Automatic Climate Control maintenance

Well just as the title states, I have found out that my climate control in my 2016 Z seems to incorrectly function even after 8 return trips to Nissan and over 1,000.00 in warranty replacement electronics parts.

Well over 1 year after giving up since the next step Nissan was proposing was to replace my entire dash assy. I did not want to do that and was still able to get heat & cold air conditioning, just not in the automatic mode at various times/temperature conditions outside I finally found the solution on my own.

It was as simple as a "really dirty" Cabin Air Filter needing replacement. Nissan was NOT even aware of a filter being installed until I mentioned that back then but they stated this would NOT cause Climate Control malfunctions as indicated via Nissan Tech Support Group.

This weekend I decided to replace the filter since it was WAY over due!!!!

Guess What...... The climate control system now works as it did when the car was brand new once again.... Yahoo!!!!! I really wish Nissan would have listened to my request to replace this under warranty while troubleshooting my issue.

Anyways, I truly had a totally clogged up filter which contributed to the issue. Hope this information may help others having similar issues out there!!!!!!

Maybe I should posted this in the cabin filter replacement DIY section.....

Picture of the filter? I've seen some pretty nasty ones. Never heard of one being so dirty it caused the climate controls to malfunction :icon14:

Replacing the cabin air filter I think is something everyone neglects unfortunately and I believe when clogged can contribute to other problems as well. I did not change my cabin air filter in five years before and found dirt, tree leaves, cotton, and a dead rat. Now I’m changing my cabin air filter every two years.

Seen far dirtier filters than the OP's (can still see white on his) with no ill effects other than smell. I've driven cars for 10+ years without ever touching the cabin filter.

I've had a brand new filter on the shelf ready to go in since 2014. It's still waiting, and I don't think my '13 even came with one (the earlier models didn't for some reason).

That's what Nissan Tech Line also stated in regards to affecting Climate Control functionality but it sure did with mine or Nissan would NOT have tried to replace various electronic modules during their attempt to make mine work as designed. I just know that now it is 100% functioning as it did when I first got the car back in 2016 & can't argue with success directly after replacing the dirty filter. Also, I see there is a bit of white still showing on the outside but the internal slits are really totally blocked at the inner most areas creating very limited air flow.

370Z Cabin Air Filter, Bad Stench - Aw Rats!

Ya, had a helluva moldy stench coming into the cabin. Actually it was worse than mold - kinda smelled like something rotten.

So I decided to have a look in the cabin air vent intake (air intake vents back of engine compartment, passenger side, on top). So I find a bunch of insulation in there. I'm thinkin' (not being a farm boy) how the hell did that get in there? So I digs it out and lo and behold! - a dead stinkin' mouse!

Obviously I now need to spray some disinfectant in there a clean it up. So I find out I need to remove the glove compartment to access the Cabin Air filter. Took out a bunch of screws (6?) - still wouldn't come out...Hmmm. Find out there's one more screw on the upper right way back in there. Got that one out and then pulled a few times on the glove box and voila! Glove box finally comes out. I'll show ya what I found in there.

note: Don't know why these pics (just the thumbnails) are rotated 90 deg. - trying to fix that!
