MPG different between Sports and Base?

I traded in my 2010 Base Coupe with 43k miles for a 2013 coupe with sports package and 8.5k miles. While I love the 2013 and especially it's brakes (I had to squeeze between two cars at highway speeds), I am finding that while my 2010 base coupe gave me 24-24.5 mpg in highway driving at 75+ mph! my new car is a couple of mpg less. It seems to be between 22 and22.7 mpg.

I don't' know why but there is a decidedly less mpg at the same speeds.

I average around 25 mpg on my 2013 and it's still pretty low mileage at around 1500 miles. Are you running the same oil, tire pressures correct, air cleaners clean?

All jokes aside..My 2010 Nismo was running the above mentioned 24 - 24.5
mpg even 25 mpg with no wind and allot of Mother's carnauba car wax.. I
have seen a significant drop in mpg as of lately..One big change is my weight.

Have not checked any of these. It had only 8.6k miles and I just have driven it for 7 days for a total of about 900 miles including a 450 mile round trip. The dealer had stated he had changed the oil, claims it has synthetic, it looks clean. I have not really checked the air but the TPS light has not come on. I have not checked the air filter.

Maybe, I will just go get an oil and oil filter change and check air tomorrow.

Shouldn't be too different. the sport does weigh slightly more and has larger (heavier) rotors and wheels. Sport cd is 0.29 and base os 0.3

A ton of other things could factor into this, from the ambient temperature and humidity to the brand of tire or the weight of motor oil.

ZeeBabar 09-01-2014 05:49 PM

Thanks. The tires are OEM. The oil seems new and clean and the air filters are not so bad. In any case, it is what it is.

Averaging 26-27mpg at 80mph base, however I only weigh 140lb

Sports package (includes the extra weight) very well may get slightly less

Also depends on environmental factors

The new engine could just need to break in.
Nevermind missed the car was used, could be the way it was broken in...

I have the sports manual and back roads to work I'm at 25 mpg considering I tend to put the pedal to the metal few times to pass the driver who may at one time or another worked at a funeral home driving way below the speed limit

In the past when I bought a used car the first thing I would do was change the oil, that way way I knew for sure it was nice clean and fresh. Go with synthetic for extra mileage and as mentioned it won't hurt to check tire pressures and get some clean fresh air cleaners too. Maybe go with K&N for extra efficiency.

That's not bad I average 21 on the highway and 17 city

Read T 09-04-2014 08:53 PM

Gas Mileage

WHY? My 2012 got 24.5 to 26, my new 2014 gets less, 22.5 highway. Has the gear ratio in the rear end changed?

Zoren 370 09-05-2014 07:25 AM

Mpg is relative the way you drive your Z! Goes with any vehicle you drive, unless you ride a horse!
I have sports under 60 miles freeway i get 28mpg
Normal me driving 18mpg cant post my speed against forum rules.

ZeeBabar 09-05-2014 05:50 PM

The problem is that I am the driver, driving no differently now than with my 2010 base and the mpg is definitely less.

Soon, I will get an oil and filters changed, re-check air and see if it makes a difference.

JARblue 09-05-2014 06:32 PM

I think you're just enjoying the new car more :driving:

Are you really that concerned about the MPGs? If so, it looks like you're only option is to trade the car back in for your old one :ugh:

NoLaKrewe 09-05-2014 06:42 PM

Mpg threads on sports cars and 4x4 forums make me LOL

NoLaKrewe 09-05-2014 06:42 PM

Does my tire fit?

Actually, I love the car! Just wondered what the cause could be? For now, I am seeking ways to improve the interior such as Nav system and blue tooth, synthetic leather sear covers, etc.

It could very well be caused by the wider tires on the sport, I know my l/km (sorry I live in Canada) increased a little when I switched to a wider tire on my g37:ughdance:

You may live in Canada, but I sure hope you meant km/l ;)

In Canada we use l/100km ;), my curreny milage on my Z is around 10.0l/100km, which is about 23.5mpg:tiphat:

tnav 09-05-2014 11:15 PM

MPG will increase as you put more miles, I was getting combined 19.5 MPG at 10k miles, 21.5 MPG at 15k, and now I am getting 22.5 MPG at almost 20k. At this rate, many years from now, my Z will get better MPG than a Prius ... all kidding aside, both of my 350z did the same, my best MPG was at around 60k miles with my last 2003 350z Track.

Well, it's true that you learn something every day. That seems so foreign <GROAN>to me. Thanks for the information!
