Blacked out the Nismo with Plasti Dip

Picked up some Plasti Dip from Home Depot today and tried to black out the Z. I realize there is lots of overspray on the trunk lol, I was lazy but will clean it up tomorrow. I'm also planning to do the door handles tomorrow as well. Let me know what you think!

Looks awesome man! I did my door handles with plasti dip too, but I hated that rubber feeling every time I touched them to open the doors. I took them off after a little bit, even though they looked really good. Just a heads-up. Feel the plasti dipped stuff with your hands a couple times and make sure you can deal with that on the door handles. Made them feel cheap when I had mine plasti dipped IMO.

I mean you took the pictures with your potatoe, but nonetheless it came out pretty good.

Looks mean!! Nice man!

Glokwork 06-10-2012 08:58 AM

Definitely do the door handles and side marker lights! The texture is unusual feeling but you can do a clear coat over them to help with that.

nepali 06-10-2012 09:52 AM

Before I opened this thread, I thought you had Plasti-dipped your entire car! :)

That could work, but it also makes the plasti dip harder to take off.

Plastidip makes their own clear coat and it still peels off pretty easy! I love their products and I spray stuff constantly when I'm bored

Yeah I used it when I did my handles, but it still has that plasti dipped feeling to it. I like a smooth feeling for the handles like they are from the factory or if you get them painted. That's just me though. If you can live with plasti dip on the handles then they do look great. I did find that they tend to start peeling from the inside of the handles if you don't spray in there properly (which I apparently didn't).

Glokwork 06-10-2012 01:58 PM

I agree. I had mine painted to match and I'm very happy with it!

MacLean 06-12-2012 08:30 PM

Looks clean & nasty all at the same time. Blk her out.

ts-c63 06-14-2012 07:22 AM

What did you use for the tail lights? overlay or spray?

I don't like it.

But it's your car and you're free to do whatever you want to it.

Flaguy 06-15-2012 10:20 AM

Forgive my ignorance here but what if you did that and didn't like it? Does that stuff come off easily? If it does...and you do like it...won't it come off easily from daily wear and tear?

How about on the paint of the car? It looks like you just Helen Keller'd the 370z and nismo badges...that stuff comes off the paint of the car easily too?

Yeah it peels right off very easily. I did my door handles with it too and didn't like it. Took me like 10-20 seconds to peel it all off each handle.

Haha...sweet...i'ma try this out this weekend. Any tips for spraying the rims/badges?

Be sure to mask the surrounding areas off really well. It's easy to pull this stuff off when you have multiple layers of it, but getting the overspray off is a b1tch. I had to clay bar my car to get some of the overspray off. Be sure to put on nice thick coats so that it is easier to pull off if you need to.

I have youtube blocked at work right now, but you can look up a video of another forum member who made a video on how to plasti dip the badges on a 370Z.

b1adesofcha0s 06-15-2012 10:40 AM

For the rims, definitely take the wheels off first. Make sure to spray a lot in the area surrounding the lug nuts. I would say one can per wheel is a good amount.

TopElement 06-18-2012 09:56 AM

I think it does not look good. At the very least powdercoat the wheels gloss black, or maybe even the original silver would be better.

To me, it looks like someone trying too hard to modify the car with Home Depot supplies.

+1. I think a little niteshade would be cool if you gave it that black chrome look. You would obviously need to take them off

babbagandu 06-18-2012 02:04 PM

For those who say it doesn't look good, what exactly do you not like? Is it the fact that it's a flat black rather than a glossy color?

Nismodean 06-24-2012 10:16 PM

I'm curious to know how he did the tail lights as well.

I like the part where you can't read. I mentioned why there was overspray in the pics. It was cleaned up the next day.

For those who asked, the lights were done by the previous owner. It is a film overlay but idk where it's from
