7AT and cruising to a stop

Do you guys feel a "rubberband effect" when coasting to a stop? Hard to explain in technical terms but the car just doesn't seem to cruise smoothly. The car seems to engine brake very noticeably hard when the 7AT is downshifting(in D mode.)

Don't know if this is a sportscar thing(although my last car was a 00 Z28) but it's getting on my nerves in bumper to bumper traffic.

Yep, I feel it frequently - even coasting with light braking prior to making a turn.

Downshifts are definitely not smooth.

kannibul 09-23-2009 08:14 PM

I've not noticed anything.

Then again, I'm generally either acellerating, maintaining or braking. No coasting... :)

It's just the car shifting...nothing to really worry about.

BanningZ 09-23-2009 11:20 PM

Pretty standard with a lot of cars I've driven.

To look on an upside, at least the Z is letting you know its there. Nothing worse than a car you can't feel. :D

zman1910 09-23-2009 11:55 PM

I've noticed that it's more prominent in foreign cars than american cars. At lease that's my experience. Doesn't really bother me either way...

Usually big engine, with big C.C.will have higher engine braking than 4 cyls engine.

awesomez 09-24-2009 09:30 AM

Yep I notice it, not every time though. It's normal. It's a little worse in 370Z than in most other cars I have driven.

dszombiex 09-24-2009 09:53 AM

It generally happens when the car downshifts from 4rth gear to 3rd. I dunno why 3rd engine brakes so much.

chief_Roka 09-26-2009 11:06 AM

If I remember correctly from my four 1 hour test driives... lol its like the car stops itself harder than u do during deceleration? If that's wat u mean? I think its normal. It felt like the engine was braking as u were braking with the car. I thought it was cool n made the car feel like to have the behaviors of a manual. :)
I'm sure there are owners out there who put thousands of miles on the car who may corect me if I'm wrong? But from my app 250miles of experience... lol. That's what I got from the test drives.

The 6 speed auto in my Mini does it too and the trans is Japanese...

kenchan 09-26-2009 07:26 PM

give it a tad bit of throttle when it engages the lower gear.

same thing on the synchro-rev match on the MT's when letting the machine rev-match
on the downshifts. unless you're braking hard the gearbox bounces you around because
there's no throttle.

billydsz 09-26-2009 08:42 PM

I've noticed it and I love it. If you're coasting you're probably stopping or slowing down anyway. It's just doing what you want it to do. The Z reads the drivers mind lol. Seriously though if you want to maintain speed in a coast put it in neutral or give it a little gas. Higher HP engines will brake more than regular car engines.

tzgq2m 09-26-2009 09:52 PM

I had been thinking this was a positive....

The AT is just down shifting for you after you let your foot off the gas.. that way when you accelerate again, it's just ready and waiting to explode forward... i mean, the trans is pretty much just begging you accelerate again. god, it's pretty much the whole reason i bought the AT... and if you don't accelerate, and end up breaking... well then it doesn't really matter. IMHO, this just isn't the car to coast in, it wants to be ridden hard.

Yeah the 7AT is little more edgy. The shifts are a more solid at times depending on how you're driving. It's actually one of the things I like about the car. Could we say that its a slush box without being too slushy? Refinement can go too far in my opinion where the mechanics of a car become so masked and hidden that the ride becomes too quiet, too cushy, too smooth, simply numbing and boring. Definitely not the 370z.

My gf actually drives a g37 sedan and I had to explain to her what was going on. She had never been in a car that applied engine breaking(her previous car was a 2003 corolla). I had to reassure her that there was nothing "broken" with her car. It's interesting because it seems a lot of companies are changing over to this. I have a 2002 bmw x5 which does not do this..But my mothers 2009 bmw x5 does. As does my fathers 2008 bmw 650i.

Put it in manual mode and go hard it just loves to be driven and when changing down manually ,blip, blp, blp the rev matching capabilities are truly inspiring I have to say
