Toyota FT-86 to come in affordable competition model

Both Toyota and Honda are planning to go racing with their new sports cars, the FT-86 and the CR-Z respectively.

While the showroom version of the FT-86 is expected to cost over $27,000 in full spec (that's a touch over L16K, but expect that price to be considerably higher for UK cars), one source close to Toyota told us that a special low-frills competition version will sell for less than $22,000 and be specially set up for racing with stiffer suspension and beefier brakes. The same model will be used for drifting competitions. Article from: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=226
Hoping Nissan comes out guns blazing with their own small RWD sports coupe. 240sx reincarnation anyone?

theDreamer 12-22-2009 10:36 AM

240sx revival has been talked about and might just happen. Report: Nissan yet again considering return of 240SX
My question though is, will the "racing spec" be worth 22,000? Also, 27,000 for the full spec model is a bit much for a 4 cylinder RWD car. I almost would say I would buy a gen coupe before the FT-86.

:iagree: You can get a 306hp Gen coupe for the same price as the toyota with the est. 200hp. Just doesn't make sense. Then again Toyota has been raising their prices compared to the competition for a few years now. I guess they figure since they are on top in terms of name brand they can ask for more money.

almost say? i think at this point i would get a gen coupe over a $27k four banger. toyota sounds like they're just making a play for more money based on the car's popular heritage.

Wait for the subie rendition... it will be good

Do I perceive certain angles similar to a Z's---especially the front??!!

phelan 12-22-2009 01:19 PM

Not really, but they are both very aggressive in design.

If the competition version really is set up for track work and all you need to do is change tires, it will be a very good deal.

Are you thinking s2000 replacement?
Light, quick, pretty good balance from factory.

the article says that it will be more exciting than a supra :ugh2: I mean it looks cool and all but IMO 2JZ-GTE > subie 4 banger. I mean if toyota added an optional TT V-6 that would be aweasome.... :excited: OT but I would like to see toyota revive the supra and price it close to the GT-R.... maybe an aluminum flat 6?

tvfreakazoid 01-13-2010 05:38 AM

hopefully they will offer a v6 option that will compete with other 300hp cars like the 370. The design is cool and the boxer engine will sound nice for a 4banger but it needs a 3+liter and v6 as a option.

Sweet ride! PLUS legendary Toyota reliability, tough competition for the Z!

Minus decent power = NOT tough competition for the Z.

Still a nice concept though.

yah, that's competition for the genesis coupe and maybe some of the lower-end mustangs..
