Was told my top replacement has to wait

Because it went through a redesign and they don't have one yet. Anyone else heard this?

blueranger 04-21-2014 10:40 PM

Nope mine was replaced and did not fit perfect on one side so they ordered a second one but still have not gone back for the install.

ksagis 04-22-2014 08:42 AM

I just had mine replaced two weeks ago in LA and they didn't have any problem getting a top for me.

Retropete posted here in June 2013 there was a difference between 2011 and 2012 based on a review of the service manuals (look for post 161):

@Retropete, any specific details you can share on what you noted as different in the years and what pages of the services manuals you noticed the differences? (I was curious myself but never dug into it)

sounds bogus to me

Fishy. Doubtful they "redesigned" the top for the 2nd time in this body style. I had mine replaced a year ago the week after I bought it. Took a week but came back perfect.

There are so many nightmare stories about having this top replaced that I am dreading it. The only comfort I have is that an independent high end upholstery and top replacement shop is doing the install. They've done installs for many 350s and370s. They are well known in the area for restoration and customization.

This dealership has been good to me so I don't really see why they would lie. I talked to a service manager today and he said they expect the top on Friday.

ParkStr8 04-22-2014 06:59 PM

My dealership did my replacement (sent it out) and it was 100% flawless. And I have had no (knock on wood hard) issues so far. I always say - regardless of make or model - the car is only as good as the dealership.

Best of luck - but if they are sending it out it should be fine.

I don't have any concrete data to support this, but it sounds to me that the tops that had more problems when they were fixed were ones that the dealer tried to change just the outer fabric.

My top was entirely changed. Canvas, hydraulics, frames, and all. It showed up in a crate.

I get the feeling if they are outsourcing the work, they are only changing the canvas since the other work involves a lot of mechanical work. I'd ask to clarify.

My holes are actually in the inner headliner on both sides near the window. It is rubbing something on the frame

Still waiting for approval from Nissan now. Made me take a bunch of pictures for their "engineers." I'm a few days away from getting pissed

ksagis 05-09-2014 02:34 PM

I had a similar process. Went in, complained to dealer. Dealer said they would work it. Corporate requested pictures. Dealer had to follow up with corporate. Corporate finally approved it.

Keep after them, it you stop asking, they will be disinclined to approve it since it's so expensive.

Good luck!

I'm like a dog on a pant leg. They won't get rid of me that easily.

TripleBlkZ 05-12-2014 02:33 PM

2 years of top problems on my 2010 since the first replacement done. I just sold the car not worth the future headache.

Ubetit 05-12-2014 06:20 PM

Top replacement was approved today. Mine is going to a well respected restoration, upholstery and top shop in Columbus. They've done 370Zs and they are doing my wife's friend's top as I type this. She had a basketball hoop got through her top and back window.

Ubetit 06-01-2014 07:55 AM

My top is in but I saw the job a company called Tri-Tex did on my friend's car and I wasn't too pleased. Overall the fit was ok but they obviously had problems with the trim pieces. Hers needs to go back. No way in hell I'd be happy with that. Looks like mine is going somewhere else.

Ubetit 06-04-2014 11:10 AM

The dealership doesn't do tops so my car is at an upholstery and convertible top shop in town. They've done about 10 350Zs and 6 or 7 370Zs so they have experience at least. They told me 4 days so they aren't fast but I just want it done right. I don't care if it takes 2 weeks.

Ubetit 06-05-2014 09:22 AM

Went to look at my top at the repair shop. They did a fantastic job on fit and finish on the new top but Nissan didn't send them the right parts to fix the problem... my ripped headliner. Everyone and at the dealership and even a corporate part person thought the top was all one piece/part number, it's not. Back to the drawing board.

Edit: Headliner is being overnighted.

Ubetit 06-13-2014 10:50 AM

Finally got my top fixed. Fit and finish is great and it works like it should. Kudos to Jim's trim shop.

I mentioned in the first post the top had been redesigned and the person that replaced the top made it a point to tell me that it was indeed a little different. I can see where there is a new piece of elastic attached on the sides to the frame.

ksagis 06-16-2014 04:29 PM

@ubetit, can you take a picture of the new piece of elastic or what's changed on the top? I'm curious what version I got installed a month ago.

I just tried to take pictures of it but it's hard to capture. Here's a pic of my old top with the area circled. You can see an indentation on both sides and if you stick your fingers in there you can feel the elastic attached to the top. this old top was not like that.

I'll see if I can capture it in the sunlight on our next sunny day
