Upgraded horn

Has anyone upgraded the horn on their Z?

Over the past weekend I was driving back and forth between LA and OC and on 3 separate occasions I was nearly merged into on the highway. Everytime it happened I laid on the horn but I could barely hear it, I can't imagine the cunnt in the other car would be able to hear it.

Just thinking about the situation pisses me off because I really shouldn't need to use my horn but people are stupid and I need a better way to let them know.

Have you tried using a finger?

Aviator44 08-14-2014 04:18 PM

This should work well for you

I'm afraid my tint blocks it.

Also, these people clearly didn't even realize I was there because they didn't hesitate or stop. I had to slam on my brakes and quickly change lanes before I was run off the road.

Doesn't Nissan make a 'sport' horn?

Nissan Factory OEM Sports Horn Kit

It's listed as for the Cube, but I'm almost 74.39297% sure it'll fit other Nissan applications as well.

Not sure how much louder it is though

dP3NGU1N 08-14-2014 04:24 PM

Lol, having a compressor in my car is a bit more dedication that I'm willing to commit to. :p

OH, My :wtf2:

Problem is, with some people you could be driving the oscar mayer wiener truck, with a oceanliner horn, and they would do the same thing. (male or female)
Glad no damage was done. Actually, I am going to see the Dragon next week, and the grandson is taking me to the dukes of hazzard museum in Gatlinburg. They have the "Dixie" airhorn there for $60.... Want me to grab one for Ya??

TexasChuck 08-14-2014 04:27 PM

Extra Loud

IMHO.....there is a fine line between really making your point....and becoming as obnoxious as the other guy, then yOu becoming their target. I've looked into it. Hela makes some hellacious horns. Changing them out on the Z, I don't know about.
Excuse me ... It's Hella Supertone.

I'm not sure I can pull it off with the Z unless I get a confederate flag wrap for my roof.

kenchan 08-14-2014 04:34 PM

when i lived in LA i did not blow the horn... cause never know if they'd just turn around and blow my head off. :eekdance:

honestly i think the Z's stock horns sound fine...

dP3NGU1N 08-14-2014 04:45 PM

Currently looking at these. Just don't know if they're universal fitment because there seem to be a few of them that all look the same with slightly different model numbers.

Amazon.com: Hella SuperTone Horn Kit, 118 db: Automotive

onzedge 08-14-2014 04:47 PM

I don't have an upgraded horn in my 370z, but use Hella Dual tone in my 240Z's. It makes them sound like Volvos.

I do have a "Honk if You're Horny" bumper sticker on the 370 though.

Had those on my previous car. Now I know why they call themselves "Hella". Because they're "hella" loud :bowrofl:

:ugh2:

You may be right. but I swear between the people I was honking at not reacting to it at all and the fact that I can barely hear it either when I'm sitting in the cabin (music playing, exhaust going) I don't think it's good enough.

Another car with music on and windows up, particularly a sedan with noise isolating material, simply can't hear our horn and won't even know anybody is there.

Must be something new they're teaching in driver's school. Used to be those merging onto the highway were supposed to match the speed of highway traffic AND adjust their speed to merge safely, either speeding up or slowing down. If your town is anything like mine, now the majority of drivers just putt right onto the highway without even looking if anyone is in the space they are pulling into...AND then they act all indignant because I didn't come to a stop so they could enter the highway doing 40mph (70 mph limit). :shakes head:

Oh, and apparently getting to the end of the entrance lane is an automatic right of way to cause every other driver in the area to take evasive action! :icon14:

RonRizz 08-14-2014 04:55 PM

Just went back and actually watched the video. I think I may have peed in my pants.......Hilarious

That happens around here as well. Especially the last minute merging maneuver that many drivers pull. And god forbid those bastards don't make it into the lane; they usually straight up block the lane they're stuck in because they refuse to budge until they get their way. So people behind them are scrambling to get from 60+ mph to 0 within the next 40ft or so.

But the 3 times this happened to me this weekend were during cruising speed. Once at 11pm when the highway was actually mostly open.

Maybe now is a good time to install a turbo. Then you could tap into the compressor to supply that locomotive type air horn.

PM me and I'll give you the number of one of my ex's. She was the kind of person that would stick her head out the window to make sure you heard her screaming at you! She'd make a great horn if zip tied to the bumper. Nice thing about her is that you wouldn't even have to press the horn...she'd take care of everything.

Out of respect to southerners and Mexicans out in tx, My horn blows the "general lee" horn and "La cucaracha".

Ah, City boys found out about train horns. Not cool to do it at the horses.

axmea? 10-23-2014 02:22 AM

So Denny --- what did you end up doing?

370zrider 10-30-2014 09:37 PM

2 Attachment(s)
I've just installed this:

Model 385-2T Full Blast® 12-Volt 116 Decibels 510 Hz Two Terminal - Electric Replacement Horns - Horns

It is bigger than stock as shown on the pics and of course it's louder.

BTW The car has two horns, high and low tone. I just changed the high tone.
