New Mass vehicle inspection system
 

Is anyone with aftermarket parts concerned about passing now that this new system is in place? From an article:

"According to the RMV, service stations are using cameras to take still photographs of five things: the vehicle VIN number, vehicle odometer, vehicle front license plate, vehicle back license plate and of the staff member doing the inspection at the service station."

I just have an exhaust, but non-resonated so its pretty loud. I've never failed in the past but now I'm a bit concerned that since the inspectors are essentially being audited as they perform work, they may be more by the book. Thoughts?

Good question. I have questions as well. Bump for any others by now with the new system.

They are probably doing this to protect their mechanics. Alot of people get their inspection done, then go home and modify their exhaust, then when pulled over claim they got it inspected this way. Just helps with accountability. If you break the law by modifying your exhaust, you should man up when caught and don't use the garage as a scapegoat.

Could also be trying to cut down on those paying for an illegal sticker to pass inspection.

Taking pictures of those 5 things is fine.

It will most likely come down to the person doing the passes, because everybody is a little different.
And then even IF you go and change it in your garage for scapegoats, I doubt a dude is going to pull you over, then check for illegal smog parts on the car.
The chances of someone getting pulled over and having the photos match with the way the pulled over vehicle is... theres plenty of other excuses! Like sir I just got this new upgrade X amount of time ago.
I doubt an officer will pull a person over the day of that they passed the smog check, then having the officer check for legal or illegal smog parts of the car lol.

Yenno what I mean? Yeah it could happen still but chances are so slim since a certain number and certain kind of events have to take place in secession!

Not meaning same day, but if you're out with an exhaust over the legal decibel limit and your car is letting off a raw fuel burn smell, it's kind of a no brainer you're asking for trouble. And it is state police I would be more worried about. They will take the time to investigate if suspected.

What I was saying was that if I get my car inspected, pictures are taken, car is passed, I bring it back home and within a week I put test pipes on it, IF I get pulled over for anything and is questioned, I can't exactly say the garage passed it that way can I? That's all.

Only other reason is to cut down on inspection fraud. We all know a guy who knows a guy that can pass it, right?

Testing Fees in California
You do not have to pass the car emission test in California every two years if your car or truck is six years or younger. However, you will have to pay a $20 smog test abatement fee for your first six years of ownership. You must undergo auto emissions testing every two years once these six years are over. The owners of the following vehicles are not eligible for smog abatement, and will need to renew their vehicles every two years as needed.

Diesel-fueled vehicles that weigh less than 14,000 pounds and were produced in 1998 or later.
Specially constructed vehicles that were produced in 1976 or later.
Vehicles owned by nonresidents.

Yay for your car if it is 6 years or under!

Technically, since my car is 2015, I don't have to get it smogged until 2022.
By that time my car will be waaaaaaay done upgrading, and I can purchase 370z in 2022, transfer all aftermarket parts into it, and it wouldn't need smog check for 6 years. After that, buy another car and do the same thing, haha that's one way to get past smog check in CA!
