than the old ZZT231 Celica and will have an “orthodox 2+2 coupe style, with a silhouette resembling the Lexus LF-A”. The renders above show what the 086A could look like with lines similar to the LF-A.

If it turns out this car will only be available with a six-speed then that will be a problem....for me.
