2009 touring+sport $29,300...what can i talk him down to?

just found a 2009 touring + sport, 6spd, 8k, no nav.

He is asking 29,300 which is exactly what autotrader reccomends based on what others are asking for similar cars.

I was thinking $27-$27.5?

What do you think?

shoopajae10 10-26-2010 12:42 PM

considering its used and the 2011s are out. i would say thats reasonable.

Astrosfan 10-26-2010 01:06 PM

i was kinda thinking the same thing. I was considering offering him 26.5k as an opening offer but im not sure if that would be too low. its a difference of $2,800.

Is that too low?

Ive never negotiated with an individual for a car before, so im not sure how low he might be able to go...

shoopajae10 10-26-2010 01:12 PM

well it is a touring w/ sports package. so.. i think 27.5 or 28 would be good.

and have him give you 5 yr warranty on powertrain and all that good stuff on top.

Astrosfan 10-26-2010 01:14 PM

its from a private seller, so i dont think the extended warranty is an option. Is that what you are talking about?

shoopajae10 10-26-2010 01:16 PM

yeah sorry i thought you were buying from a dealer. lol

but yeah i wouldnt pay more than 28k for it IMO.

Astrosfan 10-26-2010 01:21 PM

heres my problem..
Say i got it for 28k. I can find base +sport w/ 20k for $26,900. A difference of $1100 for leather and 12k less miles. That sounds like a great deal except... insurance for a touring model is $25mo more than a base model. They could not explain why. So, thats and extra $300yr or $1500 through the entire loan....

PapoZalsa 10-26-2010 01:26 PM

There was a guy here that was going to buy or bought a brand new one for $29K touring 09 with like 147 miles.

It still 09, but is their money and that is what most of the books prices says, especially if is from a dealer.

shoopajae10 10-26-2010 01:26 PM

$25mo more!? thats some crazy ****!!

but yeah some guy in the other thread bought a brand new touring model for 28k including tt&l at the dealership. cars usually cost more at a dealership compared to those that are selling privately. It also didnt come with sports package either which is like 3k MSRP.

shoopajae10 10-26-2010 01:27 PM

^^ an 09 touring model.

Astrosfan 10-26-2010 01:37 PM

yea, i was just reading that post.

I think the problem might lie in the fact that the market for these used cars(at least the asking price) is higher than what many are getting these for. Also, this guy might have bought it for just under MSRP, so in his mind, his offer might sound like a good deal. not everyone is an educated consumer

One thing that lead me to this assumption is when you go to sell a car on autotrader, they give you a reccomended price to sell your car at (based on that others asking price is, dealer and private) i think. Anyways, he chose that price exactly. Also, he picked the featured selling option so i think he wants this gone....

any thoughts??

shoopajae10 10-26-2010 02:27 PM

just tell him. 27k or no deal. if he says no. then just walk. there will be plenty of other good offers.

also if you walk, maybe he will change his mind. haha

cossie1600 10-26-2010 06:30 PM

25K more like, 26K tops

LONDON2012 10-26-2010 06:45 PM

I agree that $28k is the ceiling. This dealership is having trouble moving their 09 Touring with 405 miles for $24,750. They have been relisting this car for a few weeks now. No reserve though. So considering that the sport package was like $2800 for the 09 MY, $27,500 should be reasonable.

walk away from him and tell him to call you when he is serious about selling it. Say that as you are heading for the door. Thats way tooo much. I think even $27 K is probably too high for a 2009.

I was trying to trade my 09 touring in for a vette and they were low balling like crazy cuz they said its hard to sell these cars used for what KBB and all say they are worth.

Heard that from other sources as well.

Astrosfan 10-27-2010 11:26 AM

The car appears to be in mint condition. It also checks out on autocheck as 1 owner and no wrecks...

I think what i might do is go test drive and check out the car. then tell him that all i can afford is 27k and feel that it is all the car is worth based on market conditions(several cars in his price range have been on the same lots since i started looking months back), edmunds, ect...

I'll let him know that if he's serious about selling the car, and it checks out with the dealer(ppi), then i'll cut him a check this weekend.

now all i have to do is hear back from him.

btw... edmunds has the car for $26,107(trade-in), $28,911(private), $31,286(dealer). somewhere between trade and private shoud be fair...

kbb, from what i hear, was designed for dealers and gets alot of their numbers from the west coast. Their prices are higher for retail and lower for trade-ins. found the article on kiplinger.com

370fan 10-27-2010 11:34 AM

I'd offer him 25.5 and see what happens.

WORST CASE SCENARIO: he says "no."

cjof2003 10-27-2010 11:44 AM

I wouldnt go much if any over $27k.

these cars are NOT selling hardly at all. I've been watching 3 members trying to sell there cars on here for months. They are asking ~$29k for 09 touring sports (and aren't selling)

basically, the value of these cars is higher than what they are really selling for.

Thats what we are trying to tell him. For that amount I would pay a few thousand more and get a new one.

Just an FYI, I'm looking at another 370z and after pulling teeth I was able to get an 09 Yellow touring+sport+nav with 5500 miles for 27,400 OTD. This was after leaving the dealership 2 times. I would shoot for around that price.

lol a dealership in SoCal is asking 31k for a 2009 with sport + touring with 24k miles. I tried to talk the price down and they said the most they would go is $500 off because these cars sell like hot cakes....

Go back in a month or two and say that hot cake is looking pretty warm and stale still sitting on the lot.
