Can Nissan Beat BMW? 370Z vs. 135i

370z 12-26-2008 10:27 AM

Yes, it Can !

SnakeBitten 12-26-2008 12:10 PM

Well the 370z is the clear winner in the looks dept. The 135 always looked like a 3 series with Downs Syndrome. Like the performance but couldnt live with the looks. One homely looking BMW.

msl82 12-26-2008 12:41 PM

Nice!!!

I wish someone can post this video in BMW forum websites..

Here's the thread on a 135i forum. 370Z vs. 135i - BMW 1 Series Coupe Forum / 1 Series Convertible Forum (M1 / tii / 135i / 128i / Coupe / Cabrio / Hatchback) (BMW E82 E88 128i 130i 135i)

It's a pretty good discussion....I posted in that thread under a different user name. Of course just like a Z forum will have bias, so will the BMW forum.

Crash 12-26-2008 04:55 PM

How fantastic is that... I'm in an American Muscle club and they HATE that I'm buying a 370z. But lets face it, it's a better car.

frost 12-26-2008 05:38 PM

So, Zed is 5 grand cheaper, comes with more standard options, and "crushes" the bmw on the skidpad. Sold.

Crash 12-26-2008 05:39 PM

Well, it doesn't exactly CRUSH the BMW, but it does do a good job making it look bad! :) $ for $, the Z is an amazing buy.

sensi09 12-26-2008 05:47 PM

Keep in mind that the 135i comes equipped with just 215/40/18s and 245/35/18 runflat tires. So it is at a disadvantage to begin with in terms of braking and skidpad numbers.

Crash 12-26-2008 05:49 PM

Yeah... True. All it takes is a tire change that the tables turn. But the same can be said about the Z. Honestly, those tires the sport package comes with aren't all that awesome. They're being hyped.. But put a good pair of NT-01s or MT Street tires on it and it's nothing but savory goodness.

o0javi0o 12-26-2008 06:21 PM

easy

So they spend another couple grand to equal zed in handling? Now they are 8k+ for the same car.

Crash 12-26-2008 11:31 PM

Not really... Good tires only cost about 160 bucks/tire mounted and balanced. My 555DRs were $154/tire. Those on the bmw would do beat the crap out of the tires on the sport package... :(

However, in the end, it still comes down to value. Even if the performance was matched on all levels, the style, cost and standard features of the Z out-weighs the BMW by far!

I was thinking tires plus rims, since the bimmer's are too skinny.

Crash 12-26-2008 11:40 PM

Nah... 235 Drag radials will grip better than 275 touring tire.

Evolved 12-27-2008 11:53 AM

I can't see too many 135 owners running DR's on their car, especially a daily driver. Regular summer tires would be a bit more realistic.

Crash 12-27-2008 04:53 PM

Here in Los Angeles, we run on DRs all the time. Some of the guys have the two sets of tires, but - for instance - we have some guys that run on DRs ALL the time because we race on a daily basis.

The guys here that drive BMWs will often run on DRs.

It seems like the only thing that makes the bimmer worth the extra money is the "comfort" factor. If you remove that with nosier tires, they might as well save five large and get a Z

Crash 12-27-2008 06:09 PM

Dunno about that. I find a sports car to be A LOT more comfy than ANY luxury car I've ever been in. I was born to drive sports cars. I HATE the feel of luxury cars.

EDIT: to clarify, I like the seats the grip, and are lower to the ground.

o0javi0o 12-28-2008 12:27 AM

Maintenance will be more cheaper, i assume, than a bimmer. important factor to be considered.

Crash 12-28-2008 12:42 AM

^^^ Plus BMW name... A headlight went out on my friends '01 3 series and AutoZone's price for the headlights were $58!!!

My HID bulbs on my Z are like $8, and the Halogens I had on my Trans Am were like $14. That's just crazy!!! And she had just basic every day lights!

Nissan FTMFW!

sensi09 12-28-2008 06:35 AM

BMW does have it's 4 year/50K mile warranty, which covers pretty much everything, from changes to brakes and anything that might go wrong with the car. This warranty can be extended to 6yr/100K.

Well the 135i does come equipped with runflats, which are not supposed to help ride quality.

