Operation 370z

Hello all, this may be a long post. However, it's been years in the making and I am ecstatic! This will be a thread where I track my progress of buying my Z. I plan to purchase it in Sept/October and have a battle plan.

Background

In 2003 I was only around the age of 13 but I will never forget the first time I saw a Z. I was at a snowball stand and a red 350z pulled up at the stand. I remember thinking the 350z was the most elegant looking car I had ever laid eyes on. I don't know why but I always thought of the 350 the car to have. Shortly after seeing this car I started to save money I would make on the side for this car in my future. Fast forward 2 years and all the money I had saved, had to be spent on life as Katrina destroyed where I was from and money had to come out saving and help my family. I remember thinking I would eventually get back to saving but with the family needing a new income it never did happen. Fast forward a couple of years, and I start my own business. Finally got some play money and I go test drive a 350z. I loved it! It was the first time I had drove a Z and everything about it lived up to my dreams. Simplistic but yet met every need I was desiring. I started on my paper work and called my insurance, and well since I live in New Orleans and am male between the ages of 18-25 the insurance was $480 without the car note and deemed it as a lost cause. Fast forward to the current day and I have 2 jobs and a wife but no kids. I have a car but she needs a new car and I find this to be a window in my life I have yet to have. I may FINALLY be able to buy the car of my dreams. I know I can afford a base but since I wont have money to mod it and whatnot I would really like to reach for a Nismo.

For those who hate walls of text. TL:DR - THIS MAN NEED A Z

The Plan

Now I am almost 100% sure I can afford the base 370z but I work really hard and long hours. I want to reward my self so I am shooting for the stars and hoping I land some where close. So their is 2 dealerships I have been watching for months now. I have been tracking their lots as they both have 2014 Nismos.

This Nissan Dealership <-- has 4x 2014 Nismo 370s that have been sitting on their lot now for over 2 months. I have kept track of this dealership, watching over these Zs. When the 2015 drops I am thinking about waiting a month or two and whichever one is left, trying to bargain for it. If all 4 of the Nismos are left then I feel I may have even more of a bargaining tool. The kicker here is the colors. While I love white/black the red Nismo looks so beautiful.

This is where this dealership comes into play. They have been having this red Nismo on the lot for about the same amount of time if not a little longer. I am also considering this car as well, however I have heard this dealership is hard to work with at times from a few local friends.

The Conclusion

This thread will be me tracking the purchase and sharing my thoughts and experiences. After all, I have been waiting over half my life to join the Z team and I may finally have the chance. Until then I am going to work as hard as my marriage will allow and save money. I also made a GoFundMe370z page but I am quite embarrassed to share it. Can't blame a man for trying! Thanks for listening to my crazy talk. Shall update soon with a test drive.

Have you thought about a pre-owned? I picked up a 2010 touring , with just under 8000 miles on it last November. It cost less than a new base model. It took me 2 months to find it because I wanted white with persimion (sp) interior.

Dirk McGurck 07-28-2014 08:31 AM

I would look at used. I got a 2009 Touring with Sport and Nav, lightly modded, for $26k.

NoLaKrewe 07-28-2014 08:54 AM

I have thought a lot about used cars but I kind of have a thing against used. I know it's cheaper and 100% more affordable but the thing is, I can't bring myself to do it. I had a Banshee 4 wheeler and I raced that thing to hell. Of course when I sold it, I said adult driven for extra cash. Same thing with my civic and if I ever sold my Fj Cruiser I would not say it was a rock crawler. My point is, I don't want a car to pickup someone else's wear and tear. Now I may sound ignorant but to me the newness is a secruity, it's memories, it what I work hard for. If/when I get a Z, I will have it until I or it dies. When the motor poops out I'm going full chevy motor and other such foolish things. It will be in my life forever and honestly it's worth the investment to me. Same with my Fj when it dies or I flip it. I will just buggy it and make it a tow crawler. In it for the long run.

Thanks for the advice!

There is a possibility you could get what you are looking for. With the 2015 refresh, many will wait for it. Maybe what you should do is go start with them now. Give them a lowball. Tell them you are interested in this Nismo but $xxxxx is what you can afford. Give them your contact information but be willing to walk away. Then, periodically touch base. They don't want those cars hanging around when the new ones hit in the next month. You might be surprised.

Good luck, it's great to realize a dream.

This sounds like a great plan! Thank you so much for the insight. I really want to low ball but don't want to be disrespectful. I might start out at 36. That way it can only go up so much and like you said maybe in a few months it will work out.

NoLaKrewe 07-28-2014 06:32 PM

I emailed the dealership just to start up some of the game. The internet sale man's said he could do any Nismo at MSRP. Or I could wait and pay full for a 15.

im not sure if i'd be giving everything just to "afford" a car. i would sure hope you have
a dd to keep your pride and joy safe from the elements and dumbarse public while
parked at some supermarket.

but that's just me. i never buy a car i cant afford paying cash. GL!

Good for you! If its what you want and been working hard, go for it! Before my Z, i had always bought used, coming out with some good experiences and some bad ones. When i was looking for a Z, i was also looking into used, but a very wise and understanding person(gf) told me: "to hell with it, you work your @ss off everyday, you have no outstanding debts/payments, you deserve it!" how could i say no to that?! My advice: if its your dream car, wait whatever time you have wait, and dont settle for anything that isnt exactly what YOU want, be it the color, trimline, extras, etc! Youve waited long enough. Good luck

mishuko 07-28-2014 08:29 PM

I went for a 2012 370z touring with sports trim a few weeks ago, under 10k miles and still has the new car smell.

To be honest I had a similar experience in terms of seeing the 350z, then in my 4th year seeing a yellow 370z. Can't even remember the trim I just fell in love.

So I decided to get one! Do consider getting a used as you will keep spare cash and dump it into your car =)

Some great advice has already been given, and it certainly sounds as though you have a plan in place. Beyond what's already been said I can only say that you shouldn't be afraid to expand your search. I mean that in a geographic sense. If the dealers nearby aren't willing to work with you, then try your best to find a dealer that will. My Z was a three hour drive away, but it was well worth it.

I found mine about an 1.5 hour drive from the house. It was a CarMax tied to a Nissan dealer.

And the game begins. Nobody I know has paid MSRP, which, by the way, is full price. Seems like invoice or below would be preferred. Especially for a car that is about to be superseded by an update. I like the idea of expanding the search to out of area dealers. I have heard of some going four or five states away. Granted that is East coast states.

Have you test driven it? You should go down there and test drive it, hem and haw a little, sit down and discuss options and when they throw that MSRP at you, tell them, the value just isn't there anymore with the 2015 refresh due to hit their lots any time. Get them to invest just a little time with you and maybe they will start budging of that MSRP barrier. The longer it sits on their lot, the more money they lose.

Have you prequalified for a loan? That will sometimes shake it loose.

Good luck.

jpkirk 07-29-2014 10:03 AM

Have you checked the online buyers websites? I see them list 2014 Nismos for well under MSRP.

There are many 2013 leftover nismos that are selling for 35k otd at my area with sticker close to 45k. Find them on edmunds.com
I agree, wouldn't buy another's mans race toy. Let's be real, no one goes out and buy a Z and drive like a grandma.
