dealership said 0w-20 in 2015 370Z
i just got my oil changed at a dealership and they put in 0w-20 and when i asked them about it they said that nissan recommends it and it is Mobil One Super Synthetic 0w-20 which is interchangeable with the 5w-30 ester oil the service manual says. its just not sitting right with me that 0w-20 is in my car when the owners manual says 5w-30 ester oil. will the 0w-20 mobil one super synthetic damage my motor in any way until my next oil change in 3k miles? and sorry about another oil thread, im new to this forum and tried the search engine but couldnt get it to work.

I'd do a web search and see if I could find out if Nissan says 0-20 is OK. Modern lubricants are pretty amazing so maybe it will work - but I have serious doubts.
Edit: Nissan no longer specs ester oil but many people have reported that it will quieten a noisy valvetrain. |

What's ester oil? http://www.the370z.com/engine-drivet...ended-oil.html |
Just had my oil change at the dealership yesterday and that is what they put in it too. From my records they changed to 0w-20 about 4 years ago. I have had no problem and I do track/drive the car hard.

Nissan switched to 0w-20 because it improves gas mileage by a teensy tiny bit, and thus helps them meet regulatory emissions goals. Lots of innovation in the past few years by the manufacturers with regards to tweaking oils and adding proprietary additives to help boost MPG.
That's why I stick to 5w-30 ester oil. The manufacturers are focused on MPG/emissions, not whether the oil is best for engine longevity. Said it once, say it again: it is in the car makers' best interests if your car dies after the warranty expires. |

Thank you everyone for the quick replies. I guess next time i go in i will make sure to ask for 5w-30 but im glad it wont damage my motor at all until the next oil change

Nissan designed the motor more than 10 years ago with 5w-30 oil. Unless they release the technical reasons for the 0w-20, I'd stick with the 5w-30

Dealers are plenty stupid. I had an Acura that called for 0W-20 (full synthetic and a little pricey). Manual said 5W-20 (semi-synthetic that is a lot cheaper) was ok as an interim oil if 0W-20 was not available but that you had to go back to 0W-20 on the next oil change.
Caught the dealer in a lie about the oil weight they use. They were doing 5W-20 on every oil change and charging the 0W-20 price. I was pretty sure this was the case, and I got photo evidence of it. Service manager was still a dìck about it - instead of acknowledging my complaint he told me I shouldn't have been back there :icon17: :shakes head: |

Exactly! Dealers don’t give a **** about these sorts of details. I’m convinced that they use 0W20 in all Nissans for convenience sake. There never was any service bulletin regarding replacement of 5w30 with 0W20. And I can bet that for those of us with warranties, it will be voided if there ever is an engine issue possibly caused by using the wrong oil. I would replace the 0W20 immediately if I was the OP. there is just a lot of dishonest practices in the auto repair business. I was told by numerous inside sources that it is very common that customers paid for serveries/repairs that were NOT done.
I personally had the bad experiences at the BMW and Lexus dealers. However, I wouldn't blame the manufactures, but rather the dishonest individuals.... Quote:

Ok, I'm the odd one in this bunch about dealerships, maybe it's from the fact that the dealership I have been going to for the past 5 years, has taken care of my Z, under Nissan gold preferred maintenance plan, that ran out in January this year. Have not experienced any problems, always did what was required, didn't try to sell an extra services. It just worked. Also I have been working with the same Service Rep, the entire time.
They even installed my Zspeed clutch kit that I purchased, and I haven't had any problems. guess I'm a little odd..:eekdance: |

It’s the only business I can think off that is legally forced to use a middleman to sell its products. My last 5 new car purchases have been over the internet. From research, to pricing, to financing, to delivery. Never put a foot in a “dealers” door and I never will again. https://www.popularmechanics.com/car...more-15748322/ |
FYI: "Dealership said" is synonymous with "Dealership lied".

I just got my 2019 370z in July of 2020 and went to the dealership for an oil change before I put it into storage for the winter.
When I saw the invoice with 0W-20 I started investigating... 5W-30 is recommended but Nissan moved a bunch of their cars to 0W-20 to meet efficiency standards. The 370z as far as I have seen did not change and the engine was engineered to take 5W-30. Engineering Explained did a good video on these more popular thinner 20 weight oils (0W is the cold weight and the second number is the hot viscosity) - I should show the dealership it XD... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKdh...eringExplained I am now awaiting an email back from both Nissans info email and the service manager from the dealership to confirm of the correct oil to be using. On Nissans website it still shows 5W-30 should be used. Fingers crossed the dealership will offer something to switch to 5W-30... Here are my sources: https://cdn.dealereprocess.org/cdn/s.../2017-370z.pdf (pg 410 on the PDF) https://service.nissan.ca/en/oil-change |
On my 2020 Z, it states right on the underhood tag at the bottom, 5w-30. I wouldn't use anything else.
(I tried to share a pic of it but no dice) |
