No, but jokes aside with my horrible paint skills, if you can envision what I'm trying to picture here.

Good effort, but it still looks too square and chunky, more like a muscle car than a Z.

The Proto color is dreadful and definitely hides the lines. Not to mention the lighting in the livestream didn't help either. However, what also helps with that blocky front end is either getting rid of or changing the bottom lip color to black.

That red one looks about 4000% better than the lemon-lime one they used.

Agreed. Color is everything. Also hiding the bottom lip of the rectangle grille definitely makes it look better.

Don't mind my horrible paint editing, but I tried to visualize what the side air crevices could look like. Also changed a bit of the top of the front grille shape to be less square. I think something like this would look great.

I love the new Z! I think they did an amazing job considering the limitations they are under. This is a refresh of the 370Z and not a whole new car. The budget for this refresh was around $240 million from what I've heard. A whole new chassis would cost over a billion. I even like the refreshed 370Z interior. Everything is in the same spots as before. The turbo impeller speed gauge is very cool. The turbos can get up to 240,000 rpm which is mind-blowing. I even like the rectangular grill. Stark and modern. This is how you do a modern take of beloved models from the past. As a current 370Z 6MT owner and former 300ZX 5MT owner, I am extremely pleased with what they have done. It's a miracle they are going to make this car at all.

tvfreakazoid 09-16-2020 01:45 AM

Well now we need to know the numbers, how well it will perform and how well it's like being tuned.

I've always been a Toyota supra fan. But this Z is by far the better looking car.

Although I'm not sure about the rectangular shaped front grill

I'll be in my bunk!

theART 09-16-2020 02:14 AM

The good:

- Almost all angles but front end looks amazing, rear, sides, roof, inside, love it.
- Side view, looks like a very balanced car, with roofline, wheels front nose, mid and back very proportionate.

https://cnet3.cbsistatic.com/img/04U...to-400z-13.jpg

The bad:

1. Bumper should go, its ugly, looks like a mix of 350z and the OG 370z bumper, this should be an easy fix for the production model.
2. Headlights are very cute:icon14:. Strange thing they look great from side but look bug eyed from the front. Headlights should be much more aggressive.

https://cnet2.cbsistatic.com/img/4ek...oto-400z-7.jpg

Overall the car is great, and support Nissan all the way for being brave and releasing it.

PS: Just checked with my GF, she said new Z front end looks like a yellow sleepy bug, and she likes the 370z way more!:owned:

Well no "Wow" factor at all. Will just have to wait until it shows up on the showroom floor. :ugh2:

chubbs 09-16-2020 05:17 AM

Just woken up from a VERY late night here in the UK (God, that presentation was bad, even with Tony Stark Ironman hosting it). And who was that annoying, self-promoting nob at Z-con?

At 3am, towards the end of the 'event' I got the devastating news that Nissan have said they won't be selling it in Europe.

This (via autocar.co.uk: However, there’s bad news for the UK and mainland Europe: the as-yet-unnamed new model won’t be offered for sale here. In a statement sent to Autocar, Nissan cited a “shrinking European sports car market and specific regulations on emissions” as the reasons why it was “unable to build a viable business case” for the car’s European release. )

So, having fallen asleep in a really miserable frame of mind, I've woken up to realise that the value of my 370z just increased, thanks to that fairly crap news :)

The new Z is not so much better than the 370 - I can spend my money on my current car instead - happy days!

chubbs 09-16-2020 05:38 AM

When the car's designer got to the front bumper area he looked at the clock, said, "Oh my God, is that the time?" - and went to bed.

Shame he forgot to finish it.

I personally think it's ugly, and makes me appreciate my 370Z that much more. This proto just doesn't flow and looks forced, for lack of better words. Despite having years to prepare, it seems as if the proto was put together half-@$$ed and at the last minute. I do like the wheels though. The front reminds me of a variation of an s2k, and the proportions just don't seem right between the front and the back when looking from the side (too long of a nose and too short of an @$$). Car doesn't look aggressive and looks like it's smiling (picture teeth where the grill is).

Carlos Ghosn is probably laughing his @$$ off right now looking at this concept.

What about Randy Rodriquez ( from Tesla now work with GM designing Buicks and Cadillac) who pen the design of the 370Z ...I bet you he is having abdominal craps laughing about this design.

Please don't get offended its from a catfish front design ( which I like looks aggressive) to a front looking Tadpole with mouth open wide.

