How Long would it take?

Ok so my temp plates expire on the 13th of this month....If i went on the 11th with my registration and title ect. to the DMV when would they give me my plates. I got my car in delaware and they gave me two months of temp plates and thats gonna end. so if i went tmr to give in my stuff would they give me plates that day or would i need to wait?. Also when i register my car do i have to do emissions that day as well how does that work? First car i bought so yea...confused

I don't know about NJ, but where I live the DMV doesn't handle this stuff. That's the tag office (same slow bureaucracy). You have to do emissions, make sure your car is registered on your insurance policy, pay your state taxes/fees, then yes, if you don't want a vanity plate, you will get a plate that day. If you want a vanity plate, they will give you another temp until it's ready.

I went in after doing emissions but had some insurance problems. USAA insures a new car for 30 days until you get it officially registered. I was well within the 30 days, but the tag office said the car must be registered officially on the policy first. So we called USAA right there and they faxed proof of insurance. I paid the fees and was given a temp tag (vanity plate). Next time don't wait until last minute because there could be problems and your car will no longer be legal to drive. Though this didn't stop me when I bought my car in Alabama and put a friends dealer plate on it. The law ain't getting in the way of my Z and I sure as hell ain't gettin it shipped!

DMV in CA has changed a bit over the years. Now it is slower.

Once upon a time I bought used cars and got my new plates handed to me that day.

Buying a new car, the plates just arrive in the mail after six to eight weeks or so.

I'd do nothing until they arrived in the mail and stick with paper plates.

I bought mine in NY but I had the dealership deal with the NJ MVC and picked up my plates about a week later. I am sure it would have gone faster if I had done it myself and in person. But for a state mandated max documentation fee of $75 for all dealer paper work in NY why waste my time. =)

In Minnesota a lot of dealers hand you the plates when you buy the car. I know...doesn't help you but I haven't hijacked a thread in a week or two. :p

You would need the title to get a registration. If you financed, they should be doing that for you. If you paid cash and they gave you the title, you can do it!