G37Sam 12-28-2008 09:03 AM

love how everyone on the 1 series forum is saying its not a fair comparison since 1 series is a 4-seater? really??? good luck squishing 4 people in there
theyre gonna have to have their legs chopped off first!

Yep, I know, but my point is, when this warranty gets expired, if anything happens on the BMW, electrical problems, engine, tire, oil changes, etc... then it is going to be a negative in you in long terms.
I had a lease in a BMW X3 with Sport M Package and I had electrical problems with tire pressure sensors (My mother in law M6 had this problem too). I had problems with the exhaust system, rattling noises, they changed the whole exhaust system.
Also had a ticking noise in the engine which the could never fix during the life of the lease. Anyway I was pleased with their service, they put a lot of attention in customers.
All of this compared to my experience with my 350z (I got it 4 month later) I haven't gotten any problems yet, besides a recall on the clutch (Clutch slave cylinder replaced). I do have to pay for the oil changes, but is not a pain in the a*s. No electrical problems yet, etc.

This is the point that I am trying to get. that at long term, if the car is not a lease or you have plans to stay with the car for more than 5, 6, 7 yrs, maybe it is going to cost you big bucks at long term, without pushing the car to the limits.
Maybe I wasn't lucky enough and my mother in law too, but you know.
But they still are great cars but with many little stuff to be observed.

:p my point of view in maintenance

Alexus 12-28-2008 10:20 AM

^^
Bad things typically happen to your car after the warranty has expired. It's not mystery that BMW parts are expensive and that those 6-piston brakes on the front of that Bimmer aren't going to go for cheap once they're done.

Maintenance on a Nissan is cheap and that's one of the main reasons I'm sitting out my next car buy and waiting for the 370Z to come out. I would have bought an Infiniti G37 coupe... but I'm waiting.

The extended warranty itself is also much more expensive with BMWs.

I like bimmers, don't get me wrong. But yeah, I sat in the 1-series at the LA Auto Show, and I had an average-height man get in the driver's seat ahead of me and adjust the seat to his liking. When he was finished, my feet were trapped, and my knees were almost in my chest (I'm 6'2" 180#). That, plus the weight of the car, plus the looks of the car in person, plus the price, plus the lack of personal gravitation to the car, totally changed my mind, and turned off my "need" for a 135i (though I still like the car).

The same day, I checked out the 370Z, and had the opposite reaction. Instant "me wanty".

I agree 100%

I thought the 135i would be awesome, until I saw one in person and sat in the back seat. The back seats are smaller than the G35/37 ones. My head was hitting the glass and my knees were smashed into the front seat. If I really wanted a BMW I would get the 335 coupe over a 135 any day. A couple grand more for much better looks and comfort.

I think any enthusiast can recognize that the Z is a true sports car while the 1 series will always be a sporty luxury car.. not quite the same.

Crash 12-28-2008 06:59 PM

I could care less about back seats. I'm not a limo driver, and I don't shuttle people around.

+1. If you're not happy with the room in the back seat, you can always walk.

Crash 12-29-2008 12:33 AM

LOL! If it wasn't for the fact that I don't want to scratch the interior, I'd let someone ride in the trunk if they were desperate enough for a ride just for the humor in it... But I get attached to my cars quick, so that won't happen. :)

I find that I get to shuttle people around a lot less with the two-seater, such as when a couple coworkers want to go out for lunch. "Sorry, I only have one other seat."
There was a time when two good looking coworkers were wanting to go to lunch and I suggested one sit on the others lap though. ;)

Crash 12-30-2008 02:01 AM

^^^ Another plus for the 2 seater! :D

CrownR426 12-31-2008 10:33 AM

I'm not that suprised at this one...
The 370z is clearly the winner when your talking about bang for the buck.
Growing up around cars almost all my life in a bmw family i've learned to appreciate bmw's fine craftmenship.
Being a 19 year old I've been very privileged, being able to drive some decent cars.
I find myself asking what do I really want?
Then I find myself asking, If I can afford the mods and parts later on.(Unlike most teens driving sports cars, I pay for my own **** and it ain't easy doing it!)
Honestly it's not the brand, it's the car and driver.
I'd take the 370z anyday[:
Don't shoot me bmw lovers!
<3
