Rear Diff Rust???
 

So im working on getting rid of the rattle between the rear cross member and my ARK Grip CBE. I started taking the cross member off when I looked back at the Rear Diff (Gearbox) assy. and noticed there was a bunch of rust and stuff building up in that area. I will put up pictures. But my question and main concern is does this fall under the rust warranty of the vehicle? I live in Washington state and it snowed quite a bit last year My nismo is a DD. What are your guys o opinions and advice to what i should do? Thanks in advance

I know I could brush the rust off and just watch it but as far as the warranty and what not that covers rust where do I stand! Its a 2010 with 15,xxx miles

Also if you look in pic 2 and 3 you see its kinda wet looking like its fluid or something? im kinda worried 1. Because i have Intakes, HFC, and CBE. 2. It snows alot here and i know the roads may have something to do with this, is the dealership going to say sorry too bad its the roads (sand/salt whatever they use here for snow)?

It is not covered by warranty, unfortunately.

Luckily, it is generally not problematic, and if it becomes problematic Nissan is pretty good about taking care of you. If you have any trouble, pm me and I'll pass over the nna rep I worked with(I had severe rust on my car and finally got them to take care of it)


From the pic though, it just looks like surface rust--no worries

I wouldn't worry to much about it unless you see an actual leak from the axles or the dif.

The rest is cosmetic and nobodies going to see it unless they're looking underneath it. But if that bothers you enough? you can paint the dif

Do the wet looking spots looks like fluid or a leak??? Thanks guys I feel a lot better now. I thought the vehicle had some kind of rust warranty? Guess not...

Since you are driving in the snow, get the undercarriage coated.

And that surface rust is nothing, I'm driving through all kinds of salted roads here lol.

Rust like that is very common on majority of the vehicles produced...be it from Nissan, Dodge, Toyota, etc.

The leak you are seeing is probably SOME diff fluid, but it doesn't take a lot to make a stain like that on the casing. Stick to you normal service intervals and you should not have any problems. Might want to mention it the next time you have it at the dealership...might get some free labor out of them.

cool thanks man! Also will painting the case void any warranty on the diff? If I have an issue later are they going to say "you painted it so you probably melted the seal with the paint or something like that? Thanks again guys

My Z28's rear end looked a lot wetter than that. Probably some very minor seepage. Check your fluid level periodically and you'll be fine.

Nah I doubt it void the warranty. If in doubt, call a local dealership and speak with the service writer or service manager.

I wouldn't worry about it. Painting the diff or the full axle assembly is a pretty common thing in the Mustang world and I have never ever heard of a dealer denying service because of it.
