Will 2021 be The Year of the Z?

The wait for a new Nissan Z sports car is almost over. As we approach the arrival of a replacement for the long-in-the-tooth 370Z—finally!—the rumor mill is running at full capacity, giving us some exciting tidbits about the new two-seater's powertrains, platform, and design. Here is what we expect from the new Z.

Twin-Turbo V-6 Power

The most powerful engine currently in Nissan and Infiniti's mainstream lineup (apart from the GT-R) is the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 that makes up to 400 horsepower in the Infiniti Q50 and Q60. This is the logical choice for the new Z, then, and sources within Nissan dealerships told Autoblog that this powerful mill will indeed be under the hood. A seven-speed automatic is the only transmission choice for this engine in the Infinitis, but we're hoping and praying that a stick shift will be offered as well; remember, Nissan did hint that this was possible by bolting up a six-speed manual to this engine for its modified 370Z concept for the SEMA tuner show this past year.

This engine's displacement calls into question what the new Z will be called. 300Z would be rational (or 300ZX, for nostalgia's sake), but we'd guess that Nissan will instead choose a number corresponding to the car's output rather than its displacement, like 400Z, to clarify its superiority over its predecessors.

Rear-Wheel Drive, as God Intended

A front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout is the only real way to set up a proper sports car, and the Z will continue on with a newer version of Nissan's FM platform and share many components with the Infiniti Q60 coupe. That's from an earlier report from Autocar, which also said that the new car is code-named Z35.

Lol Carpenter, saving that!

In all seriousness, my hopes are pretty low for the z35. Nissan has been underwhelming to me in the past few years. I just hope the bamboozling between the concept car they'll eventually show and the actual one that we'll see on the roads. Interested to see pricing where they'll go relative to power.

Nissan is in serious trouble and dumping millions into R&D on a car that sells 2-3k units a year would just be foolish. I believe the future of the Z depends on if they can dig themselves out of the massive hole they are in and that is going to take years

I heard Renault is designing the new Z :ugh:

Nothing wrong with that. Renault designed and built the Alpine A110. If any of that found itself in the new Z, I’d be happy!

It's a Renault build without any input from Alpine ;)

Nissan is suppose to release something like 12 new models in the next few years. Maybe the Z will be one of them.

UNKNOWN_370 01-23-2020 07:53 AM

I hope that's not the Z. That looks like an 86 with a traditional hatch. That would be a total fail. Speaking of which. Lots of youtube videos are popping up discussing why Niss as n is shyt.

Lastly, this is the other vehicles section. This should be in the Z forum.

It's a form of Z news. Not all people who are Z enthusiasts come to the other vehicles....

Take your geritol cranky.

cossie1600 01-23-2020 03:21 PM

That thread should be in here. This isn't fairlady.com. The Z35 discussion is "other vehicle" discussion.

JFC how many Z35 threads do we need around here?

Hopefully Nissan/Infiniti will realize that it is in their best interest to continue producing and selling the Nissan 370Z models. Unless Nissan/Infiniti decides to come out with the new Z35 model if you think about Nissan/Infiniti needs the 370Z model and GTR model to be popular in the current vehicle market today. What’s sad is thanks to the average consumer hybrid and electric vehicles are the wave of the future unfortunately. People are tired of gasoline and oil I would say. Being a Nissan owner I will hope that Nissan/Infiniti situation will improve in the coming future. Also it would be nice to see Nissan/Infiniti come out with the new Z35 as well as another sports car model.

Hate to piss on everyone's parade but once we all get through this economic shutdown period due to the pandemic, all automobile manufacturers will have suffered immense losses. A lot may not pull through. I can guarantee you one thing, sports cars will be last on Nissan's list in a post pandemic era, if they survive.

I'm going to take the other tack. Global inventories have been at record stupid high levels for a while. While (some) sales are still taking place, most manufacturing is going to be shuttered for quite some time. It will have the effect of dropping inventories at the back end of this (whenever that may be), as production will likely lag recovery.

So, it depends on whether they are paying their employees for the down time. That will vary by company, country, etc.

Not that I'm advocating that this pandemic is in any way a good thing. But it might be more survivable for manufacturers than for instance the service industry. Back-of-the-envelope guess only - no actual data was harmed in the making of this opinion.

2021 Z is out, it will be the same exact car as a 2020 or the same one they came out with in 2009