Anyone remember the 370Z 2018-2019 Heritage Edition? Remember the yellow and black interior in that? Now we know the real reason behind it. It was done as a test bed to test and gauge consumer reaction for this new Z's black and yellow interior.

Have you ever seen a 240z, 260z, or 280z back end? That is what it is. Not some stupid Mustang piece of crap.

FPenvy 09-16-2020 08:05 AM

i am honestly at a loss currently

i like pieces, i hate pieces, and in the end i'm just utterly disappointed in the laziness of nissan.

looks like a sloppy and quickly done proto over a 370 that they threw together last week.

interior is legit 90% 370z minus the 2 new displays like cmon.

the only way i can excuse the heavy reusing of 370 parts is if it comes out very very very soon and for a very low price. because nothing in this car is "new". it's all from the parts bin that they have lying around and that is what hurts the most over that fuckin awful front bumper.

Ghostvette 09-16-2020 08:16 AM

I was initially :excited::excited: but as they droned on and on about 'design cues' and fielding questions from idiots, I was more :icon14::icon14::icon14:

Like everyone else, there are parts I liked and parts I'm not too sure about. My fiancee says it looks like the 370z..

I'm going to wait until I can see, touch and drive one before I make a decision. I'm hoping Amuse & some of the other JDM aftermarket folks come up with a cool front bumper. :tiphat:

The rear on those cars was more squared off and honestly would have flowed with the front bumper better. The new Z has a more curved rear and I get more mustang GT vibes from it than I do Nissan 240, 260, 280z vibes. But that's just my opinion.

axmea? 09-16-2020 09:36 AM

I'm done being critical with the design elements and how it was presented. We could all criticize and pick out the negatives but what about the things that looks promising? That TT with a 6 spd will be fun. Get it tuned and it'll be more than enough for many. I see a lot of JDM design houses drawing their kit for aftermarket. That part is exciting. The seats look good to me.. Nismo trim has potential to be distinct and unique. This is if they even do it.

Yea, like installing that steering wheel on a 370. Or the 6/4 brake calipers.

xfrgtr 09-16-2020 10:26 AM

Ugly.

SOUTHZZ 09-16-2020 10:44 AM

I may be like many. About a year or so ago, there were thoughts/reports of a totally new Z.
Clean piece of paper, start over.Offer innovations on a lighter car at a competitive price.
This was not what happened.
The 400Z as described is pretty much a "parts box "vehicle.Financially, why not?
Others do this.I am not at all surprised.
Does not look bad.Pays homage to the 240Z for sure. Design touches from other Z
lineage abound.I do hate the yellow color of the proto. But,hey how many times has a "car show" color been used on a new model kick off...
Bottom line,not much new here.
The challenge IMO will be,will the old Z guys go for it? How many new buyers will this attract that are not over the moon for a manual, rear wheel drive with classic Z touches like or 3 gauge top-of-the-dash?
And,the price. Reports say 40k + to 50k.
What is gonna be the marketing focus?
Trend now seems to be HP.
Take Dodge. The message is HEMI/Hellcat. Does anyone mention what the car looks like or features other than the HP?
Another challenge,we now live in CBC world.
COVID Buy Car. How will one walk into a dealership to check out a 400Z and get a test drive?
Much competition out there.Gonna be a tough sell.

Makes financial sense to me to keep what we have or for a newcomer, buy a clean used
and make it your own.

tacid blue 09-16-2020 11:03 AM

I am interested. Mid 50s guy with a 2017 370z with only about 30k on it, and I will be I in the showroom as soon as it shows up. My first car was a 240z, and this looks "close enough" if everything works as it should. Given Nissans resources, I think this is pretty good, and keeps the Zcar DNA - unlike what Toyota did with the Supra

ifew552 09-16-2020 11:25 AM

I love it. About 20 years ago, not too long after I graduated from college, I scraped every cent I got to put a deposit down on '02 350, six months before the release. Ended up putting 100k on that car and got alot of pungtang because of the car.

Now that I am a middle aged man, I can't wait to get back in. I'm already getting that tingling feeling lmao

Where r u feeling the tingle now? Hahah

ZoomZ 09-16-2020 11:54 AM

I don't think Nissan is done. In a way, I think this was done intentionally. ( the Yellow, front grill and rear) Almost as if they are still keeping it underwraps.

