Nissan Le Mans Engine

Not sure if this has been posted yet or not.. But while on my lunch break here at work I came across this article on Jalopnik. In it, it talked about the new Le Mans engine Nissan will be running at the 24 hours of Le Mans. Long story short itll be 1.5-Liter turbocharged 3 cylinder motor called the DIG-T R putting out 400HP/280TQ...And will only weigh 88 pounds :yum:...Probably will never be in production but still a pretty cool little motor.

heres the article: Nissan's New Le Mans Engine Has 400 HP And Can Fit In Your Hands

Drex 01-27-2014 01:23 PM

next up 150z? :D

how much weight would this engine save over a vq37vhr?

cooltoy 01-27-2014 01:33 PM

Was it used in Daytona 24 h?

SmokeEater27 01-27-2014 01:41 PM

I dont believe so, because it says that they will be making the debut at the Le Mans race.

im guessing our motors must be anywhere from 500-600 lbs but I could most definitely be way off. I tried finding an exact number on nissans website but nothing came up.

So this is the engine to drive the ZEOD entry for LM ??

This is a research and development engine for racing applications, so no, you won't be seeing this in a Juke anytime soon.

yea this along with the eletrical motor...Nissan said that the electrical motor will run the car for just one lap for each one hour interval of the 24 hours. Lets see how it turns out for Nissan.

kenchan 01-27-2014 03:31 PM

everyone needs quiet time. even the drivers during a race. electric motor for one hr it is.

but the article did go on to quote a nissan rep as saying that this engine will be used for research purposes for a future engine...hmmm, perhaps for the iDX that will be out in a couple years?

This suckers totally electrical, we just need a nuclear reaction to generate the 1.21 gigawats.

mang, that would suck to see mushroom clouds during a race... :ugh:

Cmike2780 01-27-2014 04:38 PM

Cool little engine. It's basically the size of a rotary with none of the drawbacks. I wouldn't mind seeing this thing in the ID-X.

you just don't go into a store and buy plutonium..

Jordo! 01-27-2014 05:31 PM

I could see a variant of this going into that Blade car if it goes into production.

Neat!

EZT 01-27-2014 06:30 PM

This is impressive technology for sure.

400hp out of a 1.5L 3 cylinder... Good thing it's being developed for a 24h race, becaue that's about how long it's going to last.:rofl2:

gomer_110 01-27-2014 10:24 PM

I say take two of these, tie them together and voila 3.0L twin turbo motor for the next Z. Of course I'm just dreaming here.

Seriously, at 88 lbs if it has any problems, Nissan can possibly make it a quick, disposable swap in & swap out motor for the race.

I think that's the coolest part. The leap wouldn't be that difficult to create a compact, lightweight 6-cyl monster producing 800hp.

Make one engine power the front and one power the rear, if only FWD or RWD is needed then the other engine can go into standby mode to reduce fuel and get better MPG!

Lol, all at the price tag of $300k!

Lol, it wouldn't be close after emissions and whatnot, but I do like that thought

How about one for each wheel!!! 6.0 liter, 1,600hp sounds perfect and AWD!

seriously though, if they mass produce this puppy, how badass would it be powering a lightweight track car like an Ariel Atom.

New GT-R?

SmokeEater27 01-28-2014 09:53 AM

Yea like DE said, as far as price goes with this being the latest and greatest in terms of motor technology theres more then likely going to be a hefty price tag following it. But give it some time and like everything else it will come down to reasonable pricing for us everyday folk, Hopefully . Who remembers when the first ever DVD players came out those things were expensive as all hell. But I would honestly be happy with a VQ motor that could put down to the wheels 400HP and be in the same weight class as Formula 1 motors at about 200 pounds which is relatively light compared to what we have now. In the great words of JP from the movie Angels in the outfield..."It Could Happen" :rofl2:

Haboob 01-28-2014 05:37 PM

Pretty snazzy if you ask me.

Minus the electric part.

andrzej641104 02-02-2014 03:25 PM

J understood that is the petrol engine.
