Try the penny test, if you can see the top of Abe's head it's time to replace.
You place the penny head down in the deep part of the primary tread marks,
test several areas.

If you want to be a little more precise you can try to pick up a tread depth
gauge at a tire shop like Firestone. Tires are required to be changed when
tread depth reaches 2/32".

It's not the tread I'm worried about, but the overall condition of the tires. I see all those cracks and I don't know if that's supposed to be normal wear and tear, or if the tire is now unsafe to drive on. See where I'm coming from?

Those tires look pretty old. Look on the sidewall, there should be 4 numbers close to a DOT stamp, such as 1106, which means they were built on the 11th week of 2006.

Tires deteriorate with time, and if they are 8 yrs or older, it's time to buy new tires.

Thanks. I didn't know tires had a manufacture date on them. Even though they still got some tread left, they look beat up. I'll change them out this week.

Probably a good idea...better safe than sorry.
