Legal California Modifications?

Hello,

I recently got my Z (Black 2013 Touring Sport) and I was wondering what are some California legal modifications I can make?

So far I have purchased a Stillen Gen 3 CAI and a fast intentions CBE, and I'm aware that any changes to the cats/headers are illegal here. In the future (maybe far) I might think about a Stillen SC since that's CARB legal.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Your exhaust isn't legal

I think even the CAÍ isn't legal either. Sucks we have all these restrictions unlike the rest of the country but at the same time it's good thing for your health. Just go to TJ across the border and you'll be glad California has so many emission restrictions. That place smells nasty of burnt gasoline everywhere you go

Stillen Gen 3 is CARB legal, it has an EO #

RumbleFish 02-14-2017 01:49 PM

I have the Stillen CAI & FI CBE, no problem passing smog test.
The Stillen CAI is indeed CARB legal

How'd you get by on the FI Exhaust?

Did you have an understanding with the test place?

I want to grab one and slap on the FI HFC i have lying around but am waiting till next year when I smog test, then i don't have to swap for a while

You are wrong. Nothing behind the catalytic converter matters in terms of emissions. Sound maybe, but not emissions...

You are wrong also. The Gen III from Stillen is CARB approved.

Thanks, I was getting a little worried because some places had said that CBE is legal because it doesn't change the cats themselves. I have the 18" resonated so maybe that'll help with the sound

well the HFC definitely isn't going to be legal, but I don't think catback is illegal since it doesn't change emissions from my understanding, and it's below the decibel limit

The HFC's would be the problem, not the CBE

You could find a place that would let you slide on the cats but, that's on you.

I have my oem cats still.

OptionZero 02-14-2017 04:37 PM

I've gotten by once with an aftermarket cat-back, but failed another time on visual exam, thats why i asked.

guess you just gotta find a cooler place

Properly tuned i am certain that the Gen 3, HFC, and TDX would pass a sniffer, its just getting an overly strict tester that i'm worried about

B&W_Evader 02-15-2017 09:19 AM

On Cat-Back Exh... I saw somewhere that if stock has a crossover pipe, your aftermarket needs one too. I don't think there is a distinction between X and H configuration. Noise restrictions too but it you have a stock cat you will probably never get "hassled by the man" for it.

CAI... I think any mods are OK in front of the MAF sensor.

No alternate cats where listed last time I checked.

Pretty much all of Stillen stuff and then Nismo Catbacks are 100% safe picks. I know a local dealer that orders and installs both, and I'd assume many do in the state.

CBE, once you clear sniffer and noise testing, still depends on the tester. Some will be uptight and actually look into CARB regulation, though from the sound of things, that's pretty rare. Like you must've picked the worst spot to get tested in that situation.

i passed smog w 300 cell BERK HFC

angels3k 02-21-2017 03:15 AM

Two years ago I passed smog with FI straight pipe CBE but had to take my injen intakes off since had no CARB sticker. I would of passed this year with this set up since I received CARB certifications for my Injen intake. Keeping my fingers crossed for this year since I'm stillen charged. Gotta love the CARB sticker tho.

Stickers are so easy to make. Many shops will do it without checking anyway. Only boy scout owners will actually check.

i just moved to san francisco and im about to ship my car here from houston. I have test pipes so its not legal there either but all they do is plug into the obd2 and get readings - i have all my readings cleared so they cant pick any of that up and it passes. I heard they only do sniffer if its older than 2000? they do other stuff here other than plugging into the obd port?

There is a visual test for smog
