Trunk release

So, I decided to combine two unpopular mods into something that I think is justifiable:

Unpopular mod #1: Adding an inside trunk release. Yes, I know, you still have to physically raise the trunk lid once it's unlatched. But if you're receiving a curbside delivery (which is something that now happens a lot with Covid rules), it's nice to be able to pop the trunk without getting out.

Unpopular mod #2: Installing an S-mode button in the blank space on non-sport models. Yes, I know the button won't do anything. But it looks better than a blank space.

Now if you combine these two, you can use your new S-mode button to pop the trunk! It's got good looks and functionality! I did this today in a few hours. The S mode button is perfect, since it's a simple one-pole, momentary switch, which is exactly what's needed for the trunk release. I got the button from a Nissan dealer., and I tapped into the trunk release wire in the BCM, following instructions elsewhere on the forum. (The pin location is attached; Credit to ChrisSlicks, who posted this in 2010.) All the switch has to do is momentarily ground this pin, and the trunk is released.

The switch works whether the car is on or off. But it will not work if the car is locked, which is a nice feature I think.

BoilardZ,

I don't think your mod is unpopular at all. It makes perfect sense for those with the skills and the need for an inside trunk release. A stroke of genius would be more like it.

That really is a great idea. I don't know why Nissan didn't bother to do it. Would you mind sending me a link or some quick instructions on how to do it.

I just managed to get my convertible top working after a year of it being broken so I have some minor skills. Any help would be appreciated.

It's an easy mod. You just have to tap into the trunk release wire, which is plugged into the BCM behind the passenger kick panel. The wire is gray, and the exact location is shown in the schematic posted earlier in this thread. (It's pin 67.) I tapped into this wire with a simple wire tap. All you have to do is run this wire to a momentary switch, and run the other terminal of the switch to ground. That's it! The switch will pop the trunk, whether the car is running or not. Note, however, that the button will NOT work if he doors are locked. This is a great feature, because I often leave my top down when I run into a store or whatever, so no one can just reach into my car and unlock my trunk.
I purchased the S mode button from a Nissan dealer. The hard part was coming up with a harness. I ended up fabricating one myself using a close-enough connector and an X-acto knife. My switch is also illuminated; I tapped into the same wire that illuminates the hazard light button that's nearby.
Nissan does make an actual trunk release switch, which some people put into a square blank in their center console. But if you have a convertible and heated seats, those blanks are all used up. All that was left for me was the S mode blank. But you could of course get creative and add a switch anywhere.
PM me if you have any specific questions.
Steve
