Car wont start, fuel pump 400?!

Two Fridays ago my car gave me some issue with her not starting. Verified it wasnt the battery and did as much as I could since I was in a hurry to leave town for the weekend.

The following monday I get the car towed to a mechanic shop were its been there for a week already. Kinda pissed I found out until today what the issue was (he gave some stupid excuse saying his diagnostic guy was sick).

Anyways, he says it was the fuel pump going bad, he also said it was gonna be about $600 for parts and labor. Told me the fuel pump was $400?! Is that a legit estimate? :icon14: plus $100 a piece for labor and diagnostics. Please enlighten me with ur knowledge my fellow grease monkeys. Just kinda feel im being hustled a bit.

Hard to say...
Possible steering lock problem? I would pull the wire first and test it out.

When you move the car to "ON" without starting, you should hear the fuel priming. If you don't hear it, then a pump issue is completely false. It still doesn't eliminate the possibility of an issue related to the fuel relay or other electronics.

Walbro 255 lph pumps only cost about 100-150 dollars. Even factoring in the OE/dealer prices, 400 dollars in parts, especially if it's just the fuel pump as they say, is astronomical. You'd be better off using an aftermarket solution.

If that mechanic's shop is not the dealer, take it to a dealer. A standard mechanic at some mechanic's shop is not really the best source. Perhaps if he were a current Master Tech, then maybe.

Out of curiosity how many miles are on your car (fuel pump)? What octane are you using?

What mechanic did you take your car to? If it you don't take your car to Hills garage for any issues outside of warranty work or the dealer for warranty work, you are making a mistake A 2 Z. Hoping for a quick & cheap fix for you.
