Removing trunk foam
 

The roadster has several cubic feet of foam in the trunk filling in the spare tire space and creating a flat trunk floor. As someone posted (can't find the post), if you take the foam out your trunk, it nearly doubles in size.
I did that, and I like all the extra room, however now what is needed is to create a flat surface for the trunk mats (ie, the tire mounting bracket sticks up, as do some plastic pins), and improving the overall appearance, as the painted metal surfaces are exposed.
Does anyone have any suggestions for doing this?

You ever work with fiberglass?

I've thought of doing that also. I think you could just cut some plywood to fit with some small blocks of wood to add support where the floor varies in height.

I'm leaving mine as is for now since my weekly groceries fit exactly in the space provided with no room to slide around. A tight fit is good for groceries.

Anyone have pic of with and without foam? Is the road noise louder without foam?

I doubt the foam is adding much sound insulation. The foam is just there in place of a spare tire -- most roadsters don't come with spares.

How about Masonite. I think it would be lighter than the suggested plywood.

Poplar plywood @ 4mm thickness is about 3.5 lbs per square meter -- pretty light stuff. Pretty cheap too. I'm not really familiar with Masonite, but it would probably work as well.

Mine came with the spare tire... Mandatory in MD...

I am planning on going to a auto interior shop to have them custom cut and mold carpet tirm for the sides and adapt the trunk mat to sit at the bottom after the original pieces of foam are removed. I want them to cut and form a thin rigid foam piece to put over the trunk floor pan to make a smooth surface. The tools and tire repair kit I'm putting in a small tool bag. I want it to look as "factory original" as possible.

Any updates to this thread? I had to take the foam out this weekend and was SHOCKED at how much space is actually there. @fisherg, did you get anything made?

Roadster thread. It's a little different due to the trunk. I found that removing the foam below the convertible top allows placement of a 8" Bazooka sub. It's closer to the cabin and resonates better. I noticed that the trunk placed sub I had before was too muted due to the metal wall on the front side of the trunk.

Did you notice a big difference in road noise when you had the top up?
