I don't know what's happened in the last 25 pages, but you have no business buying any new car over 20k with payment plans so long, and being upside down in payments. You are way in over your head

he's planning to keep this car for a long while, so rolling in negative equity from a current trade that is already worth less than it's value is just...

Rolling around in negative equity, long payment plans with huge payments is why the economy is in the crapper (on a bigger scale, though).

OP, 72 months? $550 a month? really? good god. I'd think twice before you bought a $32,000 car for $40,000. If you think it's worth that much, then go for it

Inspector71 09-21-2009 10:26 AM

In over my head

I considered whether or not this is going from bad to worse. I am weighing the fact that I am still driving my 86' Rx7 because I like it and took good care of it as I do all my vehicles including my 66 Sport Fury which is getting a body make-over. I am also considering the fact that I will always be upside down in my Pathfinder as it depreciates each year. That was not a huge problem as I take care of it as well. It is sitting in the garage with 23K miles and looks brand new...bright shiny and red. I am also middle aged and could retire from my teaching job in 5 years. I might go longer but once I retire, I doubt I will be buying anything too expensive so this might be it for me (who wants to be a high school teacher at age 65?..or older???). These are the pro's but there are cons I am weighing as well. I have submitted a credit app through Fusz (nice folks by the way) and they will give it their best shot. The one I drove almost two weeks ago is still here and I still have my current payment of $644 a month on the Pathfinder.

As a 17 year teaching veteran, I am very lucky to have a good job that is somewhat insulated from what politicians are doing to the economy although I do worry about my retirement.

I congratulate you on keeping it so long, thats some good stuff, and can understand why you want something new. But 72 month are for people that live in the ghetto, not teachers ;)

You can fix that by paying it off. If you are unable to do that then you can increase your payments

I've just scanned through several hundred comments on this thread, and don't think I've seen anyone else come right out and say what I'm about to.

Don't buy the Z. Period.

It's a wonderful car. But this is not your moment. If you plan for it, you could be a lot more ready in 2011 or 2012... and would have a car newer than any of ours on the board right now.

You're not ready financially, you're not ready because you haven't memorized all the specs and option packages like we have, you're not ready because it's a bad fit in your family and your vocation, you're not ready because you'll be paying big consumer interest at a time the Fed is giving banks a 0% funding rate. You're not ready because you haven't worked on a new car purchase with enough dealers to improve your buying/bargaining technique.

There's another car coming out next month that will catch your eye. Maybe your wife will be more approachable on that. I wouldn't recommend an Altima, but I might recommend a Hyundai Genesis coupe (if you can't wait to trade).

No jokes on this reply. We had a string of about a hundred comments that weren't anything about the car, but lifestyle... that's plenty of Humor, of you call it that.

nogoodname 09-21-2009 08:59 PM

i already mentioned wait for it....lol

a Genesis coupe isnt the same at all.....

kenchan 09-21-2009 09:45 PM

jginnane- nnn...ive been saying from the beginning to sell the pathfinder and save up a year.

and do it right the first time and get the Z, not some hyundai. you'll end up buying the Z anyway later on. save up, get wat you really want. no substitutes. otherwise you're just wasting your money.

Sorry I missed your post in all the "lifestyle" chatter.

No, a Hyundai isn't the same. But it's relatively affordable for where this person is at this moment in life -- and maybe, just maybe, that's good Enough.

I'd be real happy if he could comfortably swing the Z, but it looks like he's right at the edge of being able to do it. There's no safety margin -- which he needs for the thousand other things in life beyond having a nice car. I don't want to see his dream car showing up in our "trading post" forum in six months or a year because some random unexpected thing happened.

And -- do you think he's even budgeted routine stuff like brakes and tires? The Z isn't an exotic car by any stretch, but the treadwear rating on OEM treads for both base and sport models says you'll be buying new shoes before 2 years (24K). Most of us will gulp and take it -- I know my base/touring will go to Goodyear F1 Eagle A/S, when the time comes. People with the sport package will pay quite a bit more. But if you're in this fellow's place, you don't have an extra thousand floating around for something so routine and obvious like that.

Inspector71 09-22-2009 08:59 AM

For HotRod Pilot

I appreciate your frankness. I did some checking and it is not $554 for 72 months but for 84 months. Give or take, that comes out to around $42,210.00 dollars for a $31,000 dollar car...a 7 year loan. I could pay it off early by sending in more than the payment but I need to really think about this.

Inspector71 09-22-2009 09:05 AM

jginnane

Thank you very much for an excellent post. Naturally it is not what I want to hear but need to read. I am definitely reflecting on what you have said and having second thoughts about whether the time is right. Again, I really appreciate you taking the time to offer very wise advice. Also, I too was wondering about the cost of tires and so forth. The Pathfinder is in such good condition it looks brand new. I baby everything I own which is why my Rx7 is going strong and its an 86...

E-Licious 09-22-2009 03:29 PM

$554 x 84 months = $46,536. It's also equal to "not worth it"

FuszNissan 09-22-2009 03:44 PM

I would have to agree, even though I am the one trying to sell you the car. It's not the right time. I would wait, until you are in a better situation.

You know there just comes a point in time where you need to do something for you. Get the car as you have earned it even if you spend a little more than you want. Life needs to be enjoyed at an age when you can enjoy it.

Mine is 72mo at $642/mo.

Guess what? I'm still paying off debts, and snowballing to the next debt. I have another credit card (due to pay off in March), then a civic I refinanced (august) then the Z, with a couple of years...end up paying the Z off in 3 years or less.

kenchan 11-06-2009 11:55 AM

Oh you finally got it. :D. Congrats.
