Radar Question

So i'm in the market for a radar detector. I was looking at the Escort Passport Max radar and Laser detector. Anyone have it and can share their experience with it? Is it really worth the money or is there something else out there better than this?

Drex 01-14-2014 01:17 PM

many threads on this, but it comes down to the escort max vs valentine one. can't really go wrong with either.

thanks. I just wanted to know more on the escort passport max unit itself. I'm reading reviews and some users are giving it a 1 star which concern me. Most likely i will pull the trigger on the Escort Max.

NissanFan 01-14-2014 01:42 PM

chances are those are escort haters. :shakes head:

i prefer my V1 for the arrows. detectors just beeping with no directionality is like a baby crying not being able to tell wat's wrong with him. :shakes head: at least point to where the problem is.

NissanFan 01-14-2014 01:43 PM

my dingaling wet
or mouth dry
or tummy hungry or aching

instead of waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!! :crying: (escort)

stfu!

DOM_370z 01-14-2014 02:06 PM

hahaha ok fair enough...lol

Read the full review, and the knowledge base of the reviewer to see if they even know what they're talking about before calling their review credible.

Problem is people become fixated on the arrows and don't scan actively, which hinders reaction time anyways, negating the point of the arrows. :icon17:

That's where you should just adopt the all encompassing policy of:

The biggest mistake is to go on this or other radar detector type forums is that they are fanatics. There are many people who just buy a radar detector and it serves them well for years but if you read up, these idiots compare one radar detector with another, buy the latest that comes out, drive with two detectors hooked up and then say one is better for this or that.

I have the max and it works quite well. before it, I had another one, an old Whistler that served me well enough for years. Unless every time you get on the street you speed and also have a bit of paranoia about you, any decent radar and a good pair of eyes along with some info on where cops generally hang out (overpasses, medians, ramps etc.) and you will be fine.

Well just to update the thread, I ended up going with the Escort Passport Max. Its out for delivery today - we'll see how it is, I'll try it out this weekend. Hopefully it will come to good use.

DEpointfive0 01-16-2014 10:49 AM

I have the max. It's range is more than the 9500iX. The only kinda crappy part was that you should update it as soon as you get it and you have to play with the settings for it to not be annoying.
Worst part is that it isn't as loud as the 9500iX. So if you're BLASTING some Jethro Tull... I don't know if you're going to hear the radar detector

DEpointfive0 01-16-2014 10:50 AM

Sorry I didn't see/reply earlier. If it was in the other thread I might have replied...
And/or if you went through the thread a bit you would've known I have one so you could've PM'd me

so it has no arrows and you can't hear it? :ugh2:

kinda like that hatch gate weight. just worthless hunk you paid for... ? :eekdance:

Thanks mate. I did read a bit the other thread guess I might have skipped over your post.

I have 45 days to return it - I still havent opened the box it was just delivered and i'm at work now. I'll see how it works out for a couple of days... if I dont think its best, I"ll return it and get the V1. Thanks for the info on updating it right away and adjusting the settings. I'm going to play with it later today.

The arrows are so misleading. Yeah, maybe if you PASS a cop then you see the arrows change and you go back to speeding because you think you passed the only cop...

That's why my buddy got a ticket and I didn't. I had my Max on spec or meter mode. Saw a signal before the V1, slowed, then passed the cop, then he started booking it again and I saw that a different frequency was coming in... And knew there was another cop... My phone call didn't get to him in time.

And you CAN hear it. At 100MPH windows down smoking a cigarette while blasting JT, you won't hear it at all and with the 9500 maybe a bit. It's quieter, but as long as you aren't deaf or as deaf as me, you should be good to go
Advantage is that the Max is better than the 9500 at taking out unwanted signals. A feature the V1 cannot do at all

Um, the V1 has 3 different signal filter settings that work just fine.

Also, Valentine updates it's circuitry when the need arises. You can go on their site and make sure you have the latest tech by entering your serial #...then send in your V1 and have it updated if you don't.

Do others offer that option? I'm unaware if they do or not.

I've owned my V1 for 10 yrs and used it mostly when riding my CBR1000RR in the twisty roads of the Angeles Forrest. My V1 has never let me down.
It has paid for itself many times over.

DEpointfive0 01-16-2014 02:37 PM

^Escort does something similar. You update firmware with options and crap. Also you can pay to have updates for red light and speed cameras

The signal filtering is not what I'm talking about, you still get false alarms. The 9500 and the Max lock them out.
And the V1 is like 20 years old. I know tried and true is good and why reinvent the wheel but shít, times have changed

sounds like your friend just didn't (or doesn't) know how to use his V1. :ugh:

kinda like that one guy blaming his MT car even though it was him that sucked at driving MT in general.

XwChriswX 01-16-2014 03:27 PM

The Escort models are GPS enabled so they can lock out false signals. That's what DE is referring to. The V1, not being GPS Enabled, cannot do this based on location. I believe it does it based on signal band and strength of signal right?

NissanFan 01-16-2014 03:31 PM

(im just joking around...)

hummmmm.... let's see wat this button does... :icon17: :ugh:

Well, as I said, I've used my V1 mostly on twisty canyon roads and I run the V1 wide open (any hit up there is likely the law) the V1 has never let me down.

In full logic mode 'L', I've never had a problem with false alarms.

I don't run it at all in town (in L.A.) I did use it once driving to Vegas and it worked like a charm then too.

Whatever works for you is best.
