Self Service Garage or DYI

Hey all,

I just wanted to get some input and see if anyone could point me in the right direction.

I am planning on installing the oil-cooler in a near future (already ordered the parts). So I was wondering if anyone knew of a place where I could do it at?

I live in apartments... and the lease says "cant change oil" on the property, so I was wondering if anyone knew of any place in the bay?

Thanks in advance! Hope everyone is having a good week!

you know, ive heard about tons of garages like this that exist in other states/countries that charge by the hour, but ive never heard of anything like this in the bay area.

or in California in general...I've been on the hunt for something like this down here for a while. If I had the money to invest I'd probably open one up myself...I'm actually wondering if there's a legal reason there isn't one but that doesn't make much sense.

dont steal my business idea! :gtfo2: :icon18:

but on the real..i was thinking about it too. the only issue is you'd need a HUGE insurance policy. waivers and what not can only go so far. you'd need a pretty large initial investment as well. garage space, tools, lifts, and a customer base.

LOL, I've been seriously thinking about this since I bought the Z a couple of years ago...yeah, I don't know how liable you could be for some guy making a mistake and dropping his car on his head...I'm guessing PRETTY liable in California or someone would've had it, it's not like the idea's not out there...I know mechanics here are always scared of customers getting too close to their lifts and garages because their insurance policy only covers them and employees so at a DIY place EVERYONE would be a customer so yeah, insurance should be through the roof. Wouldn't a simple waiver stating "we're not liable for anything at all ever" solve that problem though?

Haha here's an idea... everyone pitch in and open up a place for Z owners only.

I bet if you were to sit down with a lawyer and map everything out and then if you were to "screen" individuals and their cars before hand, that might cover the CYA area of the business.

If you live near a military base and know someone stationed there, they usually have one if that helps any.

Agree! All bases I've ever been stationed at have fully equipped bays fully stocked so joe can work on his own vehicle they usually have a licensed mech on staff to assist with work

Oh, you're just right around the corner from ZCARGARAGE. Should take it there to have them install your parts.

Yea that's what I think I'm gonna have to do. I just hope they wont try to charge too much for it.

Thanks all of your input! Lets try to do a meet/do a drive one of these weekends.

Years ago say in the 1980's, there was a small franchise in NY that were opening these places with say 5 or 8 bays to rent by the hour (not cheap either). They would also rent those 1 time use tools as well.

I then heard that people were getting injured and the insurance was just going through the roof. Have not seen anything like that since, except if you know a local shop willing to rent an empty bay for a short period. Overall just too dangerous for the general DIY maniac guy!!

A good reason to have real friends with a garage and tools and not just Facebook and internets friends.
