Not sure of that (maybe). With a magnet on the pan, however, you could use a larger and stronger magnet that could pull more metal out of suspension. Also, larger surface area would inverse your probability of capture. Plug magnets have a relatively small (point) surface area.

Not sure about filter magnets, stuff that passed through modern filters must be tiny.

Would make an interesting experiment.

Well, I think you're more holding the crap to the wall of the filter so it doesn't clog the filter element. I think either way the amount of metal cars shed isn't much, we just do it because it makes us feel better.
And $2-60 investment on $30-50k isn't much

LOL. Not a bad idea. Such a simple concept. I can see members with magnets from blown JL audio 10W6's on a tiny oil filter. :D

Want some? I use 2 on my oil filter. I haven't cut open an oil filter yet, but I assume it does something, lol

I largely agree. I change cars like some people change underwear (and I don't mean only when they get wrecked), so I'm not too worried about it. It's a bit academic.

I'll probably just go with some neat refrigerator magnets.
