6th Gear grind

Has anybody with a 6 speed 370 experienced this? Mine started grinding 2 days ago about 75% of the time I put it in 6th gear? The car has 3k miles on it:(

nuts4nissan09 09-16-2010 07:44 PM

No grinding

I have a '09 Sports w/ the 6 speed and have not had an issue w/ grinding in the 16,xxx miles I've put on the car. It is a little stiff going into 2nd when cold, but fine when warmed up. I don't baby the car, but I do try to be positive w/ my shifts and be kind to the trans. Not saying you aren't, just that some folks abuse their transmissions and then wonder why the synchros are shot. Some have reported grinding in 5th and 6th (especially at high speed-5th to 6th). The ones w/ the grind had their transmissions replaced under warranty. Time to go the dealer. Good luck.

Big J 09-16-2010 08:27 PM

Yea I guess it may be going to the dealer next week. I do not baby this car but I have put alot more harder miles on plenty other cars and never had a problem.

Supergoji 09-17-2010 11:39 AM

make sure your clutch was installed and the pedal adjusted properly. it can cause the your trans to grind when you shift.

Wouldn't it grind in the lower gears also if that's the case?

Push370zzz 09-17-2010 12:40 PM

i grind into fif gear about 20% of the time

Big J 09-17-2010 12:49 PM

It only grinds in 5th, I think if it were a clutch issue it would do it in more than that one gear. I'm gonna drive it a little longer bc I'm gonna look like a retard if I get to the dealer and it doesn't grind but like once of twice if at all.

usually thats the case, but my buddy had a transmission that grinded 5th because the shift fork was a little bent. so it could be that as well.

CrownR426 09-21-2010 12:10 AM

Strange...
I've heard of 5th gear grinding but not 6th...

Master_Ly 09-21-2010 02:06 PM

Ouch. Sounds like what I went through just recently. Here's my thread: http://www.the370z.com/engine-drivet...nsmission.html. I hope this will help you.

Big J 09-23-2010 10:18 AM

Well oddly it has stopped grinding the past few days lol. Maybe it'll just all go to hell soon.

Big J 09-23-2010 10:19 AM

I noticed that I usually drive1-2-3-4-6 gear, if I go from 5-6 then there is no grinding.

vipor 09-23-2010 10:58 AM

My 6th gear synchro was failing and I had the whole transmission replaced under warranty. This is most likely your problem, they should take care of it for you.

I had one tech blame it on shifting from 4th to 6th since it was more prevalent in that situation, but it shouldn't grind regardless. I pushed the issue with someone that actually could make decisions and it was handled. Took about a week.

I had the exact same problem. Two dealers refused to warranty my transmission because they said that I caused it by skipping from 4th to 6th. I have been driving manual transmission cars for over 20 years and have always shifted the same way. The third dealer I went to replaced it no problem.
This seems to be a problem that is popping up more and more. I now have a issue with the new trans. 2nd to 3rd grinds at low rpm. I hope this isn't a problem that I have to deal with for the life of the car.

2 to 3 happened to my boy DaineZ couple weeks ago..
he had to pay the dealer though it wasn't through warranty... :shakes head:

vipor 09-24-2010 03:56 PM

After the first dealership gave me the runaround I called the one I purchased my Z from and explained my problem, told them what happened, and expressed what I expected to happen. "I want to bring my car in, drop it off to have a new transmission installed under warranty, and be there less than 15 minutes. Please have a car waiting for me." They did exactly that, zero issues.

Zvengeance 11-14-2010 10:49 PM

interesting...i get the grind and i don't even skip gears.

it usually happens on 3rd, and 5th. you guys suggest bringing it now or when it starts happening more often?

right now i say it happens 15-20% of the time. i thought i was shifting incorrectly but looks like i'm not.

Reaper42 11-15-2010 02:18 AM

Ive had problems shifting into 5th gear as well. :(

Demon Z 11-15-2010 04:01 PM

I've noticed this a bit myself. If I accelerate aggressively in first, second, and third, then skip to sixth, sometimes it doesn't want to go in. I can't help but think that maybe I don't have the clutch all the way in or something stupid like that and start second guessing myself, but I've been driving manuals for a long time, and I know when something's not right.

