My big holdup is the ringland issue. I'd only be taking it to stage 2, but... yeah, too worried about something shitty happening. =/

/\ I know the 08s and some 09s had this prob but I was under the impression that for 2010+ it was resolved?

Nice car

Nope. 2011s have busted too.

I look at it like this, if I have ringland issues, I'll just request a dealer buy back. My dealer told me this was an option.
I guess if you don't mod your car, this works, but like I said -- I'd probably mod mine. :/

hmmm, well that's disappointing. Well, isn't the next gen wrx/sti moving to the 2.0L motor in the BRZ? maybe the best move is to wait it out and see what comes in the next couple years.

Then again, if you are basically stock, it doesn't matter since you'll be covered under warrantee like you said.

sfearl1 12-31-2011 07:20 PM

Love the STi, considered trading my 2011 Evo for one. But the stock internals won't handle anything past stage 2, and the reason for me getting rid of the Evo originally was bc I wanted big power - and didn't need to be spending all my money on mods. I'm afraid it would've happened all over again w/ that car. MUCH happier with the Z stock than the Evo (and probably STi). Glad you're happy though, they are damn good looking cars!

Not really. Almost entirely solved pre '10. Claimed Ring land issues since have been largely discredited. See nasioc...

That plus the additional power potential with mods and I wanted something with awd and boost. Plus I can take this to the mountains. The z was too much of a garage queen. I never enjoyed it because I was always worried about it. This car I'm actually going to USE.

sounds like a good choice then

Do you mind linking me to a post or two about this? I've been browsing iwsti, not nasioc.

There was ringland issues because the STI run's too lean up top from the factory tune. Once you richen up the top end you have no issue. They also blow from people adding performance parts without a tune and leaning it out even more.

yes i am personally very much pleased that they left it and stayed away.

I didn't care for the hatch either. This design is just right for this car  and this blue is beautiful

Ya I've been reading on iwsti that most people think the factory tune is more unsafe than any aftermarket tune. I need to find a respectable tuner who knows these cars and pick his brain. I'm really not looking to mod anytime soon but if the factory tune is lacking something critical, I might have no other choice.

i have the cobb tune on my 335. i like it a lot. is that what you plan to go with on the sti?

370zFORme!! 01-01-2012 07:02 PM

Jeff was the cobb tune a plug and play tune or was it done by a tuner? It all really depends on the reliability of the tune for me. I want fast but safe, if that makes sense.

Haha pretty much huh?

NewlyIMPORTed 01-01-2012 07:51 PM

I just have the cobb OTS tune and It is great. Yeah a protune could squeeze out a little more HP but I know its safe now, and it feels so full up top. The car is so down-tuned and lean from the factory that most people say (and I agree) the sooner the better for a tune.

nuTinmuch 01-01-2012 11:34 PM

I've read about a couple of people with stage 1 OTS tunes with no other mods blowing up and pointing to ringlands. That's what bothers me.

Heres a somewhat confidence inspiring thread on the issue.

The Official: I have not had any broken ring land thread! - Subaru Impreza WRX STI Forums: IWSTI.com

phelan 01-02-2012 11:23 AM

The ringland issues on newer models are a result of people not breaking in their cars correctly, and going nuts with CAI / bolt-ons without ever tuning. The Z is somewhat forgiving of this, the WRX line isn't.

As far as tunes go, I had the Cobb AP, but I have to say the latest updated HyperTech is a BADASS piece of work, and is safe too. Just to give you a second option from the whole "Cobb or bust!" opinion on NASIOC.

Phelan so you didnt get a protune? I think from what ive been reading a custom protune is better for my needs because I want safe AFR ratios (as the factory tune is very lean up top) and some added power while im at it. I dont plan on doing anything other than exhaust, wheels and tune on this car as its a lease and I might either trade it in for a newer iteration or just buy it out.

I didn't get a protune. Don't see a need for it, to be honest. The maps I have from HyperTech are plenty good, and I feel pretty comfortable as it stands.

With that said, as an STi owner you won't have an option lol. Cobb is the only dominant company with out of the box STi tunes.

Not gonna hold my breath for a new iteration of the STi - bleh, the new models look weak compared to the GRenades. :)

Hey 370forme. Nice car and color I got myself a 12 Sti sedan as well and I love it and love it some more. I had ordered the plasma blue as well but it was Takeing to long to get in so I just took a silver one. Sti deff needs a tune couse soa tunes em lean for emission reasons. Good luck with your car :)

Thanks man. I just got a Cobb AP and the OTS stage 1 map really makes this car a different beast. No hesitation at WOT and the throttle response has gotten way better. Are you on IWSTI.COM? Good luck and let me know if you have any questions about the STI.
