Had the Z towed :(
So here's what happened: Left work, everything was fine, drove about a mile, came up to an intersection and heard a loud metal on metal sound screeching outside my window. I actually thought it was the car next to me so I didn't think much of it. Pulled away and got on the highway, the sound continued and I realized it was my Z. Pulled over right away, and had AAA tow my car to the dealership :crying: I think it might be a wheel bearing. The car drove completely fine, brakes seemed fine, steering, all the gears shifted and felt fine. It was tough to tell if it was coming from a specific side of the car. It definitely has to do with one of the wheels in some capacity though since I could hear it get louder at faster speeds, and intermittently got louder with each wheel revolution. Gonna call and head over to the dealership tomorrow to get to the bottom of it. Would a wheel bearing be covered under warranty?

Sub'd sorry brother. Could it be your scraper/feeler on your pads wearing out?

And sorry to hear about having to tow her, but it does sound like it is going to be covered, unless it is the breaks. |
At the dealership now!

Ok so they pulled it into their garage, no noise. Had an oil change done since I needed that anyways. They took it for a test drive, no noise. Then I drove it with them, no noise. They said it was probably a rock stuck between the brake caliper and pad. It kinda makes sense since the car drives completely fine, breaks and everything works fine. Going back in a little bit to pick it up. Is it possible a rock dislodged and is now inbetween that shield that goes around the inner side of the brake pad? They didn't take the wheels off initially but I was thinking maybe I should have them check just to be sure.
|
Also it didn't make the noise when it was backed off the flatbed last night so maybe just reversing the car freed it? And they said they've seen that before with rocks getting stuck in the breaks on cars with bigger break calipers like the z and Gs too
|
Wow, well ask them if you could take a look at it on the lift otherwise I'm sure whatever it was is probably gone
|
Possible, I'd take the wheels off to make sure
Edit: yep, do this: Quote:

My front pads were down to 2.0 MM at 26,000 miles. I do mostly hiway driving. This is with the Sports/Touring version. I plan on having them replaced on my next oil change.

SO... Had them take off the front left wheel where the sound was coming from, I looked at it with them, couldn't find anything stuck or anything like that. Looked at the other 3 brakes, couldn't see or hear anything rattling. Just got home, (don't know why I didn't think to check this at the dealership) checked the outside of the brake pad and saw a very small groove where the pebble must have been stuck. It's not a deep groove at all, can barely feel it with my finger, but definitely something il keep an eye on. It's maybe a millimeter wide at the most going all the way around the pad, and like I said can barely feel it with my finger so I'm not too worried. In any event I feel much better now.

Just curious: If there is no valid warranty claim made, will they charge you for the tow and their time? Incidentally, I'm insured with Nationwide and they provide tow coverage, at no charge, as part of the expense of my premium. If your insurance covers the tow, maybe you can get that out of the dealership direct bill to you (assuming they're not covering as a warranty matter).

Smart business by that dealership. Just earned your loyalty and trust. Now I know where you'll by that GT-R!

My friend this literally JUST happened to me the other day. Turned into my driveway and the worst metal screeching started from the front left wheel. Did some inspection and full left and right turns and it somehow stopped. I think it was a rock as well. Took it on a hard test drive, doing some slalom and heavy braking maneuvers and all seems well. No problem since. My heart almost stopped that day! Glad your car is ok!

For a tow story, the OP has, one of the best endings ever.

Yeah.
Hear horrible sound from rear end? Pull over have car towed for oil change. Problem gone. I say win.!!!!! |
I had a rock stuck between my brake caliper twice. That screeching sound was loud and horrifying. I drove forward and reverse a few times in a parking lot and eventually the rock came out. Good to hear that your problem is fixed, though.