CBRich 11-15-2010 04:33 PM

Just wanted to chime in as my Z has just recently started the 6th gear grind also. I expect no less than a new transmission under warranty when I go in. Hopefully that's the case.

can you update when you take it to the dealership?

i took mine today for another issue and i brought this up. they took a look at the transmission and they said it was fine.

for me it does not happen every day. like someone said above it almost feels like we are shifting incorrectly.

for the rest that got their transmission changed did they actually have you test drive the car with them?

Yep, mine grinds also

My sixth gear definitely grinds, and so does my fifth. However, my car is a 350 and has 80k miles on it. I've changed the clutch and the transmission fluid, and the problem is still there : / I can say that this is not a biproduct of my driving at least, because it's happened since I bought the car. Even the previous owner admitted to 'having his fun,' in it, so I'm assuming he was trying to act all pro in my baby.

LMBmikeZ 12-27-2010 02:52 PM

this makes me sick to think it is still happening to our Z's:eek:!!! I had this problem with my 300zx and was also mentioned by almost everyone on the forums:shakes head:

I can honestly say though that my 40th Anni 370Z has not had any grinding in any gears!!!.... I can only hope next years driving season brings on no grinding!

dirTy_shoeZ 01-02-2011 10:46 AM

mine shifts like butter when your driving it hard and kinda clicks in driving slow. no grinds tho

LMBmikeZ 01-02-2011 09:21 PM

BUMP for an update from VIPOR

Marcus Ryan 01-03-2011 12:44 PM

Not quite an update from vipor but I'm having precisely the same thing happen. 6th started grinding last week so I took it into the dealer I bought it from and they said that Nissan does not allow them to rebuild transmissions so if there's a problem they just replace it. In any case it's almost certainly the synchros. They didn't give me any trouble at all, told me to bring it in Tuesday and they'll put in the new transmission.

LMBmikeZ 01-03-2011 07:16 PM

damn!:shakes head: I am not looking forward to this! I had the grind in my Z32, so I tried to use the redline MT90 switch for tranny oil. I noticed a difference :driving: but it wasn't gone!

Now I have my fingers crossed hoping that my 370 doesn't get this problem........:ugh:

6th Gear Grinding

I have the same issue with the 6th grinding. I am taking mine in next tuesday...I called and talked to the service manager at my nissan dealer and he stated he has not seen one come back yet, but has heard of this from other dealers. I fully expect what was already stated above, bad syncro = new transmission. Ill let ya know what happens...

symptoms - grinding when entering sixth gear from 5th gear.

butdamnbrian 07-06-2011 08:32 PM

i understand the synchros are different for 5 and 6 than they are for 1 2 and 3. anyone know more about this?

dmhenderson 07-08-2011 07:38 AM

This happened to me as well after less than a year on my Z. Took it to the dealership, they told me nothing was wrong with it. Had a catastrophic clutch failure about a week later. They replaced it under warranty with no complaints immediately.

hdskull 07-11-2011 07:01 PM

This has happened to me in 3rd gear from time to time.

Same here, it seems to only happen to me after driving the car for a long time (30+ mins at least)

I only have 650miles on it, it doesn't consistently happen...so I don't know if this is something I need to worry about.

tyler20c 07-13-2011 06:40 PM

Mine did this and progressively got worse but in 5th gear. Took it in to the dealer and they deemed it a "complete transmission failure" and replaced the entire thing. No issues now.

windex 07-20-2011 12:30 AM

Having this issue too as of friday. Seems to grind under hard acceleration.

chuckd05 07-20-2011 12:37 AM

hard acceleration into 6th ? lol, not saying its not possible but what do you mean?

Sorry if I accelerate first, second slow into third it'll grind fourth. If I go 1,2,3,4 to 6 it'll grind.

Exactly what my car does. 3rd or 4th to 6th results in a grind every time. I realize some people might say, "well, just don't skip gears", but this is neither normal nor acceptable. The order of gear selection is irrelevant. I've driven far cheaper cars and skipped gears with nary an issue.

LafitteZ 07-23-2011 10:05 AM

well fellas bring it to nissan they had to replace my transmission for that. mine grinded going from 1st to 2nd and some are doing it from 3rd to 4th so im guessing yalls are doing it that way. Just hope it isnt the stupid syncros because nissan is gonna give you hell to fix it.

LafitteZ 07-23-2011 10:07 AM

going pick up mine today for that same ********.
