Looking at a 370z, any major reason to choice 6spd or auto?

Besides the obvious differences, any technical issues to choose one over the other. I know some other vehicles I looked at had issues with the transmission of one of the two, for instance. In my lurking I havent read anything major about 6spd issues but again, just wanted to clarify

Also I was looking at the Sport Model, or Maybe Sport/Touring but either way, it would have the extra blip thing on the 6spd (if it makes any difference to this discussion)

Thanks again!

i prefer the auto because u can do ither auto or manual its just as fast it may be a tad less powerfull may a few horses but its quicker gear changes and i do mostly city driveing so its much more fun to drive havent had any issues outta it yet

shadoquad 11-16-2010 10:31 AM

Without this thread boiling down to a religious war...

No, I don't believe that there are any significant tech issues that should sway you one way or another. I could be wrong, and you should search the tech forums on this site to double check that. But I think you should buy whatever one you enjoy driving more.

Personally, and this is just my opinion, I love manual transmission, and I try to buy every car with a manual. It's just how I like to drive. Nothing wrong with automatics, though.

And I believe that the 7AT is faster than the 6MT in a head-to-head drag race.

i was raised in auto... and i know thaey are fun... like shado said try to drive 1 of each... auto is better for city driveing manual is best for highway but they both can be used in manual mode how ever the auto does not have sport launch.. but i dont think that maters with the auto

any plans to turbo or super charge?

WhiskeyHotel 11-16-2010 11:12 AM

No big technical problems either way. Personal preference.

nah, minimal mods this go around. I have a SRT4 now which is heavily modded, but Im tired of working on the car I guess. Maybe just getting old :)

Go test drive both. I went in with the mindset of 6MT or nothing and came out an owner of a 7AT. I just didn't like the clutch of the 6MT. Just my preference.

Stanced370Z 11-16-2010 02:50 PM

6MT hands down. The synchro rev match was enough for me to make the leap over to a manual tranny. I've driven autos all my life and just loved the Z in stick better and yes I did test drive both.

the autos have the rev match to

NCSUPACK09 11-16-2010 05:36 PM

So does any other auto that has "manual" mode...

It really depends on the who's driving the 6spd. The AT will require less skill, although if I had to settle for an auto, the one in this Z is not really a compromise.

wilsonp 11-17-2010 12:45 AM

Actually most autos don't rev match and use the slip but with the aggressive lock-up on the Z it needs the rev match.

Not the ones I have driven, the 370 auto/manual is the only rev matching that I am aware of

Well, yeah, every drag race boils down to the drivers more than the cars. But I think that the AT in the Z shifts faster than most humans are capable of in the Z. I could be wrong on that btw, but that's just what I've read.

The M35/M45's when they came out (2006'ish?) had rev matched down shifts on their autos (I remember test driving them).

A Maserati Quattroporte (maybe a 2009) along side the road with me also was rev-matching on the downshifts. I don't think they come with manuals.

Regardless, I don't think there's really any technical consideration between picking an auto or manual, with exception of the previously mentioned forced-induction question.

It's really what you prefer that can decide...

Roach 11-17-2010 04:41 PM

refresh my memory, do the autos have paddle shifters or just the std shifter on the center console?

wilsonp 11-17-2010 04:44 PM

Paddles. Wish they turned with the wheel or were mounted a little higher (center at 10-2 instead of 9-3), but they work pretty well, and are very nice.

Sports cars should have clutches.

Unless you are racing for money, or at the pro level, or in some form of competition, or just plain don't like shifting.

The few tenths of a second you gain from a factory auto is worthless compared to the joy you get from stabbing the clutch and bangin' the gears imho. If it were all about accleration, the 370Z would never have sold a single unit after the advent of the 5.0 mustang. I admit there is more to driving a car than the 0-60.

wilsonp 11-18-2010 04:50 PM

I guess there is a lot of expensive, exotic two seaters that aren't sports cars, then? And I assume F1 cars don't count either...

There's a lot more to driving a sports car than acceleration - or pressing a clutch pedal.

Demon Z 11-18-2010 11:55 PM

Bottom line is personal preference. Both transmissions have their advantages and drawbacks. Drive both and pick the one that makes you smile the biggest.

TypeOne 11-19-2010 12:45 AM

I wouldn't have bought an Auto, never have, never will.

The only automatic car I will own will be a big 4dr sedan.

My sports cars will stay...eh... sporty.

6spd FTW.

optiontrader 11-19-2010 01:00 AM

I'm with Import on this one. LOVE the clutch; though autos are so advanced now, and semi-manuals are pure AWESOME - I still like rowing the gears... call me sentimental.
