Dealership oil change ?
 

I've been to two dealerships for oil changes. The service technicians always ask what type of oil I want. I tell him I want the recommended oil or better. I happen to know that Mobil 1 oil is only partially synthetic. They do make a full synthetic that cost much more. Anyhow, I ask them about the Nissan Ester oil that is recommended. They cannot tell me the difference between ester and synthetic. I usually just tell them to use the Nissan Ester oil.

The other day I get a call from one of the dealerships asking me about my recent service. I tell them everything is fine but someone should clear up the oil situation with the service department.

Today I get a call from Nissan. They apologize for the confusion and say they are going to send out a training update to the service department. The guy informs me he knows a lot about oil blends and can answer my question.

"Tell me the difference between the Nissan recommended Ester oil and synthetics. " This is his response surmised.

Nissan Ester oil is a formulation that is like the esters used in ac compressors. They are recommended for use in the new Maxima, Z cars and GTR. Basically the Ester oil maintains a consistent viscosity at a range of temperatures and high pressures like Nissan's high performance engines produce.

The Mobil Full Synthetic is recommended in these engines as well. The Mobil full Synthetic contains the same Esters blends as the Nissan Ester oil.

"Which is the best oil for my car?" He says, " The Mobil Full Synthetic is the best oil for the high performance vehicles at this time."

I read every oil thread on this site and other forums and never seen anything definitive. I've even had trouble getting answers from Nissan service centers. This is the first time anyone from Nissan has addressed the issue.

By posting it on the internet, you are asking for comments. Thats what happens on forums. Lame insults? That's pretty gentle compared to what happens when people post yet another oil thread around here. Thats usually asking for trouble from the mods. Read every oil thread? I somehow doubt that.

I gave you fair warning by putting "oil" in the title.
You may choose to ignore the thread if you don't wish to hear about oil issues.

I've been using Mobil 1 5-30 since it came out. I have no reason to waste 5 minutes looking into what's the best oil. It's much better than standard dealer oil. That's more than enough for my priceless Ferrari :icon17:

i run royal purple 5w30. I have since 09. also use it in my subi's. **** having the dealership change it, i dont trust them as far as i can throw them. for all i know i could hand them 6quarts of RP I BOUGHT and they would put autozone generic brand in it and keep my oil. ive heard enough "joy ride" stories to know not to trust those punks with my car unless its something i simply cannot fix. if you want an answer, get Z Speed Performance Aluminum Undershroud and change the oil yourself like i do, it has an easy access door that makes life easy. And its not made of cheap chinese garbage plastic.

This wasn't about what is the best oil. Everyone has their own opinion. This is more about Nissan's oil recommendation. Two completely different things.

Basically they are now recommending Mobil Full Synthetic over their own Nissan Ester oil as stated in the service manual.

I think any oil that meets the API standard is sufficient to protect your engine for normal driving. Just change the oil and the filter every 3,000 mi and you'll be fine.

Unless that was a call from an engineer of that motor. His input is worthless.
If you out regular oil in your car and change it within 3750 miles, they can't void your warranty, so that means it's "good enough" and most, if not all meet API specs

Damn it!!!! I just got my first oil change at 3765. Does this mean my warranty is now void?!

Slow day today, so I swung by the local Nissan dealer to get the oil changed on my 2014 Z with 4100 miles. They recommended Mobil 1 full synthetic, which I was OK with. Oil, filter and "multi-point inspection", whatever that is, cost me $75 and took about 45 minutes as a walk-in. I didn't buy my Z from them. Prior to this, I've always had my oil changed at the local Chevy dealer by my son, who's a GM Certified Service Tech, but he left that job for the oil fields of North Dakota.

I was OK with the whole process.

$60 for full synthetic at Infiniti dealership that can fit my lowered Z perfectly. Easier for me because their service department is top notch in Massapequa

Yeah, I went in a little skeptical. I didn't buy this Z from them, but I bought my last one there, as well as several previous other Nissans and I've dealt with this dealer's service department before. The sales manager recognized me on my way in to Service, was curious about where this new Z came from and why I didn't shop it with them. Sheesh, I thought no one would ever ask, and I confess I kind of enjoyed telling him.

as long as the salesguy isnt all pissy and butthurt like the salesman who sold me my previous infiniti, then it's all good. :tup:

the guy wasnt there the morning i went in to buy the car so i bought it from another salesman. i was at the dealership the previous weekend checking out the car and he saw me there. he didnt bother to come by to ask if i was interested. :shakes head: missed opportunity by him.

I found his post interesting, informative and helpful. I had the same questions myself and was unable to get a definitive answer, despite having done research on the subject.

The dealership I purchased my 2020 Z from uses Mobil 1 0W20 super synthetic oil as their recommended oil. I called Nissan and they told me the recommended oil is synthetic 5W30. I gave the dealership Amsoil 5W30 Signature oil to use for the oil change.

I dont think there are enough comments about which oil is best to really draw a conclusion yet. :ugh2:


However, some say using 0w20 can lead to block detonation. Again, that's just what some say.

0w20 is not the appropriate oil weight for your Nissan 370Z. Do not go back to that dealer :shakes head:

I don't let them provide oil for my oil changes, but they are the only Nissan dealer in Abilene. I also told the service manager that Nissan says 5W30 synthetic is the appropriate weight for the 370Z.

If they are stupid enough to think 0w20 goes in the Z, then they are stupid enough to screw up pretty much anything. I wouldn't let that dealer even look at the car, much less service it.

Been going to McGavock in Abilene for years (bought my Titan from them in 2010), and it was about 2 years ago that they went pure 0W20 as their only oil choice. Hasn't made a big difference to me as I've used Amsoil Signature 5W30 in the Titan since I got it...so adding a couple more gallons to my order for the 370 isn't a huge deal. Tara (the new SM) knows I always bring my own oil (and transmission/gear/etc oil) and never has an issue.

Firstly, Nissan Ester oil is NOT a synthetic oil. It is at best a synthetic blend with a very little ester oil thrown in. If I remember correctly, there is about 10% ester oil added to a dino base stock. But Nissan will not confirm or deny it.

Secondly, the only Nissan vehicle for which Ester oil is recommended is the 370z. Nothing else, not even the GTR requires it. The only reason the Nissan ester oil is recommended for the 370Z / G37 is to quiet down the valve train noise that may happen with some cars due to the engine's unique VVEL system.

Thirdly, you can use any full synthetic 5w30 engine oil with the "API certification seal". Chances are slim that you will get any valve train noise. From experience, I have found my engine is even quieter using Pennzoil Platinum Ultra 5W30 than the Nissan Ester oil. No other viscosity is recommended especially 0W20. But Nissan dealerships will often use 0W20 on all cars even the 370Z because that is all they have available.

Some may disagree with what I have stated but believe me, I researched it a very long time and discussed it with several Nissan specialists and it is the best information I came up with.
