RX-7 revival

So i read that they are going to get rid of the rx8 (about time) and reviving the rx7. Hopefully in 2012. What do you guys think of mazda bringing back the rx7?

MightyBobo 01-13-2010 06:36 AM

Hope it has a better motor than the current rotary pile o' poop.

I would say. I owned an RX8 and it was an ok for getting around but terrible on gas. Of course all the power was between 7k-9k rpms but when the engine got that high it felt like the car was going to shake apart.

That seems ironic considering they advertise the rotary as being so smooth...

It is very smooth, but it does have some vibration in the upper range. I would not say it feels like it will shake apart however; at least mine does not...

MightyBobo 01-13-2010 07:53 AM

Just blame it on Apex seals...right? :)

What seems ironic is you stating it isn't! The rotary is incredibly smooth, at least mine was, right up to redline. (But mine was an RX3) Maybe you had an issue! I mean, 3 moving parts, Bobo!

Wait, wut?

Im just saying it based off of the 2 owners who reported them getting a bit shakey twords redline lol...I never owned a rotary, nor would I want to 8P

I don't think it will be anything special. Who knows, it's early, but the blogs say it may not be anything better then the current set up. Which to me is under powered. I guess time will tell.

vipor 01-13-2010 11:23 AM

the rx3 was from the 70s. can't really compare the two.

kenchan 01-13-2010 01:32 PM

are they also going to put that stupid huge grin like they did on their mazda3's?

:D <= this face...

tvfreakazoid 01-16-2010 01:58 AM

Well I guess we're just going to have to wait.

I was never a big fan of the rx8. Underpowered and the gas mileage sucked big time for the little hp's it had. I've read that it's going to be based on a new rotary engine. Hopefully it will be a lot better than the rx8.

TXSpeedDemon 01-16-2010 05:09 PM

Too classic a platform not to bring back. I for one can't wait to see it become a reality. Always wanted and FD.

Lug 01-16-2010 07:31 PM

Had a 79 RX7, smoothest engine I've ever owned, by far. Surprised to hear the RX8's isn't because as mentioned above, only 3 moving parts. I only test drove one once and didn't really rap it out. Was pretty gutless down low but the handling felt great.

SMJane_Again 01-18-2010 08:37 PM

Good balance, low weight, that's what stood out to me when I drove the RX-8. The -7 has to come with more power than the -8 to make it even sort of relevant in today's sportscar segment. 10:1 lbs/hp has to be the target to keep it up there with the Z and '11 Mustang GT.
