oil temps and long distance driving

Hey all. When I drive around town my oil temps quickly get to about 220 but usually stays there. I live in Virginia and will be headed to south Carolina to see my sister. I'm traveling with my 8 year old too. I would take my Tahoe but I let the tags expire plus the brakes are about to go. Anyway do you think I would run into a oil temp problem driving that far with no oil cooler or should I just rent a car?

Arrvaxx 08-15-2014 08:48 PM

Pre-oil cooler I never had a freeway temp issue. It was always spirited driving. You should be fine.

220 is high I live in FL and have no oil cooler and on highway mine doesn't run that hot. When is the last time you changed or checked oil?

If your gonna be on the highway to your destination it will stay cooler cause your getting more airflow to cool the car down . in town will always heat up cause of very little cool air hitting the radiator and cooling things down . and the cooling fans dont turn on soon enough for in town driving car will be ok but you should notice the hotter it gets the more laggy the throttle gets .

I regularly drive long distance and never had a problem. just a few weeks back I drove 18 hours straight at over 80 mph almost the whole time and was fine.

I just did a 7300+ mile road trip doing 12 - 14 hrs of driving per day, and my oil temp never got above 220. You should be fine.

Live in South Carolina. No Oil cooler.

220 hauling butt on the hwy. 180-220 sitting in traffic.

You'll be fine.

I agree with the above posters. I did FL to GA to FL in one day, with a dyno tune session in between (15+ pulls) and never once worried about my temps. Once they reach an equilibrium, you won't have any issues.

Don't make the drive in 5th gear at 75 mph, and you'll be fine.

220F is not "high", in fact for around-town driving (stop-and-go) it's perfectly fine.

OP: I've got an '09 (no oil cooler) and driven 250 miles out to Las Vegas and then back with no issues whatsoever. You'll be fine.

BosLax6123 08-16-2014 07:17 PM

You guys know that 212 or around that is normal operating temp in most vehicles. I understand the concerns OP, but don't be overly concerned with something that is completely normal.

What fuel tank are you running :p

I know we're all concerned about our cars, but c'mon now. You think this car can't drive long distances? It'll be fine. You see higher temps in stop-n-go then you will, on highway.

Tadpole 08-17-2014 03:51 PM

You will be fine. I haven't heard any issues other than track days here in Texas. Road trips are of no concern to heat.

Same here, drove 1200 miles with nothing other than normal temps. Around Orlando in damn hot summer nothing over normal, that's interstate stop/go and downtown stop/go traffic. In Orlando I4 is parking lot.

olddudesrule 08-17-2014 10:49 PM

Man, people really sweat what amount to normal oil temps. You need 210-215 to boil off any moisture that can accumulate from short, around town trips anyway. I did install a Z1 24 row cooler on mine, but mainly due to where I live. OP, don't sweat the trip at all. If you have kept up on the maintenance, you'll be fine.

H2O_Doc 08-17-2014 10:56 PM

I had issues with oil temps, but never with long distance driving. That was always the one time when there were NO issues. high temps always seemed to be related to high RPMs and really not speed. In fact, before I installed my oil cooler, I'd jump on the interstate to get enough air flowing across my gizmos to cool the motor (and oil) down.

Maybe if you're driving 900 mph...in third gear, I could see it; else, I can't imagine.

 where the hell did you go? lol

Va_gunguy 08-18-2014 08:50 AM

Thanks for the input everyone. Well I made it. Temps were a max of about 225 the whole way. Averaged about 85 mph the whole way. Now to enjoy myself and do it again on Thursday!

MacCool 08-18-2014 09:33 AM

Sheesh, the ob/co crowd of gauge-watchers really has the newbies paranoid about the mythical oil temp problem.

Suwanee, GA to Hood River, OR and back. We took a northern route out (GA, AL, TN, KY, IN, IL, WI, MN, ND, MT, ID, WA and OR) and a southern route back (OR, ID, UT, AZ, NM, TX, LA, MS, AL and GA). Total mileage was 7312.7.

2011_6Spd 08-18-2014 10:45 PM

Yeah you want have any probs cruising at speed on the interstate at 80+mph. Highest I've seen with 100-105F temps at 80-85mph is like 230-235F.
