Service engine soon light??

My service engine soon light has been coming on this past couple of months. I took it to the dealer, and they charged me a hundred and something dollars to do a complete "test" :icon14:. Conclusion: guy said I either had bad gas or it may be due to my "aftermarket air filters", which were in there when I bought the car. The intake itself is oem, but i guess the box filter is aftermarket. I find it strange that the light is just coming on now when I've had the car since January. The tech said the car detected that it was running lean at one point, causing the light to come on.

I usually rest the light myself, but it comes back on after a few hundred miles..sometimes more. It is back on today and I am supposed to be back at the dealer Wednesday morning.

Any idea what is going on here? I've read several times on the forum our cars have a history of issues with the gas cap. I was thinking maybe replace that and see what happens

Go to the auto parts store and have them scan the code. Then we can help.

Super Werty 10-30-2014 12:53 PM

My guess is the filters are over oiled and the MAF sensor needs to be cleaned

This. Most will scan the code for free.

JWillis72 10-30-2014 12:56 PM

What chuck said or buy a scanner so you can read the codes yourself. They are a lot cheaper than paying a dealer $100.

Got the code read.. P2A00. Had something to do with the O2 sensor? I remember this is similar to what the dealer told me the first time I went. (I was out of town and stopped at a Chevy dealer. He cleared the code and told me if it comes back to get it checked out.) A couple of months of so later..light comes back on. Nissan then tells me the bad gas or something with the air filters.

Mine is throwing the SES light too. took it to the dealership that charged me $94 to say its having a hard time adjusting from summer gas to winter gas.... looks like i'll just change my coil packs and spark plugs myself!

Yeah, the dealer charged me like $118 to basically give me no answer at all. "Must be either bad gas or something with the air filter" they said.

wanker 10-30-2014 03:24 PM

With a check engine light, always check that your gas cap is screwed on tight.

Also any modifications to the exhaust system can cause issues.

gomer_110 10-30-2014 07:04 PM

OP, do a search for that code on here. You'll find a number of us have had this pain in the a$$ code show up. Some have found leaks in the intake system (post maf) or leaks in the exhaust system and once fixed, the problem went away.

Others of us however never found a single issue. Even checked my AFR and didn't see any issues. In my case I just disabled this code in my Uprev tune.

kenchan 10-30-2014 07:09 PM

Can buy like 3 obd2 readers at 118... maybe more

Yeah haha..I just ordered one this afternoon. That's something I should've had a loooong time ago . The dealer also didn't exactly advertisement that this "testing" was going to cost over a hundred dollars either. They told me there was nothing wrong with the car and I was under the impression I would pay nothing or close to it. I let the guy know I wasn't happy. He said if the light comes on again, they will re-run the test for free.

Yeah, I was searching around the forum earlier. I came to the conclusion of what you just told me :icon17:. I also read a few posts from you about this code haha. It's a PITA and there are many causes. I might just clear the light when it comes on (just ordered an OBD II today). If I go to the dealer this second time and they still come up with nothing, I'm going to ignore it.

As far as the Uprev tune..where would I have to go to get that done? Like a performance shop? I'm assuming the dealer probably doesn't do it. How much does it cost?

Most people go to a performance shop and have the car tuned using the uprev software on a dyno. As different shops charge different rates for this your best bet is to find a shop in your area and get a quote. iirc Uprev has a map showing their certified tuners so you can find one that's near you.

Were you able to pull a code it was throwing? If you haven't just go to the local parts store they will gladly do it for you and tell you what could be wrong in hopes you buy the parts from them.

I don't want to make this too simple, but I had this issue a few times early on with my car. I had the dealer check it out and it was "vapor leak" around the gas cap. The SES light is focused on emissions. I started just pressing harder when replacing the gas cap and gave the cap a few extra cranks . Never have had the problem since.

I hope it is as simple as that. I've seen a few guys on here that claimed it was at fault of the gas cap. I find it strange that it comes and goes though..when I put the cap on the same way every timee :shakes head:

Keep in mind that with the arrival of colder weather the seals change a bit. My old 90 TT developed all kinds of gas vapor leaks when winter arrived only to disappear in warmer weather.

I could see that. My first SES light was in the beginning of June. Wasn't too cold then...

Just got back from the dealer..again. They said they think it might be the sensor thats causing the P2A00 code to be thrown. Replacing the sensor is almost $600. He said "but there could be other issues with it". Say what I took out of it is that they want me to pay $600 to fix something on the CHANCE that it could be the problem?? I told him forget it, I'll trade the car in before I do that. What now??:shakes head:

wanker 11-05-2014 12:39 PM

I'd clean your MAF sensors and put in OEM air filters or dry after market filters and see if that helps. I'd also get under the car and inspect your exhaust for leaks or damage.

Don't you just love stealerships? The sensor is $185. They love to rip people off. AIR FUEL RATIO SENSOR - 370Z (Z34) 2009+ :: Nissan Parts, NISMO and Nissan Accessories - Courtesyparts.com

And the install is a very simple DIY.

Yep, with the right tools not hard at all.

Just make sure you get the right one. Nissan changed the electrical connector during the 2010 model year. Courtesy unfortunately doesn't show the newer version of the part.

Ask me how I know. :shakes head:

Assuming you have small hands. The electrical connectors are in very tight spots, especially the driver's side. When I changed both of mine this last summer I spent more time getting the sensors unplugged and plugged back in than I did changing the sensors themselves.

Yeah, I just recently took off my Momentum headers and installed the stock manifolds, it was a little hard to get the harness unclipped but not too bad. I thought breaking the sensors loose was the hardest part. But my point is there is no way the dealership should charge $600 for that. I think the code OP listed is for bank 1 (passenger side) so that is easier than the other side imo. And for the mechanic to say that he could change the sensor but he isn't sure that will fix it is BS. The FSM has step by step what to check to ensure it is the sensor that is faulty.
