Is trade worth it?

I have a Black base 2010 with 41K miles on it. The local dealer has a Black base 2014 370z with the sports package that he might trade for mine for a $9000 difference.

Earlier he had offered a $9000 difference on a base black 2014 370z and lots of folks here had discouraged me from that trade, saying it is essentially the same car. The sports package comes with the synchromesh, larger wheels and brakes and the spoiler.

My problem is that I am 66, do not have any more sports cars in my future and no other new cars in my money range appeal to me, not the Genesis nor the FRS/Subaru and I do not go for the General Motors or Ford cars, period.

I should just stay put with my car but another year or two and its too late to buy sports cars.

MagmaRed370z 07-23-2014 10:22 AM

Yeah same car but you are gaining led lights on the bumper which is a really nice feature, you are gaining 4 years newer, syncro, 1 inch more on the wheels, and brakes. Plus way less miles which is going to last you longer. If I were you, and you have the extra money to spare ill trade it in. But that's just me....

cigarclifford 07-23-2014 10:24 AM

Take care of what you now have...Maybe a wax and detail will put a stop
to your thoughts. Than again I'm not a real doctor...

ZeeBabar 07-23-2014 10:58 AM

Yup, it gets tougher. You get old, the women do not want you (as you are not rich enough), you are burn't out at the job but cannot afford to retire, you no longer have interest in shopping for clothes and other stuff so you think of your bucket list of cars and you get realistic. Since 2008, in order, I have traded in a 2003 Toyota Celica GTS for a 2004 Mazda RX8 and then traded it (maintenance issues) in for a 350Z which I traded for a 2009 Mazda RX8 (too low gas mileage, small gas tank, filling up every other day) and that for a 2010 Mazda Miata PRHT and finally my current car which I like the best of all. So, the only trade left for my last is for a newer better version of the 370Z.

You might look at all the great parts listed for sale from the 370Z forum members.

Jordo! 07-23-2014 11:22 AM

If you have 9 grand to burn and you like it, why not?

I'd see what your car is worth on KBB as a private sale. If the difference between that and the trade deal is close, sure, go for it.

synolimit 07-23-2014 11:30 AM

I traded a 09 WRX for an 11. Same everything but the wider fenders and rear quarters. All my parts swapped, I saved about $100 a month from interest rate and paying off a trade in negative equity in 24 months and they way I looked at it I paid about $2500 difference and got a brand new motor installed, new wheels, new tires, a new clutch, new transmission, new fluids, washed, detailed, brakes and rotors job, new bolts with no rust, new paint job from grey to white and went from 36k chassis to 5 miles. To me I thought it was worth it for $2500 since almost nothing on that list was only $2500 to get.

njobe89 07-23-2014 11:42 AM

is your car paid off? are you saying you would only have to pay $9,000 for a 2014 if you trade in your car or $9,000 on top of what you currently owe? If it's just the $9,000 you would have to pay, i would say pull the trigger. that would only be $150 a month for 60 months.

jpkirk 07-23-2014 11:48 AM

I love that new car smell. At 58 I am thinking the same as you. This is likely my last new car. Just need to take care of it. You know though, Paul Newman was still a hotfoot racer into his 70's so here's to you and many more years of driving enjoyment.

:iagree:

Like I said in the other thread. You can buy 90% of the parts that make up the sport package for less than 9K. Especially if you buy them used from other forum members. Tons of people want to sell their OEM stuff once they replace the parts with aftermarket.

Hell, I've got the sport package suspension setup from when I installed coilovers. I've also got a set of 2013 sport wheels that I need to sell as well. For the diff, just buy a Quaife.

Felix 808 07-23-2014 01:13 PM

Well it really depends on what you want from the newer model. $9k can buy a heck of a lot of mods & add ons for your current Z. It all depends on what makes sense to you ;)

jpkirk 07-23-2014 01:21 PM

Can't buy SRM after the fact that I know of if you want the 6MT. That SRM is killer. I never practiced enough heel/toe downshifts. I hear the AT is very good though. I was on the fence about that. Bought the 6MT since it is not a daily driver.

njobe89 07-23-2014 01:24 PM

i never use the srm, call me weird but i don't like it :/

jpkirk 07-23-2014 01:29 PM

SRM was what kept me coming back to the Z. I looked at Camaro SS and Mustang GT with all that 400+ HP. And I like the looks/performance of the Camaro SS with 1LE package. SRM kept pulling me back. Thank God it did, I'd have to kill myself for joining the masses of Camaro's on the road.

Z=unique

I guess the question for the OP is if you think you are missing anything without the sport package. Are you interested in the performance improvements? Are you autocrossing, tracking, or some such? Then I could really see the desire to have the sport package. If not, take that $9K and go on some driving tours. Yellowstone, Glacier, Acadia, Grand Canyon. Some cool stuff to see.

Just saying.

Good luck in your decision!

Magic Bus 07-23-2014 02:26 PM

OP, I'd do it. If you love the Z and plan on keeping it for a long time, why not? A $9,000 depreciation on a 4 year old car with 41k miles, plus getting an upgraded new version, sounds like a win to me. Good luck on your decision!

^^ says the guy that lives in paradise island and LOL'ing at everyone here.. :shakes head:

:rofl2:

Davey 07-23-2014 03:50 PM

I wouldn't do it. If anything I'd wait for the redesigned Z. I'm kind of in the same boat (though not as old) as far a what I'm willing to pay for a "toy" car and though I've tried a few others, the Z just seems to suit me pretty well.

Another Old Guy Response!

Hey ZeeBabar, I just did it and I'm 67. Traded my 2012 roadster, for a 2014 black cherry coupe, base w/ sport pkg. AND I'm real happy!
Do it!
Cheers,

Your thought pattern at 57 is perfect... Great color choice as the Black
Cherry paint color is awesome........... Than again I'm not a real doctor.....

Fountainhead 07-23-2014 07:17 PM

At 54 this will probably be the last sports car I buy, but I'm in good health (now) and hopefully can keep driving it. My wife doesn't really care about getting in and out but she's in good shape too so for now we're enjoying it, but I like it more than my wife does...
OP I'd get the car you liked. Remember, anyone can get more money, but no one ever got more time.
