SEL P0605, what is it?

So today on the way home from work I got a service engine light. At the time it happened my low fuel warning had jusst come on with ~47 miles left to go. I was turning right at aproxmately 25mph. All of the sudden I lost forward momentum, the traction control and SEL lights came on and I think SRM may have turned off. The car didn't die but didn't wan't to build RPM's either.

I pulled over, and oddly the traction control light stayed on. I turned off the car and checked for any obvious issues and didn't see any. It started up first thing and I went and got gas thinking it could have been fuel starvation.

It drove home fine although I was very easy on her. When I got home I pulled up the SEL code via the ON / Gas pedal trick. I beleive it indicated P0605. I went ahead and cleard it and have since driven about 20 miles normally without further issue.

Can anyone shed any light on what this SEL was, what triggered it and any steps / precautions I should take?

Thanks,
Matt

Matt a google search will reveal that this code is ECM/ECU related. You might try resetting it first to see what that does.

Thanks, I forgot to mention I did google it but the results I found werent specific to the 370z so I wasn't sure if it was accurate. Are SEL's standardized across brands and models?

For Nissan and many other brands this is apparently an ECU code. I'd bring it to the dealer. I've had a faulty ECU on another car. You don't what the chaos they cann cause.

Keep us posted!

Same Code last night... Slip light, VDC Off light and Check Engine light popped on and throttle cut out. Only difference is that I was at about 5/8 tank and Accelerating moderately from 65 to about 85 when it cut.
Managed to coast in Neutral to a safe spot off the road, and did a visual inspection to see if anything was leaking, or otherwise not right. Idle Exhaust note was deeper than normal, which worried me but nothing else seemed odd. after a few restarts of the car, the VDC and Slip lights turned off and I was able to drive home. Got the Code checked today and will have to take it over to the Dealership tomorrow (Don't wanna potentially make it worse)

Any word on why yours popped?

I saw this recently on a Camry, oddly enough, with same symptoms. I think it might be related to an error in the traction control logic.

Yeah, take it to the dealer. They may replace the ECU under warranty,

It never happened to me again so I didn't really worry about it. If it happens again I'll take it to the dealer. If you find anything out let me know.

hey quick question... how did you clear the service engine light

Mr Foxwolf 04-15-2011 12:51 PM

Ended up just disconnecting/reconnecting the negative terminal on the battery. Figure if it comes back, THEN I'll go to the stealership.

Before you Disconnect the battery, go through your maintenance "Bean Counters" (Oil change, tires, air filters, etc..) on the little trip computer and write the values down, as they will all reset to zero when you disconnect.

Pick-up an OBD-II code reader. Most of them also clear these SEL's, MIL's, etc.. They can be found for around $50 (US). A lot better than disconnecting the battery and resetting the ECU.

Theres also a procedure requiring a few presses of the start button and accelerator. A search of the forum should turn up something but I'm too lazy to look right now.

You can reset the ECU without touching the battery by following this procedure:

1) With the key in your pocket/car, push the Engine Start button TWICE (so the car is fully on, but not started)

2) Within three seconds of the car "ON" (again NOT started), Floor (all the way down) and Release the gas pedal fully 5 times within 5 seconds. Do not do this too fast.. 1..2..3..4..5

3) Wait 7 seconds then floor the gas pedal and hold for 10 seconds. After that 10 seconds the Check Engine Light will start to blink slowly.

4) Release the pedal and floor it down once again and hold for 10 seconds. After these 10 seconds the check engine light will disappear then begin to flash much more rapidly. After you have done the following turn the car off and then back on. The ECU is now reset!!

^^ this method works great if you dont want to lose presets and maint info. +1 for Christian, I've done this twice.

It does take a few attempts to get it down tho

Is there a way to fetch the codes without an OBDII reader?

MY SEL is on and idle won't drop below 1100 rpm. I'd like to know the problem to see if I can fix it myself before having to take it in to the dealer.