Just too much left out for anyone to make a final conclusion. I hope I'm right.......for Nissan and the Z's sake! ( that's sake as in "for F**ck sake" not the delicious Rice wine. ;) )

zz

RanRich 09-16-2020 11:56 AM

This is going to be Nissan's Supra. Built at a cost based off an existing platform because they needed a new namesake sports car. Luxury platform as a base will result in a not-quite-GT-not-quite-Sports experience, also concerned about weight given the Q60's specs.

Interior looks like a 370Z playing dress-up, which isn't ideal given the interior is dated as-is.

Exterior-wise, ANY other color would've been nice, also don't understand the tire lettering. Obviously the grill is a huge miss, and I believe the headlights would look better if they could shape up that front bumper a bit better. From the belt line up all I see is 370Z, just with stupid chrome strips at the roofline.

Rumor is this is 98% production spec, so let's hope that 2 is a new grill.

Hoping for better looking mirrors.
It's not the mirrors themselves for me. Its the way the hood comes into the mirrors too high and then just stops, like it got cut off. Painting the mirrors, A-pillar and roof could fix this easy. I hope having the black floating roof is a paint option and not the only way it comes. It looks stupid on the new Toyota Camry and it doesn't look good here either.
Quote:

I dunno how I feel about the headlights.
I love the ones on my 370Z. These new ones are almost a step backwards and are just too plain Jane. Not sure if it's the shape of the size, but they aren't doing it for me.

Quote:

Can't wait to test drive!!!
I can wait. There is NOTHING about this Z Proto that would even interest me in the slightest to switch cars. The 370Z is way Way WAY better looking.

Bottom Line
The reveal was pathetic. Those guys are friggin' dorks. Completely unprofessional. The questions they took were some of the dumbest questions I've ever heard. And the answers weren't much better. Overall a very painful experience.

The car is simply a reworked 370, and it shows. As people have said, it looks forced. Reminds me of when GM took the Pontiac Solstice (my wife's car) and designed it to the Saturn Sky. The Sky was totally forced and contrived in comparison. It had to bolt around what they already had underneath. Same goes here, and it shows.

The front grill shape is horrible, and the grill itself is hideous. It's a bunch of Nissan Cube window shapes all lumped together. Very juvenile.

I don't like the hood at all either. They tried to make the car look longer up front by flattening and extending it forward more before the drop. It has a similar appearance to what Mercedes did years back when they did the shark F1 sort of nose. But the Mercedes was much better.

WTF are those stupid "fake" slits at the front corners? No holes, no lights, no nothing. A completely useless design exercise. Reminds me of the rear wheel fake vents on the Camaro but worse.

I don't like the side Z badge on the back C-pillar because it's better where it is on the 370Z.

As I already said, I hate the way the hood line goes into the side mirrors.

The window and roof lines are 370Z all the way - no change.

The Katana Sword thing is such a childish gimmick. Just a way to "try" to distract people that the line is the exact same as on the 370Z.

The rear hips are okay, but I like the 370Z bulges better.

The back end is almost too smooth, to the point of being completely boring. The only thing to like is how fast it cuts off. A nice short tight rump.

Overall, no dice for me. There is no way I would swap this with my 370Z, even for better performance. I don't even think it's good looking enough to buy even if I didn't already have a Z.

The only thing I can say positive right now, is that this is a Proto, so some things could change (especially that fugly front). And, as we all know, cars almost always look better in real life than in pictures or videos. So, like the new Corvette C8, I will reserve final judgment until I get to see it, sit in it, and drive it.

Until then, just more evidence why Nissan is sinking in quick sand. They lack real deal decisive direction.

viiv 09-16-2020 01:41 PM

Here is a piece of technology the new Z will have even though it wasn't mentioned. Automatic emergency braking. It will be mandatory on all new cars from 2022 in most countries including Canada following a United Nations resolution.

Also the Japanese models will be getting auto on headlights that can't be disabled. In Japan, from 2022, all cars have to be in the 'auto' mode for their headlights all the time.

NISMO IX 09-16-2020 02:22 PM

Seems overall positive in here, but a few very SALTY posts, wow, way to kill a mood....

Tough critics here! Remember people it is still a prototype and can change from the final version! Just be thankful they are giving you a new "Z" and not scrapping the whole "Z" line all together given the current economic state that Nissan is in and the difficult sales of the "sports car" in general, I am surprised that Nissan is even going thru with plans for a new "Z"
AND they kept the manual transmission! What more do you want?
