Minor thing...gas cap tether

Gas cap tether - anyone remove it?

I've found that if you use the little built in loop for it and hang it off the fuel door, it still hits the fender - eventually that spot will become an eyesore (black car...) - so, anyone removed it?

Minor gripe, just wondering if I'm being overboard about it...like everything else ;)

The other day after washing the car the gas door lid didn't want to open.Kept tapping it lightly with my finger so to not damage. After about ten minutes of playing it finally opened. Was in the panic mode for a couple of mintes.
I can see some greasy oversized mechanic at the dealers crawling thru my car to fix. What a nightmare that would be.
Must say this Z is full of suprises!

I find it useful not perfect but what is.

Benibiker 08-30-2009 09:37 PM

If you remove the tether where will you put the gas cap? In the roof? On the pump? Hold it in you hand the whole time? Before you know it you'll be missing a gas cap...

Put it in your pants.

Just take the whole removing the gas cap thing out of the equation and put THIS on. You never have to remove the cap and worry about it hitting the paint, or loosing it.

lol that is too much lol

I cut that tether off the first day I owned the car. We can't pump our own gas here, and I didn't want the gas pumping moron hanging it against the side of the car like they always do.

I've not really looked at it enough to figure out if there's a "clean" way to remove it short of clipping it - is that what you did or something else?

As for "where" to put the gas cap - set it on top of the gas pump, that's what I've always done with non-tethered caps...

i wonder if this would throw a CEL...

i drove a ford hybrid that had this type of filler cap and it is pretty convenient...

If you hang it off the gas door its far enough away to not touch the paint...

Yeah and then add to the gas stations collection of gas caps.. :rofl2:

ADmaster71690 09-01-2009 12:13 AM

All of my cars so far have had non-tethered gas caps... and there has always been a little metal holder on the inside of the gas door. The cap fits perfectly there. Don't think the Z would have this though...

Of course...If yours is like that, and mine isn't, then I must be a liar. :icon14:

semtex 09-01-2009 10:30 AM

Mine doesn't touch either. BUT, I will say this -- it depends on the way you hang it. It's very hard to explain, but the first time I filled up, it touched and I was like 'wtf is this crap design? I don't want my cap touching the car'. But then I played around with it and discovered that if I hung it a little differently, it wouldn't touch. Try playing around with it a little. If you can't get it right, I'll take some pics.

I dunno, I just took some scissors and clipped it short at both ends. I don't like hanging the cap on the gas door because it's so flimsy and fragile.

Here's a close up too...

I'd guess that at 1mm without measuring. Easily close enough that when hanging it it'll bump the car.

frost 09-05-2009 06:30 PM

I ripped mine off, I don't like hanging it on the car. I put it on top of the pump.

It's obvious your car is special (or they redesigned the tether for later VINs. Mine was built 550 or so units before yours)

My tether hook is 1/4" from where it joins the cap.

I second this notion.. mine has never hit or sat on the quarter panel.

That was my thought when I saw the pic you posted, your loop is much closet to the cap.

Probably a case of different-sourced part.
