Tell me a little about the GT-R
I know most things about it. The problem that I am having isthe reliability and maintanence. I know its an 80k+ car but how reliable is it? Is it really as pricey to maintain as some people have put it to be? Looking to buy two cars next year (one for me and one for wife) and have possibly talked the wife into waiting another half a year and getting a GT-R. One of her requirements is that its as least as reliable as the Z and not retardedly overpriced to fix. Anyway thanks for your imput.

I would head over to NAGTROC - The Nissan GT-R Owners Club - Home, might get some more responses.

"too much" is subjective. the GTR is reasonable for the level of performance that you get out of it in return. if you are wanting a high performance car, for whatever reason, then the GTR is a steal. but if you are just looking for a daily driver then you may want to look elsewhere. it's a great driving car, it's super easy to drive, and comfortable on a daily basis but it can get pricey when you consider the cost of brake rotor replacement and tires every so often. as for the maintenance, DO take it to the dealership, they are the only people who have experience with them other than some of the sponsor shops on forums like this. joe-bob with an associates degree down at the local tire and lube (that's me by the way) shouldn't get within 10' of the car with any kind of tool to work on it. it is a highly sophisticated car and different from many cars that are out there. if you were to buy a 911 turbo for $150k you would take it to the dealership to get it worked on. the GTR provides the same level of performance and comfort for half the price so base it on that, not how expensive it is to keep up compared to a Z.

Well I guess that would be one problem since it would be my DD. Not looking to drive it more than 40 miles a day though. The rotor replacement that I saw was 8k lol. I would think that it wouldn't be anywhere that close.

honestly don't know the answer to that but i do know they aren't cheap. there are some aftermarket options for less than stock but some don't provide the reliability and longevity of OEM's, while others (AP Racing J-hooks for instance) are great replacements that are, in many ways, better than the OEM's. NAGTROC is a great source of information and many guys on there will be happy to answer your questions and help you decide if the GTR is what you want. just know this, if you are truly a driver looking for a great driver's car, the GTR is one of the best vehicles i have ever driven, and that's a really long list...

That's refreshing to hear and I have no doubt that the car is as magical as I imagine it is. :-) I also figured that I would be spending money on a Z to try to "reach" the GT-R so my wife says I should just go ahead and pay the extra money for it. haha

Well my Z hasnt been too reliable. the 1990's had power going to the injectors at all times so they went out twice (all of them). So since my car was in the shop for a while the first time this happened and then knowing how expensive it was going to be each year (basicly) she wanted me to sell it.

for a dd, GTR maintanance isn't bad at all. It only starts to get expensive if you're going to start tracking it regularly. Even with occaisonally track days, not bad on the wallet at all either.
Oil changes, every 6K under normal conditions and will be about $150. Brakes, will need to change out the rotors with the pads the first time out as per Nissan (this has changed for '12, so they might not be "requiring" this anymore. Changing the rotors w/the pads is why it's around $8K OEM. Get aftermarket pads and rotors and you can drop that down to around $5-6K easily and get better performance to boot. Also, with aftermarket rotors, you'll be able to change pads w/o changing rotors next time so there's $$ saved later. Under DD conditions, your brakes will go 30-40K miles before needing new pads anyway so it's a ways off. Transmission service, every 18K under normal conditons, need to replace trans fluid, this is going to run $1500 to $2K depending on if you bring your own fluid (find a deal on the internet etc) or just show up and have the dealership do it. Tires, will last about 15K miles or so if you're nice to them. they're almost $400 per tire (tire rack prices). They're runflats, which means, if you get a puncture, you'll be hard pressed to find a place to patch them (liability issues) and since you're awd, you'll need to replace in sets of two (fronts or rears) if you've got any significant mileage on them since the difference in aspect rations will screw up your vdc/awd system. It's a reasonable car to maintain when you think about what you're getting for the $$. If you don't track it though, you're really missing out on what the car was built for and you're just better off getting a nice G37 as a dd. |

I think a GT-R makes a good DD if you are not putting 100 miles on it daily.
I drive around 30-40 tops daily and would consider a GT-R for daily use. The up keep fees are a bit high, but you do not have to go with OEM products on everything. I would go to a GT-R certified dealer to have the work done, but would pick my own products to use if I felt something was better. |
After doing research, it seems around 3-4k a year in costs if its a DD without track use. Ugh, something tells me I should get a Z and TT it myself.

By the looks of his driving per year he will need a couple oil changes a year and probably new tires every year. Balance out the other expenses equally after the first year (since many are not until after 15k) he will be in the 3-4k range, with an initial year of probably under 2k.

Honestly for a DD it would be perfect in my eyes and this is from the responses of our own GT-R customers. They have not found any problems daily driving theirs and they love it. One of them is even moderately modded. For rotors Fontana Nissan had improved on the front rotor design with their own rotors which work well when pushed hard, If you plan on tracking the car once in a while.

Long Term Update 5: 2010 Nissan GT-R - Motor Trend this is what motortrend says about it longterm as a DD. At the bottom it break down what they spend money on.

if your concerned about upkeep....you should buy mine.. all fluids recently changed , new front tires and a set of new OEM brake pads yet to be installed as the current pads are 40-50% :) its got 14K miles on it and wont need a dollar put into it until 20K
by the way real world maintenance isnt expensive on this car ..... just need to be well informed about buying the fluids online and some tricks about not letting yourself get taken advantage of at the dealer... for example most of the labor in fluid changes are in the removal and re instalation of the under trays.. but once a year they take them off for free for an inspection so just schedule your big fluid changes then... and in between... there is a trick to changing the oil without even removing the under tray.. so $35 of mobil 1 at walmart and maybe $50 to the tech and your good.. only thing you cant get around it tires... fronts last a little over 7K before they cord on average... rears maybe 12-15K... but just buy new fronts when needed and replace a axel at a time.. cuts your upfront tire cost in half... so again if your smart and read NAGTROC you will save money and enjoy the car more i barely pay 1500 a year in upkeep... and brakes arnt a big deal wither +1 on what FLmotion said and on top of that we have guys selling new take off OEM rotors and pads all the time... so when the time comes you have the option to buy a set of those for a lot cheaper or go with some AP slotted or jhooks for maybe $2500 or some.... and that shouldnt be necessary unless your track it... the OEM rotors unless they crack can usually hold up for a 2nd set of pads... and thats roughly $500 aftermarket.... |

The big $$ is the tires, and frankly, it's worth it to spend the money there and keep the runflats since no other tire, not even R comps, have proven to outperform the OEM Dunlops on the track. You should just buy MC's GTR so he can change his sig to Drives: '12 GTR. |
Trust me, I wish I could buy one right now. Unfortunately I am still in school but graduate in May. Then its 4 months to pay off wife's student loans, another 4 months for down payment, and the BAM, new car haha.
