Acronym Section?

Hey Guys,
Being a military member, I am very familiar with many acronyms....but....I am trying to get smart on some of the stuff and not versed in the acronyms...OK, so i figured out a few CAI, cold are intake for example, but there are others that are not intuitive to me such as HFE. Is there a list of acronyms on the site? Thanks!

Chris

Lots of these are abbreviations and not acronyms. Acronyms for words that can be pronounced. (E.g. LASER, RADAR, or NASA). LOL, CBE, and the like are just plain- o abbreviations.

I really hate to nit-pick, but you're wrong.

Acronym

Acronyms don't have to spell a word.

Pronounceability is optional for most definitions of acronym I can find.

Some acronyms that are pronounceable go on to become full-fledged words, eg, laser is now considered by many to be a word instead of an acronym and not capitalized.

The word you're thinking of is initialisms. That said, acronym used to have to be a pronounceable word but has come to mean the same as initialism as that's how it's used most often these days.

Acronym

Acronyms don't have to spell a word.

They do; if you are to use the word in its strictest sense. You can decompose the root words.

Websters might have acquiesced to common (incorrect) usage, but Webster's is crap.

SouthArk370Z 12-19-2013 09:46 AM

Here's a few that are pretty common on this site:
6MT - 6-spped Manual Transmission
7AT - 7-speed Automatic Transmission
ABS - Anti-lock Braking System
AC, A/C - Air Conditioning
BCM - Body Control Module. Controls most non-drivetrain functions.
CAI - Cold Air Intake
CAN - Controller Area Network. The car's Ethernet.
CEL - Check Engine Light
DD - Daily Driver
DIY - Do It Yourself
DTC - Diagnostic Trouble Code. What the car thinks is wrong. Read with an ODB scanner.
E85 - 85% Ethanol (15% gasoline)
ECM - Engine Control Module (sometime ECU)
ESCL - Electronic Steering Column Lock (see SLU). Lots of failures on early models.
FI - Forced Induction, Fuel Injection
FSM - Factory Service Manual. If you plan on working on your Z, this is the bible.
HID - High Intensity Discharge
HU - HeadUnit
HVAC - Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning
JDM - Japanese Domestic Market
LSD - Limited Slip Differential
MAF - Mass Air Flow
NVH - Noise, Vibration, and Harshness
OBD - On-Board Diagnostics.
OEM - Original Equipment Manufacturer
OTD - Out The Door. Total price of car.
RPM - Revolutions Per Minute
SES - Service Engine Soon light
SLU - Steering Lock Unit (see ESCL)
SRS - Supplemental Restraint System
TCM - Transmission Control Module (automatic)
TPMS - Tire Pressure Monitoring System
TSB - Technical Service Bulletin. Similar to a recall.
TT - Twin Turbo
VDC - Vehicle Dynamic Control
VLSD - Viscous Limited Slip Differential
VVEL - Variable Valve Event and Lift

The GI (General Information) section of the FSM has the official Nissan acronyms/abbrevs. Eg:
FSM Color Codes
B = Black
W = White
R = Red
G = Green
L = Blue
Y = Yellow
LG = Light Green
BR = Brown
OR or O = Orange
P = Pink
PU or V (Violet) = Purple
GY or GR = Gray
SB = Sky Blue
CH = Dark Brown
DG = Dark Green
When the wire color is striped, the base color is given first, followed by the stripe color: Example: L/W = Blue with White Stripe
